DISCIPLE’S JOURNEY By Amos Wong (Sherwood MC) What a privilege to be invited to share a little about my journey of studying the bible through the Disciple course. In short, just do it! It has and is still benefitting me in my journey of reading and learning the bible, and indeed I am truly learning so much about God, things I’ve always heard in sermons and never truly understood. Let me start by being honest with you: I started discipleship feeling afraid of the commitment that this course requires. I was never an avid bible reader; my knowledge of the bible was limited to what was preached during the sermons, youth bible studies and conversations with Christian friends. During the time, I was a full-time student studying 8 days a week (no, not really)! I was afraid of the extensive reading we had to do daily. However, it is now no longer a burden in my life; in fact, it has become something that truly encourages me in my Christian walk. Disciple classes were the most rewarding when I did the pre-readings at home and spent time in prayer - that way, I was able to benefit more from the weekly discussions with everyone else. That was the motivating factor - wanting to grow more in the knowledge of the bible. Please allow me to share with you a few things I’ve learnt in the Green (second) discipleship book series - the study of Genesis- Exodus and Luke-Acts. Through the story of Jacob in Genesis 32, I’ve learnt that I am spiritually like Jacob/Israel - a wrestler with God. Before becoming a Christian, I would not have been able to live a life freeing myself from sinning. In other words, I was a slave to sin, as Paul preaches in Romans 6. I would always find it extremely difficult to forgive another person who had done wrong to me, let alone reconcile with that person. Nevertheless, the story of Esau extending grace to Jacob despite the many wrongs that Jacob had done to him really spoke to me. In Matthew 5:21-48 and Luke 6, Jesus teaches reconciliation and extending forgiveness to others. The readings during that week challenged me to forgive others and reconcile with others because of the grace extended to me by God, how God came down in the man of Jesus for my reconciliation with Him. In our readings in Luke, I’ve also learnt so much more of the Holy Spirit. I’ve learned that the ultimate purpose of the Holy Spirit is to sanctify a Christian - to make one holy. I’ve always feared the Holy Spirit because of the lack of understanding of Him. I’ve always had this complaint in my heart, “If only I was one of Jesus’ disciples during the time, if only I could spend time personally with him!” Now that I’ve learnt that God sent his Holy Spirit down for me for the process of sanctification out of love, I have come to embrace this blessing and actively depend on Him more. With the Holy Spirit, I can experience the presence of God 24/7! Isn’t God amazing! I really would like to take this opportunity to challenge you to study the bible through the Disciple course! If you are like me, needing the push and commitment to start off reading the bible regularly, the Disciple course is a good start! As Isaiah 55 says, “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters.” Jesus is the living water; those who drink from Him will never thirst again! (John 4:14) God Bless You. AUSTRALIA WEST DISTRICT CHURCH NEWS GOSPEL METHODIST CHURCH 1. Gospel Family Camp was held from 15 to 17 July at Orchard Glory Farm Resort. 3. Sibu North District Pastor retreat was held in Perth from 29 July to 5 August. There were 21 pastors and their family members, led by DS Rev. 张宗忠 .Six guests attended the Sunday Service at GoMC on 31 July. 8 2. A Revival Meeting was held on Friday 1 July at GoMC. Our speaker was Rev Joel Siew Chiu Huo.
4. Evangelism Explosion Training: District Evangelism Committee are organising an evangelism training course. Classes are held from 11:30am to 1:00pm on alternate Sundays at GoMC, and will run from 31 July to 20 November. 5. Gospel Methodist Church 5th Anniversary: On 24 July we celebrated Gospel MC’s 5th Anniversary. 7. Ronald McDonald House Ministry: On 24 September from 3:00pm to 8:45pm at 21 Monash Ave, Nedlands. The House only needs 12 volunteers, to help raise $500 to support the Ronald McDonald House’s ‘Home for Dinner’. 8. Cambodia Short Term Mission: GoMC will have a Short Term Mission trip to Phnom Penh from 2 to 13 December. We need to raise $10,000 per year to support 1.Single-Mom Community 2.Discipleship Training 3.Church Planting 4.Business Mission 5.Galilee School 6.Students Scholarship 7.Theological Seminary 8. Kids Church 9.Galilee Kindergarten in Cambodia Hope Mission Centre ministries. Brothers and sisters are encouraged to participate in this offering in order to foster the pastors and save souls. 6. Street Evangelism: Meet at the State Library of WA (25 Francis St Perth WA 6000) on Saturday 27 Aug at 2:00pm. IMMANUEL METHODIST CHURCH 1. Edwin Ho and Shulin Weng’s Registration of Marriage and Blessing Service on 21 June. 5. West District Social Concern Commission organised a talk on the Holistic Church on 12 July at IMC. 2. IMC participated the Table Tennis Competition organised by West District Adult Fellowship on 25 and 26 June at GMC. 6. Sunday School for Night Service commenced on 17 July. 3. Dinner for Night Service commenced on 3 July. 7. Some IMC members participated in the LifeGame organised by Curtin Immanuel Club from 29 to 31 July. 4. IMC Bowling Competition was organised by the Chinese Young Adult on 9 July. 9. Sibu North District’s pastors visited IMC on 29 July. 9
