SAN DIEGO
As the end of the year soon approaches
and our tans begin to fade, lets take
a moment to think back on the
wonderful adventures that Ur It has
experienced during 2015! Whether it
was in our own backyard or across the
country, we have truly accomplished it
all and started expanding in ways that
we always thought to be possible. This
has been a year of exploration and soul
searching for our Ur It models and staff.
One of our favorite trips and most
likely yours was our spontaneous west
coast adventure to the ‘Golden State’,
California with San Diego being our
first stop! Whether it was the connections
that we made, laughs that we
shared, or fashion trends we explored,
this trip was just the first of many
stops for Ur It Magazine. Our models
explored the streets of San Diego,
California and truly soaked in the
west coast vibes. No specific backdrop
was needed; every corner turned was
a new and beautiful scenic moment
to be captured. From the white sand
beaches, to the crisp ocean blue waves,
all the way on land to the magnificent
California mansions, Ur It’s amazing
photographers were able to capture all
the essence that California living has
to offer!
Not only were we able to capture these
moments for our Ur It readers but we
also were fortunate enough to be able
to indulge in some of the small things
while roaming the city. One of these
many things being the opportunity
to wake up to the crisp ocean air and
start our day within walking distance
of one of the most scenic views in
the world. To wake up on an island
and stroll through the small town of
Corando, California to a local coffee
shop that lines the streets along with
its many high-end boutiques, was a
dream come true. Our San Diego trip
not only allowed us to expand and
share Ur It with the West coast but it
opened our minds to new possibilities.
This trip was one of our big ‘WOW’
moments coming to the realization that
Ur It isn’t meant to be a ‘small town’
magazine just for Central, PA. Ur It
Magazine is a force to be reckoned
with, and we’ve only just begun our
journey to Ur It Nation!
A LOOK BACK AT AN AMAZING YEAR - SAN DIEGO
Q
I followed this when I voted for a friend in a contest. Since
I’m here and your posts are always on my page and you’re
a woman’s magazine, why are women so crazy? Seriously, they
are happy one minute mean the next, nothings good enough, you
don’t listen, and then when you ask while listening, it’s none of
your business. What do you women want?
A
Dear Clueless,
I’m assuming that since you took the time to submit this question,
you are writing not to be an asshole, but because you have a sincere
interest in understanding women. While I do not presume to speak
for all women, the way you are (hopefully) not speaking for all men,
I offer the following guidance:
First, I would suggest you stop going around calling women crazy.
Calling someone, or a group of people, a derogatory term, is
a conversation stopper, not a conversation starter. If you truly
want to engage with women, coming from a place of interest, not
judgement, is always helpful. And, on a PC note, mental illness is a
serious issue, which millions of people (men and women) struggle
with, so throwing around the “crazy” word just isn’t cool.
Another possible issue is the women you are dealing with. Just as
another reader (see “Jerk-Magnet”) misplaced her “jerk-filter”, and
has let a lot of sub-par men into her life, perhaps you have misplaced
your “crazy-filter”, and are letting some mentally unhealthy
women into your life. I will agree with you on one point - you should
not be expected to be a mind-reader. Open communication is the
key to any healthy relationship, game-playing is the road to disaster.
That being said, women often get frustrated when we feel like we
have to tell men EVERYTHING. For example, if it’s my birthday, I
shouldn’t have to tell you to get me flowers, you should know me
well enough to know that is something I like and would appreciate.
Constantly having to give direction to a partner is annoying and
exhausting. A little bit of attentiveness goes a long way.
If you consistently find yourself in these situations, an open,
honest conversation with your partner is the easiest way to get
back on track. In a compassionate, non-judgmental tone, ask her,
“How can we communicate better so we do not get so frustrated
with each other? What are some things you need from me that
you feel like you’re not getting?” And follow-up by expressing what
your needs are - for a relationship to work, it has to work for both
people. It is also important that you both listen to each other’s
feelings without getting defensive. When you are having a conversation
and preparing in your head your defense against what the
other person is saying, you are not listening, you are engaging in
relationship warfare, and completely missing the point of having
the conversation in the first place.
And finally, I highly recommend the book, “Mars and Venus on a
Date” by John Gray. It’s an oldie, but goodie on how women and
men work. I believe it is co-authored with his wife, so a perspective
from each gender is represented.
Good luck on your quest in finding a satisfying relationship!
Q&A WITH CHRISTY FROM BECK PSYCHOTHERAPY 5
During our time traveling up the West
Coast, we experienced the authenticity that
the California lifestyle had to offer and took
that opportunity to indulge in fine-dining
cuisine, top-trend fashion, and unforgettable
views.
We also stumbled upon one of the most
sought-after destinations in the world, where
dreams come true and drama is a must…
that’s right, UR IT Magazine made a special
visit to the Hollywood hills. From day one,
our models began living by the popular
saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans
do,” but with our own little twist—“When
in Hollywood, act like a star,” which is EX-
ACTLY how they acted!
Walking the streets of Hollywood is very similar
to walking the streets of New York. It’s all
about how you dress and the confidence you
wear. Needless to say, we rocked it. Whether
it was on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,
scaling roof tops for private photo shoots, or
hiking to the Hollywood sign, UR IT Magazine
conquered all the iconic landmarks. Our
models stormed the city showing Hollywood
just what being IT is really about!
For many actresses and models around the
world making it big means making it to
Hollywood and on screen. The city itself
is known for taking an average person and
making them into a star. When arriving to
the city of dreamers, we too felt the feeling of
belonging. It’s as if this place was where we
were always meant to end up, where being IT
is all about how you present yourself.
Just roaming down Hollywood Boulevard,
you have a million opportunities at your
fingertips and all you have to do is reach for
them. Hollywood was similar to a red carpet
premiere for UR IT Magazine and we were
sure to harness each and every opportunity
that presented itself. As seen in our September
issue, the Hills feature many expensive
homes and celebrity inhabitants. Our models
and staff walked among the best of the best.
The overwhelming support that we experienced
when in LA was amazing. We made
connections with models from all over and
even reconnected with one very special UR
IT model who had moved to LA to pursue
her dreams (September issue cover). We
learned from her the secrets of the fast-paced
LA lifestyle and that Hollywood is a town
built on both beauty and connections. Fortunately
for us, UR IT Magazine has both!
Our West Coast adventure was exhilarating
and eye opening. The doors just continue to
open for us since expanding! We now have
connections nationwide, which keep growing
and forming into more. The sky is the limit
for UR IT Magazine.
Maybe one day soon, you will see UR IT on
the Hollywood walk of fame. Keep following
UR IT Magazine to see where we will be
showing up next. Don’t forget to shine bright
and show the world U R IT!
A LOOK BACK AT AN AMAZING YEAR - HOLLYWOOD
BEING A CORPORATE WOMAN
IN THE MODERN WORLD
The role of women in the society has changed
over the years, shifting from cooking and
raising children to being equal partners in a
relationship, investors and business leaders.
The modern-day woman is free, stronger and
financially stable compared to her predecessors.
However, does she really feel as empowered
in the corporate world? Yes, she works as
hard in the office but is she realizing her full
potential?
A recent report by Bain & Company shockingly
revealed that just after two years in
the workplace, a woman’s career ambitions
and confidence are lowered. A new female
employee will feel very inspired to reach
top management but after two years, these
aspirations drastically drop. The opposite
happens to men and one is left wondering
what exactly is ailing the 2015 corporate
woman.
FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE
TO THE LOSS OF AMBITION
According to the study, three key factors
significantly contribute to a corporate woman’s
downfall. Not meeting the stereotypes
of an ‘ideal’ worker, lack of role models and
lack of enough support from supervisors and
management as a whole.
Lack of mentors and role models at the
workplace denies women the guidance they
need to bolster their confidence in the corporate
world. If not directed as soon as she
gets into the job market, a woman will easily
get discouraged. Fact is, rising through the
ranks requires great resilience, tolerance and
persistence, something that young women
can learn firsthand from successful people.
It was also found out that when women did
not like the kind of people who got promoted,
they lowered their confidence and
expectations. This should never be the case.
WHAT SHOULD THE 2015
CAREER WOMAN DO NOW?
Firstly, successful women should commit
themselves to guiding the younger ones especially
because they understand the journey
better than anyone else. We live in an era
of gender equality where women should be
treated just like the men.
Women, as showed in the study, lost their
ambition when they did not like the person
who got promoted. This is a very wrong
attitude. No matter what, especially in the
business world, women must learn to keep
emotions aside and be happy in every situation.
Speaking on the Steve Harvey show,
Bishop T.D Jakes gave 5 important tips on
happiness. Although a general advice, this
would work well when applied by a corporate
woman. It is crucial to own your own
happiness regardless of what is happening in
your surroundings. So what a colleague you
dislike got promoted? You should strive to
stay happy and motivated. Secondly, do not
despise yourself. Just because you did not get
the chance does not mean you are not good
enough. Thirdly, enjoy the journey to the
apex of the corporate pyramid because only
then will you fully appreciate your achievements.
The relationships you make at work
should work for you. Take it upon yourself
to learn more and get better.
A different report, Pew Research Centre
study, proved that the even though Americans
believe that women are great entrepreneurs,
women still have to do more than
men to prove their skills and worth. While
this is discouraging to you, remember to stay
happy and keep your eyes on the bull’s eye.
No one ever said the journey would be an
easy one anyway.
BEING A CORPORATE WOMAN IN THE MODERN WORLD
KENYAN WRITER
BRINGS PASSION
TO UR IT
The UR IT staff early in 2015 warmly
welcomed a writer from eastern Kenya and
she has been contributing fresh and exciting
articles to the magazine non-stop.
Readers may have read some of her articles
and noticed her name by now. Vivian
Achieng, 23, said writing is “just a hobby
that I extremely love.”
She discovered online through Problogger
that UR IT was recruiting writers, so she
visited uritmag.com to find out more.
“I immediately fell in love with its vision of
addressing women’s health, social and fitness
issues,” she said. “Its style was refreshing,
causing me to develop a keen interest in
writing for UR IT.”
Vivian was worried that maybe she would
not have the opportunity since she is from
Kenya. But, a few days later, her application
was accepted and UR IT’s founder was
thrilled to bring a writer from outside of the
U.S. to the UR IT crew!
“The magazine was willing to have me write
for its audience although I was continents
away. Now, months later, I still feel thrilled
and above all, grateful for the opportunity,”
said Vivian. She appreciates that UR IT cares
about the quality of content released to its
audience and said that keeps her working
harder each time she sits to write.
“At UR IT, I have met an
amazing team that is
understanding, innovative,
and simply put—cool.”
With six years of online writing experience,
Vivian is used to writing for audiences in
the United States and the United Kingdom.
However, she said it can be challenging as she
worries her work could be discredited because
of her location.
Overall, the journey has been positive and
rewarding and Vivian takes great pride in her
successful work.
“I use this chance to inform the whole world
that we share a majority of the problems we
face, and women in the U.S. will no longer
feel alone when they realize that women in
other parts of the world face the exact same
problems they face,” said Vivian.
“When I’m not writing, I write,” joked
Vivian, who is also a trained conservation
biologist from Kenyatta University. Besides
a passion for writing, Vivian has also through
her career found a passion in caring for the
environment, maintaining biodiversity, and
making a difference in communities.
Vivian shared that Kenya is full of life,
thrilling wildlife safaris, breath-taking
sandy beaches, 42 different cultures and
unbelievable food. She encourages UR IT
readers to visit Kenya to see the wonderful
sights and she thanks the readers, too, for
helping to push her to share quality material
in UR IT Magazine.
“At UR IT, I have met an amazing team that
is understanding, innovative, and simply
put—cool,” said Vivian. “I like that each
issue is inspirational and empowering and I
believe the magazine has impacted the lives
of many women.”
Living a Dream,
ONE SONG AT A TIME
Music has always been a part of
UR IT model Annie Morgan’s life,
but she didn’t expect overnight
success for a song she wrote and
recently recorded with her iPhone.
“It was like any other Monday for
me. I wrote a song called ‘If You
Could See Me Fly’ and uploaded
it to Facebook. Nothing unusual,”
said Annie, a self-proclaimed
country girl from Mahaffey,
Pennsylvania.
She shared her video with a few
friends and went to bed, thinking
nothing of it since she has been
writing and playing music since
she was nine years old.
“I’m no stranger to music,” said
Annie, whose parents both play piano and
are her biggest supporters. “I was homeschooled
and had plenty of time to sit at my
old upright piano and practice.”
That practice has made all the difference
and Annie awoke that Tuesday morning in
September to find her video had over 40,000
views.
“My life changed forever,” she said. “Since
then, it has been reaching people all over
the world. I started receiving messages from
people in Kenya, Ireland, Scotland, Australia,
Canada, Nova Scotia, and England just
to name a few. “They all were sending me
pictures of their loved ones who had gone
on to heaven and were sharing their personal
stories with me about how my song has in
some way touched their life.”
Her country-style song is about the loss of a
child. It is sung as the voice of a little child
in Heaven talking to their mom who still
remains on Earth.
Within two weeks, Annie received thousands
of messages and even more comments on her
new song than she ever imagined she would.
The video, at the time, had over 4.5 million
views on Facebook alone. Within one week,
Annie’s Facebook page dedicated to her music
gained 16,000 “likes.”
“My YouTube channel is blowing up and
I’ve been receiving too many notifications to
count from people subscribing to me so they
can hear more of my music,” said Annie.
“I’ve had success with other original songs
that I’ve posted on Facebook as well, but
nothing quite like this.”
Every day, Annie is becoming more and
more surprised at the success of “If You
Could See Me Fly.”
“I really believe my song is touching so many
people because it talks about something almost
everyone has at some point had to deal
with: Loss,” shared Annie, who has always
wanted to touch lives. “It’s giving millions of
people comfort and hope.”
Now is her golden opportunity to touch
lives, she said, and she is seizing it!
The success of the song early on resulted in
an interview with WTAJ News, a station
in central Pennsylvania that
caught up with Annie during
UR IT Magazine’s fall fashion
show in Altoona, Pennsylvania in
September. The station aired her
interview and a segment of the
song, which was a very exciting
opportunity for Annie.
“I’ve made the front page of
different newspapers around the
area and TV!” she exclaimed,
wondering what could come
next. “I’m so blessed that I can do
something with my music to be
proud of and show the world that
if you keep pushing forward, you
can make it!”
Besides her singing success, Annie
has also been a model since
she was young. Being a part of UR IT over
the past two years has given her “the chance
to feel beautiful and confident again” after
she birthed her daughter, Abigail, who will
turn two in June. She said working with the
UR IT staff is inspirational and a joy.
“Thanks to their support and encouragement,
they’ve given me back my desire to
be in front of the camera again and not be
afraid of what people might think,” Annie
said. “You are who you are and no one
should every be ashamed of that.”
She leaves others with this advice: “It took
me 16 years to finally get my big break and
if I would’ve given up, I’d never be where I
am today. My best advice is, don’t give up
on your dreams no matter how big they are.
Nothing is impossible!”
Check out Annie’s song, “If You Could
See Me Fly” at concert schedule at www.
anniemorganmusic.com. The song is also
now available on iTunes and will be available
on Spotify, Amazon Music, Target Music
and Google Play. “Annie Morgan” is also on
Facebook and YouTube.
