Head coach Jason Muhl has built a comprehensive
tennis program in which student-athletes refine
strokes, build mental tools, and foster connections
around campus and within Macalester’s alumni
network. The result is a passionate, positive,
well-rounded group of teammates prepared for
success—at Macalester and for the rest of their
lives.

“Playing college tennis was my favorite
part of going to Macalester,” says
Brian Utz ’16. “Being on the team
was a terrific way to play tennis at a
high level and make lifelong friends.”
In 2016, the Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (MIAC) awarded
Utz the Arthur Ashe Award, which
recognizes a senior tennis student-athlete
with outstanding sportsmanship
and exemplary athletic, academic,
and humanitarian accomplishments.
He also earned places on the All-
MIAC team for singles and doubles
as well as inclusion on the All-MIAC
Sportsmanship Team.
A team captain since his sophomore
year, Utz says he became a more
effective leader and communicator,
and a more compassionate person,
through playing tennis for Mac.
“I appreciated being a part of such
a fun and supportive group,” he says.
“My former teammates are some of
my best friends.”
Utz graduated in May and is now a
senior business analyst for a branch
of UnitedHealth Group called Optum.
Says the economics major, “Macalester
taught me how to approach
problems holistically, interpret data
appropriately, and clearly communicate
arguments to a wide audience.”
