Ramsey Google Summit Eduscape Learning invites educators, administrators and IT professionals to register for the two-day Ramsey Google Summit being held July 13-14 at Ramsey High School. The summit will equip educators to use Google for Education in the classroom and district. Sessions are aligned to state standards, as well as best practices in the classroom. You will learn to build your own YouTube channel, navigate the Google Admin Console, and send Forms with automatic email responses, among other skills. Grab a quick reality check as you experience Augmented Reality for the classroom with apps from the Google PlayStore. You’ll “drive” away confident and ready to create new possibilities with Google for Education. The fee for the two-day event is $299. Breakfast and lunch are included. SUSSEX TO CAPE MAY More to learn throughout the state Programs at Duke Farms Climate Science and Sustainable Actions: A Summer Teacher Institute at Duke Farms Let the 2,700 acre Duke Farms property serve as your living laboratory and source of inspiration for exciting new lessons when you join a team of experts for an actionpacked weeklong summer institute. Master teachers Laura Gallagher and Missy Holzer will be the lead faculty for the workshop. Participating teachers will conduct hands-on outdoor fieldwork, hear lectures from New Jersey’s top experts and develop Next Generation Science Standards-aligned lesson plans that will bring the concepts of climate change and sustainability to life for students. Ample opportunities will exist for networking and collaboration with other K-12 educators. Teaching and Learning with Monarch Butterflies Each fall, monarch butterflies from the U.S. and Canada begin a 2,000 mile migration to Mexico. The following spring, their great grandchildren return. This is a twoday workshop combining classroom and field experiences where participants are taught by a team of experienced educators that provide participants with the knowledge, skills, materials and confidence to raise monarchs on their own. The workshop enables pre-K through 12th grade educators to teach essential skills in literacy, math, science, geography, technology, Spanish, the arts and social studies through the captivating story of monarchs. Each participant receives hands-on instruction by experienced teachers, rearing cages, books, posters, DVDs and other essential materials. strategies for creating butterfly gardens, activities for any subject area, proven models for engaging community support and on-going support. NGSS professional development workshop series for 2016-17 During the 2016-17 school year, the Science Education Institute at Raritan Valley Community College will offer a series of seven one-day workshops designed to help teachers of grades K-12 and their supervisors prepare for implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Participants will be introduced to a performance sequence that consists of three stages: gathering, reasoning, and communicating. Each workshop will focus on different stages and the science and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts that each emphasizes. Participants will engage in several performance tasks that are similar to the NGSS performance expectations and integrate Science and Engineering Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Disciplinary Core ideas. They will be introduced to a nationally field-tested Lesson Idea Template to begin planning their own NGSS-aligned lessons. The 2016-2017 NGSS Professional Development Workshop Series will include eight workshops: • Asking Questions/Planning and Carrying out Investigations – Wednesday, Sept. 28 • Analyzing and Interpreting Data – Tuesday, Oct. 18. • Engineering Design and Technology – Wednesday, Nov. 16 • Developing and Using Models – Wednesday, Dec. 14 • Crosscutting Concepts – Wednesday, Jan. 25 • Constructing Explanations/Engaging in Argument from Evidence – Wednesday, Feb. 15 • Planning NGSS-Aligned Lessons for Grades K-5 – Wednesday, March 15 • Planning NGSS-Aligned Lessons for Grades 6-12 – Wednesday, March 22 All workshops are held at Raritan Valley Community College in North Branch. Workshops begin promptly at 9 a.m. and end by 3:30 p.m. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided. The fee is $125 per workshop. Register early. Starlab Training on Nov. 30 Starlab is an inflatable dome on which you can project vivid images of the night sky, ancient mythological characters, our solar system and galaxy, Earth’s weather patterns and geological features, or the biological cell. It is easily transportable and fits into a small car. It can be set up in fifteen minutes and accommodates up to 30 students. The Starlab dome does require a clean floor space of 20 x 22 feet and a 12 feet high ceiling. Starlab is the prefect tool to make science come to life for students. It helps teachers prepare for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) by allowing students to make observations, collect and analyze data, and construct explanations for natural phenomena in astronomy, earth science, and biology. Astronomical phenomena such as the daily and yearly motions of the sun, moon, planets, stars, and constellations are easily observed with Starlab. Data from these observations presents students with the evidence to develop models and construct explanations for these phenomena. Starlab also includes projection cylinders related to earth science concepts such as ocean currents, weather and climate, and plate tectonics, and biology concepts such as the cell. The Starlab Training will be held at Raritan Valley Community College in North Branch. At the training, participants will learn how to set up, maintain, and repack the Starlab system. The training will begin promptly at 9 a.m and end by 4 p.m. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided. The fee is $150. Teachers who complete the training are eligible to rent Starlab for $375 per week. Customized Starlab training is also available at your district site. Because the highly individualized nature of the training it can only accommodate up to five teachers.
