In this edition, we’ve got
some great coverage of the
latest action in Kingstone
Press League 1, reviews of
our emerging reserves side
and some fascinating insights
into the challenging world
of professional sport from
Tom Ford, Cheltenham’s own
squash sensation, as well as
news of the University’s latest
sporting venture.
While we inevitably focus
on the action on the pitch,
especially those of us who
find the time to get down to
the Prince of Wales stadium
this Sunday, this week has
made many of us think about
how tough it can be to run
a professional sports team
behind the scenes.
We are exceptionally fortunate
at the All Golds to have a
superb group of people who
work crazy hours in order to
bring professional rugby to
our region. The rewards
from this can seem a
long way away if your
team is struggling, but
we have some amazing
people who are totally
committed to their
sport and to the All
Golds.
Step forward Trevor
Moss, Pat Evans,
Patrick Baines, Chris Wilson,
Martin Lovegrove and Dave
Friend – you all do a fantastic
job and we are incredibly
grateful for what you do.
However, at least at the All
Golds we can look forward
to next season with some
certainty and growing
confidence. This is quite
clearly not the case at York
City Knights, and it was a
shock to read the statements
last week that told of the
strained relations between
this historic club and the other
stakeholders in the city. The
Knights are effectively being
wound up, and the players are
being encouraged to find new
clubs.
Although there appear to be
some saviours on the horizon,
keen to maintain the sport in
the city, it seems clear that the
club in its current form will not
continue.
For everyone’s sake – the
players, officials, staff, sponsors
and particularly the volunteers
who put in so many hours – we
hope their situation is resolved
soon.
Back to the action on the
pitch and the All Golds only
have three home games left,
including this weekend’s clash
with long-time rivals Oxford.
We finish our season with a
tasty derby against South
Wales Scorpions, and are
hoping to enjoy an entertaining
end to the season.
We’re encouraging you to
bring a friend to that final
game to celebrate another
rollercoaster year, and are
delighted to announce that if
you buy your ticket in advance,
you can secure a second ticket
for half price. Please do your
bit to give our boys a decent
send off in the last match, and
get yourself and a friend down
to the Prince of Wales for our
final game.
