SWIM PROGRAMS Swim With Me Programs (Ages 6 mos.-4 yrs.) These classes allow parents to participate with their children for an introduction to water exploration and water safety. One adult per child in each class is required. (KM) Water Babies (Ages 6-18 mos.): Each child is exposed to the pool to experience supported movement and to learn basic water skills. Water Tots (Ages 18-30 mos.): Children learn coordinated arm and leg movements with the use of water noodles and other instructional equipment. Life jacket use for toddlers will be reviewed. Water Tikes (Ages 2.5-4 yrs.): This class begins with both the parent and child in the water and as the child begins to gain confidence, the parent is slowly weaned from participation. Little Swimmers (Ages 3-6 yrs.) Children learn primary swimming, coordinated water movements and age-appropriate safety skills. Approximate 5:1 student/instructor ratio will be used. (KM) Level 1: The fundamentals of swimming including water independence, coordinated arm and leg movements and proper body position are the focus of this level. Level 2: Floating with minimal support, kicking with stroke bars as well as coordinated arm and leg movements are the focus of this level. Level 3: Swimming on the front and back for increased distances with coordinated breathing is a primary requirement for Level 3. Completion of this level will qualify your swimmer for Learn to Swim Level 2. If your child does not complete this level and is at least five years old, you may transfer him/her into Learn to Swim Level 1. Learn to Swim Levels 1-7 (Ages 5-15 yrs.) Discover your child(ren)'s love for swimming while they advance their swimming skills, learn breath control, stroke drills and age-appropriate safety skills. Basic swimming strokes (competitive and resting) will be emphasized to develop proficiency, stamina and skill in each level. Approximate 7:1 student/instructor ratio. (KM) Level 1: Learning independence, coordinated arm and leg movements and proper body position are the main focus of Level 1. Floating with minimal assistance as well as kicking with stroke bars are practiced. Level 2: Arm and leg movements will become more defined in this level as coordinated breathing is introduced. Swimming on the back and basic water survival skills will also be highlighted. Level 3: Increasing strength and endurance is the primary focus at this level as the participants are prepared to swim lengths of the pool. Elementary backstroke is introduced. DID YOU KNOW? To begin Learn to Swim Level 4, the participant must be able to swim the length of the pool unsupported with proper technique for the 45 minute class. Level 4: Swimming distance will be increased significantly in this level as proper turns are taught and swimming and diving skills are further refined. Breaststroke is introduced. Level 5: Swimming distances of 100 yards becomes a requirement in this level as endurance and technique are further developed. Butterfly is introduced. Level 6: Reinforcement of previously learned skills is emphasized as swimming endurance and technique are further challenged. Front crawl flip turns, sidestroke and advanced safety skills are introduced in this level. Level 7: Fine tuning of stroke techniques and endurance is emphasized. Basic competitive swimming concepts will be introduced to begin preparation for our Swim and Stroke Clinic. Private Swim Lessons Looking for private swim lessons, but none of our classes work with your schedule or are full? We now offer Private Swim Lessons where you can select your favorite instructor at a time that works for you, and pay as you go! We guarantee you will love this option if you or your family are always on the go! SWIM PROGRAMS Swim Instructor Internship (Ages 12-14 yrs.) Are you looking to become a swim instructor one day? Want to work for Gurnee Park District? Start your career in our Swim Instructor Internship program. Interns receive supervised, hands-on experience while assisting our staff with swim lessons. (KM) Junior Lifeguard (Ages 12-15 yrs.) This water safety training includes basic rescue techniques, CPR and first-aid skills. Participants improve their physical condition, acquire customer service skills and apprentice with current lifeguards. Passing participants receive a certification as a junior lifeguard. Those 15 years old, may apply to be a lifeguard with the Gurnee Park District. This hotline will be updated by 7:15a daily or when inclement weather becomes apparent. You can also visit: GurneeParkDistrict.com/aquatics-programs/swim-lessons-status. When considering class cancellations for outdoor programs, staff consider many factors such as temperature, precipitation, the amount of sun, wind and forecasts. In the event of a cancellation, plan to attend the make-up that is built into the program. If your class meets once per week, we will extend the class by additional weeks to make it up. If your class takes place Monday-Thursday, we will have two make-up days designated on Thursday and Friday of the second week. Please consider the make-up days as part of the class when registering. If you are unable to attend the make-up class, a refund will not be issued.
