Head coach Jason Muhl has built a comprehensive<br />

tennis program in which student-athletes refine<br />

strokes, build mental tools, and foster connections<br />

around campus and within <strong>Macalester</strong>’s alumni<br />

“Playing college tennis was my favorite<br />

part of going to <strong>Macalester</strong>,” says<br />

Brian Utz ’16. “Being on the team<br />

was a terrific way to play tennis at a<br />

high level and make lifelong friends.”<br />

In 2016, the Minnesota Intercollegiate<br />

Athletic Conference (MIAC) awarded<br />

Utz the Arthur Ashe Award, which<br />

recognizes a senior tennis student-athlete<br />

with outstanding sportsmanship<br />

and exemplary athletic, academic,<br />

and humanitarian accomplishments.<br />

He also earned places on the All-<br />

MIAC team for singles and doubles<br />

as well as inclusion on the All-MIAC<br />

Sportsmanship Team.<br />

A team captain since his sophomore<br />

year, Utz says he became a more<br />

effective leader and communicator,<br />

and a more compassionate person,<br />

through playing tennis for Mac.<br />

“I appreciated being a part of such<br />

a fun and supportive group,” he says.<br />

“My former teammates are some of<br />

my best friends.”<br />

Utz graduated in May and is now a<br />

senior business analyst for a branch<br />

of UnitedHealth Group called Optum.<br />

Says the economics major, “<strong>Macalester</strong><br />

taught me how to approach<br />

problems holistically, interpret data<br />

appropriately, and clearly communicate<br />

arguments to a wide audience.”
