The new state of the art centre, which is part of Newcastle-under-Lyme College, features various glazing solutions from Senior that have been installed by Aire Valley Architectural Ltd for main contractor Bardsley Construction. The slim sightlines and aesthetic flexibility of Senior’s SMR800 curtain walling made it the ideal choice to create the modern entrance to the building and the system has been used throughout to maximise the flow of natural light into the dance studios and communal areas. The centre’s bright and spacious design has been further complemented by Senior’s SPW600/E windows and the use of Senior’s SD automatic doors. The exceptional thermal efficiency of Senior’s SMR800 curtain walling and SPW600/E windows also met with the scheme’s stringent sustainability targets which has led to the centre achieving a BREEAM rating of ‘excellent’. www.seniorarchitectural.co.uk Project delays continue to worsen According to the latest construction industry data, 60% of projects were delivered to clients late in the past year, with just 69% of overall projects delivered on cost or better. This is in sharp contrast to figures just released by the Portakabin Group, which has now completed 99.7% of projects on time and on budget every year since 2003. The UK Industry Performance Report is compiled by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, Constructing Excellence, Glenigan, and the CITB. The research uses key performance indicators to allow construction companies to benchmark their performance against the rest of the industry. “Off-site construction is highly predictable, which helps construction clients reduce risk with far greater assurance of completion on time and on budget – often to extremely challenging deadlines and on complex, fully operational sites,” explained Simon Ambler, Director of the Portakabin Group. www.portakabin-group.co.uk that using Knauf’s simple but ingenious Linear fixing system to install Cleaneo Akustik perforated plasterboard in the new school hall shaved around 15% from this element of the construction schedule. “The specification pack from Knauf really simplified matters, not only in terms of making sure that the design met the acoustic criteria but also in reducing the number types of boards required to meet the various requirements,” said project lead, Simon Alford from Hampshire County Council property services. The same board was used throughout for the walls and partitions, and Cleaneo Akustik for the ceilings, to achieve the robust finish and to meet the acoustic standards set out in Building Bulletin 93. www.knauf.co.uk 46 A much-needed youth centre in Romsey Foremans Relocatable Building Systems has started work on a contract worth in the region of £500,000 to construct a muchneeded Youth Centre in the Hampshire market town of Romsey. Designed by Hampshire County Council’s Property Services team and built by Foremans, the centre will be all on one level, making it fully accessible, and will offer facilities for wider community use. Foremans is constructing the building from recycled steel modules fitted out with all-new fixtures and fittings – a faster and highly sustainable alternative to site-based construction methods but with no compromise on quality. This innovative approach will reduce work on site to just 10 weeks so the new facilities will be up and running for use by the local community at a much earlier stage – and with a lower carbon footprint.
