Hempfield Area School District Fort Allen Students Show Off Their Talents Fort Allen Elementary School hosted their first ever talent show in May with the theme, “Step Right Up!” In an effort to raise money for the Fort Allen Fighters Relay for Life team. A small entry fee was charged, and a “Summer Fun” basket created by the teachers was raffled off at the end of the evening. Prior to the show, students brought in spare change to reach a goal of $250 set by their teachers. If they reached their goal, the teachers agreed to perform at the end of the show, which is exactly what happened! Some of the featured talents included martial arts exercises, gymnastics, singing, musical instruments, and dance. A number of students also acted as stage crew to assist in setting up for the event. Over $700 was raised for the Relay for Life fight against cancer. Rebecca Ostrosky performs her dance routine A Step Back in Time Elementary School Third Grade Visits CWCTC Cosmetology Students at the Central Westmoreland Career & Technology Center (CWCTC) enrolled in the cosmetology program were afforded the opportunity to work on some real third grade “models” from Stanwood Elementary. The students visited the center and had their hair shampooed and styled. West Point Elementary School's fourth and fifth grade students received a special visit by author and storyteller, Robin Moore. The students were captivated as they watched and used teamwork to assist in erecting a sixteen foot tipi, and then used the dwelling as a storytelling space. In addition, they eagerly participated as part of the storytelling process while Robin made comparisons between the Native American way of life on the Western Plains and life among the Lenape Native Americans of Pennsylvania. It was an enjoyable learning experience for all involved. Rockin’ Readers Shine at West Point Elementary Fourth and fifth grade students at West Point Elementary School were invited to participate in the Rockin’ Reader Club which met every other Friday morning before school. Led by Mrs. Ellen Krueger, the students read classic novels to discuss with their teacher and other club members. The culminating activity was the “Wax Museum” where teams of students dressed up as one of the characters and depicted a scene from their favorite classic to the delight of classmates and parents. Energy Safe Kids Fourth grade students at West Hempfield Elementary participated in a free program called Energy Safe Kids presented through Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania where they learned all about natural gas safety. Citizenship at West Point The fifth grade winners of the coveted Citizenship Award went to Hunter Ronald, John Kissell, and Hunter Cernuska! All of their teachers presented speeches on the wonderful qualities that made these boys the 2015-2016 recipients of West Point’s pride! WHE Students Volunteer Fourth grade students in Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. Hoge’s classes volunteered their time to pack bags to be given to cancer survivors at the annual Relay for Life of Greensburg held at Spartan Stadium in June. 24
Hempfield Area School District Girls’ Softball Team Wins “Triple Crown!” Section Champions--WPIAL Champions--PIAA State Champions! 2016 proved to be their year. They worked hard, played hard, and deserved everything they achieved. This year’s girls’ softball team went undefeated, setting a school record of twenty-five (25) victories. Pitcher Morgan Ryan averaged fourteen strikeouts a game, and with a defense behind her that she could depend on to field the balls that were hit, made for a great team. When you meet the players and talk to them, you know instantly that they are a team, united together. They have each other’s backs and support each other, which contributes to building a winning team. The last time Head Coach, Bob Kalp, coached his team to a state championship was seventeen years ago. The work ethic that he instills in his players, the amount of time he puts into the program, and the way he pushes them to do their very best, is all part of creating a winning team. Congratulations to the girls’ softball team and their coaches, Bob Kalp, Richard Albright, Jenna Keefer, Brittany Fenn, Matt Knizner, Ray Mello, John Sherrow, and Stefanie Wiegand, , on a very deserving run to become the 2016 state champions! We are all so proud of you. HASD Athletic Website Revamped During the 2015-2016 school year, the Hempfield Area School District enjoyed many great individual and team sports performances – and provided a completely redesigned Athletic Department website to highlight and communicate those accomplishments. Now that all information is complete and current, township residents are encouraged to visit http://www.hasdpa.net/athletics. The main page of the website features a slideshow of action photos, quick links to athletic-related websites, a calendar of daily events, and tweets posted by the Hempfield Area Athletic Department (follow us on Twitter @HASDathletics). In addition, the subpages include schedules, rosters, results (for varsity sports only), and a team photo for every team and cheerleading group.
