ATTENTION ALL RECYCLERS: River Valley Paper Company would greatly appreciate if we could dump our newspapers in the bin WITHOUT plastic bags IF possible. The plastic bags clog their machines. Thank you for your cooperation. rRECYCLE! The local company, River Valley Paper Company is now accepting the following materials for recycling: • Newspapers • Office & School Paper • Mail • Phonebooks • Magazines • Catalogs • Hard & Soft Bound Books • Brown Paper Bags • Cardboard ~ INCLUDING CEREAL, TISSUE & FROZEN DINNER BOXES, etc. The bin is located in the east parking lot near the soccer fields. Arrowhead receives fundraising money from the amount of materials collected in the recycling bin. Mr. La Badie plans to purchase trees for the Arrowhead Nature Zone with the money earned from the recycling bin. FOR A GREAT CAUSE PLEASE READ… My name is Robbie Deppisch and I am now in fifth grade. As most of you know, I have been saving the tabs of aluminum cans since first grade, to donate to Akron Children’s Hospital. I want to let you know that my friend Jacob Diefendorff, who is in Mr. Smith’s first grade class, will be collecting the can tabs for Arrowhead Primary School now that I am at the middle school. Please remember, the hospital turns the tabs in for money to purchase hand-held games, books, puzzles and art supplies for the kids to play while they are on a dialysis machine, sometimes for many, many hours. PLEASE, PLEASE, when drinking or eating from an aluminum can, pull off the tab and put it in a bag and send it to Arrowhead School with your child, to Jacob Diefendorff, in Mr. Smith’s class, room #107. Please get your friends and families involved! The last day to collect tabs is the last day of school! How to teach a Child Honesty The character trait for October is Honesty is one of the most challenging values you must teach your child. In their younger years, children don’t truly understand the harmful consequences of being dishonest, and it takes a great deal of patience on a parent’s part. The following steps give you some helpful tools. 1) Model honesty for your child. The most important tool any parent can use is practicing what you teach. If you lie to your children or they overhear you lie to someone else, they think it is acceptable behavior. 2) Encourage your child to tell the truth and to share their thoughts and feelings with you. If they know they can be honest with you about what’s on their mind without you getting mad or critical, they see that honesty is the best approach. 3) Avoid questions that make it easy for kids to lie. If you already know your child spilled her juice on the carpet, don’t ask “Did you spill this juice?” This question encourages kids to lie to stay out of trouble. Instead simply say, “Please clean up your spilled juice.” HONESTY Students should be truthful and trustworthy in their relationships with others. You don’t want your child to be so honest that she hurts someone’s feelings. Even if she hates the dress her grandma made for her, she needs to learn how to say something generic instead of being brutally honest. 5) Give praise when your child tells the truth, particularly if you’ve reprimanded her before for lying. Praise boosts self-confidence and encourages positive behavior. 6) Don’t lose your temper when your child lies. Take the circumstance and turn it into a teaching experience by asking her, “How do you think you should have handled this?” This approach works much better than simply scolding harshly and punishing her. Tips & Warnings It’s fun to kid around and tease your child, but don’t overdo it. Too much sarcasm and kidding can lead your child to constantly question your truthfulness.
