Academic Project<br />

<strong>CUT</strong> embraced its status as a University of Technology and as such we are a regional university<br />

where all science, engineering and technology research programmes are directed at the development<br />

of the region and to solve the problems of the region. There are more than 50 programmes for<br />

students to choose from at <strong>CUT</strong>.<br />

Academic Development and Support<br />

The role of Academic De vel op ment<br />

and Support (ADS) is to support<br />

academic staff and stu dents by<br />

enhancing student-centred teach ing<br />

and learning ap proaches, pro viding<br />

need-directed academic staff de vel opment<br />

initiatives, leader ship in stu dent<br />

academic de vel op ment practices,<br />

initia tion of in no va tive curriculum devel<br />

op ment pro cesses, imple mentation<br />

of edu cational tech nology strategies,<br />

as well as co-ordination of Work-<br />

Integrated Learning (WIL).<br />

During <strong>2009</strong>, ADS achieved<br />

the following strategic<br />

objectives:<br />

• Benchmarking academic development practices with<br />

other higher education institutions;<br />

• Enrolling academic staff members for formal qualifications<br />

to update their teaching and learning practices;<br />

• Managing the implementation of the Academic Literacy<br />

Programme for first-year students;<br />

• Establishing institutional curriculum development<br />

committees to address the Higher Education Qualification<br />

Framework (HEQF);<br />

• Managing the administrative and academic support<br />

services at the Kimberley Regional Learning Centre;<br />

• Implementing quality assurance practices; and coordinating<br />

WIL.<br />

The Academic Language Proficiency (ALP) course commenced<br />

at the beginning of the second quarter of <strong>2009</strong> on<br />

the Bloemfontein, Welkom and Kimberley campuses. The<br />

aim of the course is to help students develop their reading<br />

and writing ability in English to a level that will give them<br />

a fair chance of succeeding in their respective studies at<br />

the University.<br />

The ALP enrolment figures and pass rate per campus in <strong>2009</strong>.<br />

Extended Curriculum programmes were offered in the following<br />

fields; Art and Design, Health Sciences, In for mation<br />

Tech no logy and Engi neering. An amount of R2.289 mil lion<br />

was received from the Department of Higher Edu cation and<br />

Training (DHET) to be used in the provision of Ex tended<br />

Curriculum programmes for the <strong>2009</strong> financial year.<br />

The Centre for e-Learning and Educational Technology<br />

hosted the Blackboard Community Conference at <strong>CUT</strong>,<br />

which was attended by a total of 140 delegates from across<br />
