18 Women’s Health Facilitator: Fepulea’i Margie Apa Presenters: Dr Ate Moala, Anne Allan-Moetaua, Reverend Setaita Veikune, Esther Cowley-Malcolm Room: Genesis Theatre Cardiovascular risk factors, diabetes, sexual and reproductive health, child health issues are all health issues impacting on the wellness of Pacific women. A panel will discuss these issues and how women’s church committees can support the health of women in their congregations. Breakout Session Three: Healthy Lifestyle Workshops Thursday 23rd November, 10.30 am – 12.00 pm Participants will have an opportunity to be part of workshop sessions which focus on: Topic: Nutrition Presenter: Auckland Regional Public Health Facilitator: Anne Fitisemanu Room: Sir Woolf Fisher Arena This workshop will introduce some of the basic principles of healthier food and nutrition practices for Pacific families and communities. This workshop is designed to empower and raise the knowledge of delegates about issues such as food groups, serving sizes and the fat, sugar and salt content of foods. Topic: Smoking Presenter: Josephine Samuelu Facilitator: Elizabeth Powell Room: Carter Holt Harvey Room Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in New Zealand. It has a significant impact on Pacific peoples’ health. Raising the awareness of smokefree environments such as churches, and the impact of smoking on Pacific peoples health and family life will be discussed during this workshop. Evidence shows that parents who smoke are more likely to have children that will smoke. This workshop will look at how as a community we can set a good example for the next generation. Topic: Healthier Weight Presenter: CMDHB – Lets Beat Diabetes Team Facilitator: LBD Team member Room: Marquee 2 Sixty percent of Pacific children and eighty percent of Pacific adults are either overweight or obese. Obesity is a major risk factor for many diseases such as type-two diabetes, carido-vascular disease, gout, gallstones and some cancers. The Lets Beat Diabetes team will run an interactive workshop that will look the issue of 'weight' and how to assess your health status. Topic: Physical Activity Presenter: Charmaine Baker, Health Pacifica Doctors Aerobics Team Facilitator: Lani Stowers Room: AIAL Foyer Physical activity is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. This workshop will look at how Pacific peoples can incorporate physical activity into everyday life. The workshop will also look at some ideas for delegates to take back to their churches around promoting physical activity in church settings. Health Pacifica Doctors will also present on their LotuMoui Exercise programme that will be made available to all LotuMoui churches in 2007.
Youth Workshops: For delegates aged 13 years – 24 years Young people will have the opportunity to represent their churches in a youth stream which will run parallel to the main Symposium proceedings. They will discuss and debate lifestyle issues for Pacific young people in South Auckland and feedback their solutions to the wider delegation. Youth Breakout Session One: Gender Specific Session Wednesday 22nd November, 1.00 pm – 2.30 pm This session will allow young Pacific people to discuss key lifestyle issues within their gender groups. Topics for discussion will include: role modelling, self esteem, peer pressure, body composition and family. Healthy Lifestyles for Pacific ‘Gurls’ Presenter: Yvonne Kainuku Walsh Facilitator: Rachel Enosa-Saseve Room: Panasonic Room Healthy Lifestyles for Pacific Guys Presenter: Glenn Compain and Dietrich Soakai Facilitator: Efeso Collins Room: Marquee 1 Youth Breakout Session Two: Identity Workshops Wednesday 22nd November, 3.30 pm – 4.45 pm Identity has been acknowledged as an important issue for Pacific youth with it being closely linked to connectedness with family, culture and church. This session will explore some of the key identity issues across the different age groups and what some of the solutions may be to maintain a strong and positive sense of identity for Pacific young people. Key Questions for discussion will include: • What does identity mean to you? • What do you identify with as a young Pacific person in South Auckland? • How can your families and churches support you to have a strong and positive sense of identity as a Pacific young person?
