During Coach Betsy Emerson’s six years at
Macalester, the team has consistently ranked in
the top 10 in the Central Region and has finished
in the top five in the MIAC in each of the past
three seasons. At Macalester, Emerson has
coached a five-time All-American and several
All-Regional and All-Conference finishers in both
track and cross country. In 2015, Kimber Meyer
became Macalester’s first MIAC cross country
champion since 2004. Also during this time,
several student-athletes have established new
school records and competed at the national level.
HEAD COACH BETSY EMERSON
Named head coach at Macalester in 2010
Formerly head women’s cross country and
women’s track and field coach at Luther College
for 17 years
Named Conference Coach of the Year six times in
cross country and three times in track and field
Led Luther to a third-place finish at Cross Country
Nationals in 2000, and a fourth-place finish at
Outdoor Track and Field Nationals in 1997
During Emerson’s career, she has coached two
NCAA Division III cross country individual champions,
a national champion relay team, a five-time
national champion distance runner, nine cross
country All-Americans, and more than 50 All-
Americans in track and field

“Nothing beats the feeling of pushing
through every mile, every hill, every
moment you feel like you can’t possibly
go any longer in a 6,000-meter cross
country race,” says Kimber Meyer ’17.
In 2015, Meyer became the third Scot
to win the Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (MIAC) championship.
She also placed fifth at the NCAA
Central Region Meet and finished 30th
at the NCAA Division III Championships
to earn her third All-America award.
Meyer is the only active women’s cross
country athlete in the nation to be a
three-time All-American.
Despite her numerous accolades,
Meyer says, “What really makes racing
so special is doing it with all of your
teammates. Though we work hard and
set big goals, we also have lots of fun
together. Our pasta parties before races
are my favorite!”
Last year, Meyer received the Elite 22
Award from the MIAC, which honors
the student-athlete with the highest
GPA at each conference championship.
Meyer, a biology major, holds a
3.95 GPA. “Professors are amazingly
enthusiastic and committed to helping
their students,” says Meyer. “I will leave
Macalester as a more well-rounded
person with a much wider skill set than
when I came in.”
