Cardiovascular risk factors, diabetes, sexual and reproductive health, child health issues are all health<br />

issues impacting on the wellness of Pacific women. A panel will discuss these issues and how<br />

women’s church committees can support the health of women in their congregations.<br />

Topic: Nutrition<br />

Presenter: Auckland Regional Public Health<br />

This workshop will introduce some of the basic principles of healthier food and nutrition practices for<br />

Pacific families and communities. This workshop is designed to empower and raise the knowledge of<br />

delegates about issues such as food groups, serving sizes and the fat, sugar and salt content of foods.<br />

Topic: Smoking<br />

Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in New Zealand. It has a significant<br />

impact on Pacific peoples’ health. Raising the awareness of smokefree environments such as<br />

churches, and the impact of smoking on Pacific peoples health and family life will be discussed<br />

during this workshop. Evidence shows that parents who smoke are more likely to have children that<br />

will smoke. This workshop will look at how as a community we can set a good example for the next<br />

generation.<br />

Presenter: CMDHB – Lets Beat Diabetes Team<br />

Sixty percent of Pacific children and eighty percent of Pacific adults are either overweight or obese.<br />

Obesity is a major risk factor for many diseases such as type-two diabetes, carido-vascular disease,<br />

gout, gallstones and some cancers. The Lets Beat Diabetes team will run an interactive workshop<br />

that will look the issue of 'weight' and how to assess your health status.<br />

Topic: Physical Activity<br />

Physical activity is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. This workshop will look at how<br />

Pacific peoples can incorporate physical activity into everyday life. The workshop will also look at<br />

some ideas for delegates to take back to their churches around promoting physical activity in church<br />

settings. Health Pacifica Doctors will also present on their LotuMoui Exercise programme that will be<br />

made available to all LotuMoui churches in 2007.
