Being nervous is actually a good
thing. Every tennis player should
thing
get nervous. Getting nervous is
actually a sign that you really
want it... bad. It is what is called
the ‘IT‘ factor.
This is what causes everyone
from the youngest person, to the
oldest person, to compete. Everyone
wants to be the best, to
get the best. And when you don’t
get it, peer pressure causes you
to work harder to get ‘IT’.
A player who doesn’t want it
wouldn’t care, and won’t give
any effort. Remember the more
nerves you have, actually shows
how badly you really want to win.
How many times have you heard it said “Keep
your eyes on the ball“. Let’s add something more
to that... “until you’re finished hitting it”. What
that does, is it keeps your head from moving, so
you can start and finish the shot properly.
Statistics show that in a tennis
match, you only hit around 15%
ners
of winners. That means 85% of
the points are dictated by errors.
It is therefore totally in your
hands, to change the outcome
of the matches you are presently
losing, by simply focusing on
reducing your error output.
Go for your shots when you have
them. But no matter how much
more winners you go for, it will
always add up to around 15%.
But if you reduce your errors to
let’s say 5 or 10% less, you’d be
beating players you are currently
losing to, and winning much
more matches.
Are you Drinking
Properly?
You’ve got to constantly monitor
your fluid intake when you play,
so you can stay hydrated. Never
wait until you get thirsty before
you decide to drink some fluids.
Just getting thirsty, means your
body is dehydrated and is calling
for you to relieve the thirst.
Water is always very good to
drink, but when you sweat on
the court, you lose sodium from
your body, so it’s very important
that you replace the sodium you
lost. Get electrolytes and sports
drinks that contain sodium so
you can always hydrate propely.
You will have a life after your tennis career is over, and you will
need to have some basic life skills... like buying a car, a house,
handling your wealth and balancing your checkbook. This
knowledge is critical. Everyone is not going to make a living
as a professional tennis player, so continue your education, if
college calls. For some of you, after college, with your degree,
you can still become a professional tennis player.
It’s unhealthy for junior tennis
players to always be on the court
thing
practicing, without taking any
time off, away from the court.
Taking time off, away from the
courts, is just like going to sleep
at night. After a good night’s
rest, you wake up refreshed, and
ready to face everything. The
same is true for your tennis.
Just taking a day or a weekend
off, going to the mall or doing
something fun, allows junior tennis
players to relax, and be able
to upgrade their focus.
Without taking time away from
the courts, players tend to ‘burn
out‘, at a very early age.
Junior tennis players are high
perfomance athletes. That instantly
puts them in a elite class.
As an athlete, there are certain
disciplines that you must always
observed.
Getting to bed early is a discipline
that every serious athlete
and their coaches pay close attention
to. You just don’t go to
bed when you get tired, or after
you’ve finished watching all your
television shows.
All athletes need that deep REM
sleep that you get between the
hours of 10:00 pm to 2:00 am.
Sleeping between those hours is
rks
necessary for the body to function
properly.
down. Now try to pick it up. No I
didn’t say pick it up, (which you
did), I said ‘try‘ to pick it up.
As you noticed, there was no
‘trying‘ you were either picking it
no grey area. Even if the object
is heavy and you can’t lift it, you
are either lifting it, or not lifting it.
So when it comes to tennis, and
you make all the excuses for your
attitude and poor effort, saying,
“I was trying”. There is no trying
you are either doing it, or not doing
it. You are making excuses
and not doing the things you can
do. It’s your choice... just do it!
Tar
Cover Story

iq Simons
Tariq Simons was born February
27th, 2001 in Bermuda to a Bermudian
father, Ras Mykkal Simons and a
Jamaican mother, Nathalee Simons
(nee Johnson). He attended Purvis
Primary School in Warwick, Bermuda
before he and his parents relocated
to Jamaica in 2012 to give him a better
opportunity to pursue his dream
of being a tennis professional.
Tariq’s potential to play tennis was
discovered in Bermuda at a Simons
family gathering. At age 7, he was
trying his hand at table tennis when
his father’s cousin, Brian Swan, noted
that Tariq had really good forehand
form and mentioned to his mother
that “Tariq should try playing tennis”.
Tariq’s mother called the first name
she saw in the telephone book ‘under
Tennis Instructors’ Howard Cross.
Howard was the tennis pro at the Reefs
Hotel in Southampton, Bermuda and
arrangement was made for Tariq to
start tennis lessons. He was immediately
impressed with Tariq’s hand-eye
coordination, motor skills, form and
ability to absorb the instructions given
in a short time. Regarded as probably
the best development coach in
Bermuda, Howard spent 12 months
training Tariq before putting him in
his first tournament, the 2009 Coral
Beach Junior Tennis Tournament.
Tariq lost 4-0, 4-0, but his form and
passion had been noted by all. Tariq
won his first tournament, 6-3, 6-3 over
Scott Redmond in the Langton Junior
Tennis Tournament on April 7th, 2011.
By the time Tariq left Bermuda for Jamaica,
he was ranked number two in
the boys under 10 and 4th in the boys
under 12.
Tariq has spent the summer of 2010
in Jamaica and participated for two
weeks in the Russell Tennis Academy
summer camp at the Rose Hall Hilton
in Montego Bay. Tariq’s parents wanted
him to develop under the Richard
Russell Tennis Academy program, so
they rented a home in Montego Bay in
August 2012, just up the hill from the
Rose Hall Hilton. Unfortunately, the
Russell’s had relocated their Academy
to Kington. Gary Gedallia was the
new tennis pro at the Hilton and became
Tariq’s new coach.
In 2014, Tariq tennis training and
development moved from the Hilton
Rose Hall to Sea Garden Hotel
on Gloucester Ave, Montego under
Coach Maureen Rankine.
It Is Time To Stretch!
One aspect of fitness that is usually overlooked
is flexibility. Flexibility is usually defined
as the ability to be bent without breaking. To
relate this definition to tennis, it is the ability to
play without becoming injured. So if you have
good flexibility, you should be able to reach for
every ball without hurting or straining yourself.
So how do you improve your flexibility, so that
you can play longer without injury?
The answer is simple. You must stretch.
Stretching is the lengthening of muscles and
body tissue, in order to improve movement and
function. You do this by putting tension on targeted
muscle and tissue over a period of time.
This is usually done at the end range of motion
at the particular joint the muscle and tissue
cross. For example, to stretch your hamstrings,
you could position yourself by sitting on the floor
with your legs straight and back against a wall.
Then to initiate the stretch, you would lean forward
trying to touch your toes. If you try this
stretch, you will feel a pull in the back of your
thighs. As you begin to stretch the muscle, the
pulling sensation might be intense. Don’t worry.
Just go as far as you can tolerate. Then, with
time and repetition, you will feel less pulling and
have improved motion. You can repeat this process
with every joint in your body.
So how often and for how long do you
need to stretch to see improvements in flexibility?
This answer actually varies somewhat
from person to person. However, as a general
rule, you must stretch a particular muscle for
at least 30 seconds per day for 3-7 days out of
the week. Again this differs on individual factors
such as your current flexibility and activity level
throughout the day. For example, if you sit most
of the day, you are more susceptible to developing
tightness in your hamstrings. To prevent
this from occurring, you will have to stretch your
hamstrings more often than other people who
are more physically active throughout the day.
So make sure to adjust your stretching routine
depending on where your greatest flexibility restrictions
are to help prevent injury to you more
vulnerable muscles.
