On Friday 30th June, students from King’s attended a trip to one of the
premier sporting events in the world, the Wimbledon Tennis
Championships. A number of lucky Year 9 students were chosen to
attend the championships as part of the PE department’s reward trip.
The group selected had made excellent progress throughout the
academic year, showing exceptional commitment to their GCSE PE
studies and the King’s enrichment programme.
Staff and students had an early start to their first morning, departing
from the Academy at 4am. They arrived in Wimbledon during the late
morning, all in good time to see play commence! Students spent the
day soaking up the atmosphere which included experiencing ‘Henman
Hill’ and the famous Centre Court. Seated for the day on the No.3
Court, students enjoyed watching the action of the Men’s and
Women’s doubles.
The highlight of the day was having the opportunity to
see five-time champions in the ladies’ doubles, Serena
and Venus Williams, who beat Slovenian pair, Andreja
Klepac and Katarina Srebotnik 7-5, 6-3. Students were
in awe of the strength and power of the American
siblings as they played.
Day two of the trip saw students visit an elite training
venue at the University of Surrey which offers world
class sports facilities. Students had the opportunity to
imagine life as a professional tennis player, practising
their serve and even holding a mini tournament
between themselves! As students left to return back
to King’s they waved goodbye to Miss Brett from the
coach, who stayed behind to play for England in a
Lacrosse match against the USA.
Students did the Academy proud and demonstrated
exemplary behaviour throughout the two days. The
trip was a valuable experience to students who
enjoyed spectating at the world’s oldest tennis
competition and we very much look forward to
returning to Wimbledon again next year!
On Saturday 25th June, parents, guardians and families of
current students were invited to visit the Academy to see our
fantastic new building. It was the perfect opportunity for
King’s to show visitors just how much our state-of-the-art
facilities have to offer to students whilst studying at King’s.
The response to the announcement of an open day was
astonishing with over 800 visitors walking through the doors.
There were numerous positive comments to staff about the
new facilities with a strong community feel to the day. The
sports hall was full to capacity with students and their parents
as they listened to the Principal’s welcome speech before
taking a tour of the new building.
Teaching staff were on hand to meet with parents to answer
any questions parents may have had. Visitors even had the
pleasure of enjoying the very first performance since moving
to the new building from the King’s choir, which took place in
the main Atrium.
A very big ‘thank you’ goes to all King’s staff who helped make
the morning a real success.
Due to the open day’s popularity, a further opportunity for
parents to visit King’s Leadership Academy will be taking
place in October. Keep checking upcoming ASPIRE
newsletters and our calendar for updates.
A very big ‘thank-you’ goes to ‘Supporters of King’s’ who were on hand
throughout the day to answer visitor questions and help run our open
event. A valued part of the King’s family, they also organised a raffle,
the winners of which have now been announced.
Winning parents have been contacted and prizes are available to be
collected from the academy reception.
Dear Parent/Carer,
There has been much publicity recently surrounding the High Court judgement of Jon Platt vs the Isle of Wight, where he took
his child on holiday during term time.
In the Isle of Wight case, the magistrates thought it was a pertinent fact that the school itself had described 90% attendance as
'satisfactory'. It would be highly unlikely that a similar court ruling would be made for King’s pupils, as our minimum
expectation is 97%. I would like to advise you on the following matters relating to the Isle of Wight case:
The High Court judgement in the Isle of Wight was based on their low attendance standards of 90%. As a parent, it is your legal
responsibility to ensure that your child is in full time education. As you are aware, King’s minimum attendance expectation is
97%.
Since the High Court judgement in the Isle of Wight, a second couple have been found guilty after taking their children on
holiday during term time. They argued the same High Court ruling, however, the couple lost, were fined and subsequently
prosecuted.
It remains the case that schools continue to have the power to issue a Fixed Penalty Notice if a family takes an unauthorised
holiday. Nick Gibb, the Minister for Schools stated, “While family holidays are enriching experiences, the school year is designed
to give families the opportunity for these breaks without having to disrupt their children’s education.”
Please be reminded that any child that is below the 97% threshold set by the Academy, may not graduate in to the year above in
September. They will be required to attend Summer School in order to complete work that has been missed. Privileges such as
trips and other activities, deemed as a reward for pupils who uphold our expectations, will also be removed. Please refer to the
Parent Handbook for further details on our policies.
The Academy has taken this action in order to uphold the highest expectations for all of our pupils. It is only when our pupils
maintain the highest standards, that they achieve their full potential. Our Academy motto is ‘Credimus’, which means we
believe. We can only support your child if they attend school every day. We believe that high attendance promotes high levels
of achievement. This standard is supported by the Department for Education;
‘The difference in achievement is also evident with the English Baccalaureate, where pupils with no absence are around 10.2
times more likely to achieve the English Baccalaureate than pupils missing 15-20 per cent of KS4 lessons.’
Department of Education
The link between absence and attainment at KS2 and KS4
Please do not hesitate to contact the Academy if you have any questions or require additional information.
Thank you for your continued support.
Mr. Shane Ierston
Principal
King’s Leadership Academy
On Monday 4th July, King’s opened the doors for its first
Sixth Form open evening. It was an opportunity for current
Year 10 students to learn what Sixth Form life would be like
and also discuss the range of A Level subjects that King’s
has to offer.
Students from external schools also attended and made up
a third of the number of visitors on the evening. It is
exciting to know that other young people in the area have
recognised the excellent programme of study that we have
to offer.
There will be an open day on Saturday 15th October
between 12-4pm where current and new students can tour
the facilities, speak to members of staff and make their
formal applications if they haven’t already done so. For
more information, our prospectus, course book and
application forms are available online at
For the whole of this week 14 of our cadets were selected to attend a
CCF summer camp at RAF Valley in Anglesey. RAF Valley is the home
of fighter jet pilot training where elite members of the RAF become the
next generation of Red Arrow and RAF fighter pilots.
The cadets enjoyed an action packed week in which they visited the IV
(R) squadron hangar and looked around one of the squadron’s Hawk
TMk2s, accompanied by some of the engineers that work for BAE and
Babcock at Valley.
They also visited the flight line and watched the engineers "see off"
one of the jets, and "see it back in" after a training sortie. Another part
of the day was spent in the BAE Systems Hawk synthetic training
facility (simulator), where they split into pairs and took part in the
“Wind Tunnel” challenge, where they had to create a miniature wind
tunnel using a hair dryer, a box and various other items, in order to see
the effects of wind on the aerodynamics of objects.
The final part of the day was a visit to the Survival
Equipment section. Here they tried on a selection of
flight equipment and had a brief look at the parachute
bay and the life raft bay, where they met pilots, had
flying lessons in a simulator and practiced their
combat skills on the field. During the evenings they
took part in a number of fun activities such as gokarting,
cinema, rock climbing, bowling and much
more!
One lucky cadet may even be picked from this group
to fly in an RAF Hawk, a once in a lifetime opportunity
- unless of course they have aspirations to become a
pilot themselves!
We have had a lot of complimentary feedback from
the base about how the cadets have conducted
themselves.
Well done to all cadets!
King’s first annual Creative Showcase was held on Thursday 7th
July. The evening celebrated students creative talents, beginning
with a Grand Art Exhibition in our brand new Atrium. Students
had all worked extremely hard in the run up to the evening,
attending Art Club to complete work to the highest standard, in
time for the exhibition. Art Ambassadors were involved in the
whole exhibition process, from selecting themes to display, to
presenting the work and displaying the boards in the Atrium.
This will support their Art GCSE, as well as giving students an
insight into gallery presentation and World of Work experience.
Art Leaders were on hand at the exhibition,
manning the stands and acting as gallery
experts. They confidently explained the
projects as visitors leisurely looked around,
demonstrating a huge commitment to the
arts. Visitors then made their way to our new
theatre where they watched performances
from talented drama and music students
showcasing their talents.
The evening finished by celebrating
achievement across the visual and performing
arts. Students were formally presented with
certificates and awards to recognise their
achievements and hard work from across the
year. The Creative Staff would like to thank all
students who participated in the event for
their hard work.
Nobel Club runs after school for students who are interested in the
exciting world of science. So far students have made bubbles containing
methane gas before finding out what happens when they are lit, they
have seen the very loud and colourful combustion of alcohol vapours
and they have watched the explosive reaction between very reactive
metals and water!
There are plenty more experiments to come next year too that whizz,
pop, fizz and bang and students will be challenged to explain why these
amazing things are happening before their very eyes. There will also be
other experiments that are quieter and slower but just as thoughtprovoking
from the different areas of biology, chemistry and physics.
On Saturday 2nd of July , Year 9 student Mya
Johnson met an international dressage rider
along with her pony Doylan Golden
Delicious. Ilona Bax-Goris travelled all the
way from Holland to give Mya, along with other
dressage riders, the opportunity to meet and
experience a dressage lesson with her.
Dressage is a highly skilled form of riding
performed in exhibition and competition, as well
as an "art" sometimes pursued solely for the sake
of mastery. Ilona Bax-Goris is an Olympic
dressage rider and supports the national
team along with her husband Bart Bax-Goris. Mya
throroughly enjoyed learning and picking up tips
from such a successful dressage rider. What a
truly great experience!
After months of fundraising the time had finally arrived for Miss Owens to
take to the skies to raise money for ‘CRY’ also known as ‘Cardiac Risk in
the Young’, whose vision it is to prevent young sudden cardiac deaths
through awareness, screening and research and supporting affected
families.
Arriving in Flookburgh on Saturday 28th May and excited to do the jump,
Miss Owens surprisingly didn't feel nervous. Taking off into the air, her
skydive northwest instructor informed her once they reached 14000 feet
before opening the door and preparing to jump. With her feet dangling out
of the plane, she finally started to get butterflies in her stomach.
Miss Owens said the jump was exhilarating which involved free falling for
30 seconds at 120 mph and cruising for 6 minutes before landing back
on the ground.
The total money raised was £1156.71. Miss Owens wants to say a huge
thank to anyone who donated. It’s going to change the lives of young
people struggling to come to terms with the loss of a loved one.
It is with great pride that I announce the launch of Windsor House, our
fifth and final House at King’s.
Due to our academy’s continued popularity and expansion, a fifth house
allows us to maintain Academic Tutor groups that are a maximum of 24
students per class. Mentoring and ASPIRE sessions are run in tutor
groups and play an invaluable part in the character building of our
students. The addition of our fifth house means that tutors have the
time to mentor and support students effectively.
I am delighted to formally introduce myself as Head of Windsor, a
prestigious house named after the royal family and our house patron,
Queen Elizabeth II. This comes at an exciting time for us at King’s, with
us having recently moved in to our fantastic New Build. Just like the
other houses, we will have our own house corridor to decorate with
displays and celebrate the achievement of our Windsor students.
Students will be specially hand-picked to be part of Windsor House and
the lucky members will be announced on Tuesday 19 th July.
Windsor House is named after the
Windsor dynasty who have reigned in the
United Kingdom since 1917. Windsor
House ‘Leader Mascot’ is Queen Elizabeth
II. The Queen is Head of State of the UK
and 15 other Commonwealth realms. The
elder daughter of King George VI and
Queen Elizabeth, she was born in 1926
and became Queen at the age of 25, and
has reigned through more than five
decades of enormous social change and
development.

For six long gruelling weeks, a small group of Year 7 and 8 King’s
students have been pledging their efforts to complete a Dragon’s
Den project. During this time, the students demonstrated their:
self-awareness, professionalism, team-work, assertiveness and
innovative creativity. The weekly tasks included: researching
possible product ideas, creating product names and descriptions,
designing and pitching.
There were many inspiring product ideas ranging from: an all in
one stationery pen from Extreme Stationery; a multi-sensory split
screen TV from H.A.Q Technologies; and a Chargeable Lunchbox
from Lunch It. After a nail-biting round of pitch performances and
careful deliberation, the team of dragons consisting of: An
English Expert (Mrs Sharp), Finance Specialist (Mr Robinson) and
Communications Leader (Miss McCarthy), the majority decided
that they wanted to invest their money into H.A.Q Technologies!
Since working with this talented group of individuals, I have been
thoroughly overjoyed by the students’ enthusiasm and dedication
in aspiring to succeed. For this reason, I would like to
congratulate: Samanta Cice, Alicia Jones, Kiera Ellard, Geoffrey
O’Keefe, Kane Litherland, Jay Williams and last but least the
winners, Quillan Owen, Haydon-Chamley Cooper and Ashton
Jones. You should all be extremely proud of yourselves.
