Gurnee Park District, a municipal governing agency, provides parks,
recreational facilities and programs for its residents. The Board of Commissioners
is made up of five elected officials, each serving four-year terms. Board
meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00p at Viking Park,
4374 Old Grand Avenue, and are open to the public.

Have you met…Steve Becker, Parks Team Grounds Operator Supervisor?
We are so grateful to have Steve
Becker, a nature enthusiast, adventure
seeking and longtime employee of
Gurnee Park District (GPD), part of
our team. He has been with GPD
for almost 20 years! He first joined
the Gurnee Park District family when
he attended our Growing Tree
Preschool program. Becker first realized that he was
interested in trees and their diversity while at his first
job at a landscape nursery. Luckily for us, Steve found
a job opening with the Park District from the local
newspaper.
Steve was raised in Gurnee, but does not limit his travels
to the 60031 area. His most memorable vacation was a
trip to Antarctica. He kayaked, saw humpback whales
and even camped out on the ice next to penguins!
(Don’t worry, Steve won’t be planning Gurnee Park
District’s next Family Camp Out anytime soon.)
Not only does Steve spend time traveling outdoors, but
his work as Gurnee Park District’s Grounds Operator
Supervisor keeps him busy outside. During the summer,
you can find him at any one of our various parks. While
he is there, he is looking for areas of improvement,
managing projects and cleaning up the parks. “If you
see the Parks Department in any of our parks, feel free
to ask them questions or provide
them with any comments,” Steve
stated.
Did you know we have 27 parks
and over 400 acres of green,
open space? Steve’s favorite park
location is University Park. “It is laid
out perfectly with the right amount
of natural area and a playground.
There is even a stream that flows
through it,” he explained.
