NORTHEAST TRENCHLESS ASSOCIATION: NORTHEAST TRENCHLESS ASSOCIATION, INC. GROUNDWORK FOR SUCCESS, SEAMLESS CONTINUITY 2004 - 2016 The Northeast Trenchless Association (NTA) was founded in 2004 by Scott Kelly, ETTI with the goal of advancing the professionalism of members and increasing awareness of the benefits of trenchless construction among owners and operators of utilities, contractors, engineers and the general public. Formed initially from a group of progressively minded HDD practitioners the NTA was from the outset a focused and dedicated organization, committed to the growth and future of the New England trenchless industry. Immediately, in 2004, the NTA began the tradition of holding monthly meetings at various locations throughout New England, helping to raise the profile of HDD and trenchless technology. Training and professional development was a central focus of NTA activity. Consistently, the organization delivered quality education, industry-specific information, business and social networking opportunities to the New England trenchless community and wider public. Early in its second year, the NTA hosted its first ever two day seminar “HDD Good Practices Guidelines” March 7-8, 2005 in Framingham MA at the Sheraton Tara hotel. On May 10, 2006 NTA staged its first Demo Day at the Topsfield Fairgrounds to promote greater public awareness of trenchless construction methods – it was a popular success despite heavy rains moving the event indoors! The 5th Annual Meeting held January 12-13, 2009 at Holiday Inn in Boxborough demonstrated how far the organization had progressed in only a few years. With two days of speakers, seminars, awards, and dinner meetings, and over 100 members in attendance, the 5th Anniversary meeting was the most successful and well attended to date. It was surpassed a year later at the 6th Annual Meeting in Boxborough January 25- 26, 2010, with record setting attendance, 22 workshops/seminars and a mini trade show with 18 equipment and product suppliers. At this event, for his invaluable contributions to the organization, Frank Canon was presented the Founders Award, the only person from outside the NTA ever bestowed this honor. 18 NASTT-NE NORTHEAST JOURNAL OF TRENCHLESS TECHNOLOGY <strong>PRACTICES</strong> 2016 | WWW.NASTT-NE.ORG
“THE NORTHEAST TRENCHLESS ASSOCIATION IS MADE UP OF CONCERNED AND DEDICATED MEMBERS WHO TAKE THEIR BUSINESSES VERY SERIOUSLY AND ARE COMMITTED TO RAISING THEIR LEVEL OF EXPERTISE.” -Warren Hagenbuch, NTA President 2005 Successful events like these were mirrored in the broadening professional and geographic diversity of the NTA membership base. At first the NTA was comprised primarily of HDD contractors throughout New England, supported by associate member companies serving the trenchless construction industry. “WE ARE DEDICATED TO IMPROVING OUR BUSINESSES AND SUPPORTING THE FUTURE OF TRENCHLESS CONSTRUCTION.” -Scott Kelly, 1st NTA President 2004 Two years later, in 2006, the membership had already increased by 30% including the first consulting engineer member. By 2009 the NTA had added members from Connecticut and upstate New York and companies involved in auger boring, pipe jacking and CIPP rehab. This growth, along with the greater understanding and acceptance of trenchless methods across the Northeast, was made possible because of the steady outreach and education efforts of the NTA leadership, and individual members. The original vision, rooted solidly in the New England HDD community, flourished and grew into a dynamic forward-looking organization with strong representation in all sectors of trenchless construction. In January 1, 2016, as the next step forwards, the NTA joined the North American Society for Trenchless Technology as the new NASTT-NE Chapter. Best remembered from the past dozen years will be the friendships gained through the NTA, lively professional exchanges and debates, inspiration and excitement from new ideas and technical innovations, challenges overcome, projects completed, camaraderie and friendly competition, all the learning, fun and good memories to be had along the way. By serving as a forum for sharing information on important industry topics, and by fostering networking opportunities, bringing engaged people together, the NTA helped create new markets for trenchless applications, opening new avenues for the Northeast’s trenchless technology industry to become better understood, grow and prosper.
