COMPETITION AND BALANCE
The athletes in Macalester’s basketball program love
competition and strive for excellence in everything
they do. Coach Tim Whittle taps into that drive,
challenging players and giving them the tools to be
active problem-solvers. Surrounded by a close-knit
group of teammates and engaged in the greater
campus community, student-athletes reach their goals
and find success during their four years at Macalester
in the classroom, on the court, and beyond.

Played at Washington University, contributing to
a 79–27 record and two NCAA Tournaments,
including an Elite Eight appearance in 1996
Before coaching career, had a six-year stint in
corporate banking, including serving as Manager
of Finance with the Florida Marlins of Major
League Baseball

ASSISTANT COACH JAY ANDERSON
Joined Macalester in 2012 after an illustrious
playing career in Germany, Australia, Romania,
New Zealand and Luxembourg
Previously served as Graduate Assistant at the
University of Oregon
Four-year letterman, two-time PAC 10 All-Academic
honoree, as a Forward for the Oregon Ducks from
2000 to 2004
Minnesota All-State selection and Mr. Basketball
finalist in high school
Married to Kelsey Anderson and father to Grace
(daughter) and Oliver (son)

many more skills I use in working with
others in my personal and professional life
today,” says former basketball forward
Patrick Piepkorn ’12.
Piepkorn remembers his favorite Macalester
basketball game, a road contest at St.
John’s University. Piepkorn grew up in
Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, a small town near
St. John’s. “The Piepkorn family reunion
happened to coincide with the game, so
I had more than 25 family members and
friends in attendance to watch the most
meaningful win of my career.”
With the help of a Macalester economics
professor, Piepkorn secured an internship
with startup Adjuvant near his hometown.
The next year he was accepted to
Securian Financial Group’s Management
Development Program, which led to a
full-time job at Securian. Now a client
relationship advisor, Piepkorn’s builds and
manages relationships with 15 to 25 of
Securian’s Fortune 1,000 clients.
