Coach Parrington’s philosophy focuses on a
repetition-based coaching model that relies on
athletes taking year-round ownership of their
efforts to improve their skills. Realizing that there
is something greater than the individual is an
important element of this philosophy. This allfor-one,
one-for-all mentality builds trust and a
team-first environment throughout the program.

NICK MCMULLEN ’18
MAJOR: APPLIED MATH AND
STATISTICS

Nick McMullen ’18 started playing
T-ball at age four and has played
baseball ever since. “The game gives
me a home away from home,” he says.
At Macalester, McMullen plays left field
and first base, and also spends time on
the pitcher’s mound.
“There is no way to replicate the nerves
and excitement of your first game and
the rush from your first success,” he
says. In 2016, McMullen earned All-
MIAC, All-Region third team, ABCA
All-Region third team, and Academic
All-Conference honors.
Off the field, McMullen volunteered as
a math tutor at a St. Paul middle school.
Through coursework at Macalester, the
applied math and statistics major discovered
a passion for teaching. He spent
last summer teaching debate and math
in San Francisco to low-income middleschoolers,
and is working this summer
as a resident advisor/instructor at a Yale
enrichment program for high schoolers
from around the world.
Math gives him academic purpose;
baseball gives him a community. “We
learn to work as a team in practice, in
the weight room, and in games toward
a common goal,” he says. “That teamwork
and camaraderie don’t stop when
we leave the field: they carry over into
our everyday lives. That’s the part
of being on a college team that sticks
with you for a lifetime.”
