Step 8<br />

Acknowledge the key role of physical activity in the prevention of overweight<br />

and obesity<br />

Priority actions to commence in first year:<br />

• Implement the National Physical Activity Plan <strong>for</strong> <strong>Ireland</strong>.<br />

• Develop nutrition and physical activity guidelines <strong>for</strong> weight loss in overweight<br />

and obese individuals.<br />

Step 9<br />

Allocate resources according to need, in particular to those population groups<br />

most in need of support in the prevention and management of obesity, with<br />

particular emphasis on families and children during the first 1,000 days of life.<br />

Priority actions to commence in first year:<br />

• Assess the needs of vulnerable groups as the basis of allocation of resources <strong>for</strong><br />

preventative and treatment services <strong>for</strong> children and adults.<br />

Step 10<br />

Develop a multi-annual research programme that is closely allied to policy<br />

actions, invest in surveillance and evaluate progress on an annual basis.<br />

Priority actions to commence in first year:<br />

• Develop a multi-annual obesity research plan.<br />

• Develop proposals <strong>for</strong> a nutrition health surveillance system and a national<br />

physical activity surveillance system.<br />

• Report annually on the Plan and conduct a mid-term review on overall progress<br />

in achieving the targets.<br />
