8- and 9-year-olds within
the programme is the RFL’s
Primary Rugby League
format. This is a modified
touch game that allows
children with a range of
abilities to handle the ball
more often and compete on
an equal footing.
With each team playing six
games during the festival,
players were able to develop
throughout the day. At
the end, individuals were
recognised across the teams
as exhibiting a range of
attributes such as teamwork,
honesty, self-belief and
determination with special
awards being given out for
those players who competed
in the right manner during
the tournament.
The event was the
conclusion of a schools’
Rugby League Programme
that has seen the game
played by over a thousand
children and young people
from across the county.
Starting in December
with the RFL’s flagship
competition, Champion
Schools, the All Golds
have worked with over
40 Gloucestershire
schools alongside talent
development programmes
and other community-based
coaching.
The programme has
also delivered coach
development programmes
to 35 teachers across the
primary and secondary
sector and engaged with a
range of new schools in this
academic year.
Speaking at the event, Dan
Garbutt who manages the
community programme was
keen to praise his staff in
saying: “We’re lucky to have
an excellent and committed
group of young community
coaches, all students at the
university, that make this
happen.
“Without their tireless work
and ongoing commitment
to improving, we wouldn’t
have had the success we’ve
had and the regional and
national recognition that the
programme receives.”
The All Golds community
programme will be
continuing into the summer
with community club
coaching and the schools
programme will restart in
September.
With an ever-growing
programme, the community
department will be planning
to expand the number of
schools and areas involved
in 2016/17, following a
successful first foray into the
Forest of Dean this year.
