18 c a r i b b e a n t i m e s . a g Friday 23rd September 2016 Antiguan named first female football official for FIFA World Cup By Vanroy Burnes Antigua & Barbuda can boast of being the proud home of the first women’s football official to be appointed to a FIFA World Cup competition. Antiguan born Kelesha Antoine has been appointed by FIFA, the world governing body for football to the Women’s Under 17 world cup finals in Aman Jordan in the United Emirates. Kelesha Antione have been appointed as a referee fitness Instructor for the tournament which runs from 30th September to 22nd October 2016. Antoine is currently a Caribbean Football Union (CFU) fitness instructor and has been for the past two years and a CONCACAF instructor for the past year. She left the Island on Thursday for the united emirates in preparations for the tournament. The 33-year old Antoine started out as referee with the Antigua & Barbuda football referee association at the age of 17 years in 2000 to become the first female referee in Antigua & Barbuda. She noted that hard work and good discipline is the key to success. Ms. Antoine holds a BSC degree in Physical Education & Sports which she obtain in a Cuban University, She also specializing in Olympic weightlifting. Ms. Antoine was appointed to the Women’s Olympic qualifiers in February of this year as a fitness instructor and was also appointed to the CONCA- CAF U-15 Championship in Orlando Florida in August. Kelesha will also attend an elite women’s referee course for the 2018 -2019 world cup. The Antiguan women football official is appealing to other young women to get involve in sports at all levels since numerous opportunities are available and are in great demand. She expressed sincere thanks to the senior members of the football referee association to include Mr. Ivor Davis, the late Sinclair Crump, Franklyn Christian, Rolston James, Telford Thomas and the Antigua & Barbuda Football Association for giving her the opportunity to get to where she is. Ms. Antione become the second Antiguan football official to be appointed to FIFA WORLD Cup joining Curtis Charles who was appointed to the FIFA World CUP in 2004 an assistant referee. Friday 23rd September 2016 c a r i b b e a n t i m e s . a g 19 WICB set up internal team to assess PCL technical structure and market support By Vanroy Burnes The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) at its board of directors meeting in Dominica on September 10 th has set up a review and internal team with a mandate to assess the PCL. The team will have a detailed look at technical, structural and marketing support for the franchises, the review should be completed and available in six months to coincide with end of the 2016/7 season due to be completed in March next year. The Professional Cricket League (PCL) is set to bowl off in November of this year. In the meantime a review By Vanroy Burnes A total of twenty (20) teams from businesses around the country will contest the 2016/17 Ministry of Sports and Cool & Smooth sponsored business league football. The WIOC, back to back has been done on the past two seasons and the most outstanding players were identified. In 2015/16 L. Johnson of Guyana scored the most runs of 807 inclusive of 2 centuries and 5 half centuries. D. Smith of Windward Islands had 719 inclusive of 2 centuries and 6 half centuries. V.A Singh of Guyana scored 712 inclusive of 3 centuries and 2 half centuries. R.L. Chase of Barbados had 710 inclusive of 1 century and 6 half centuries and K. Brathwaite of Barbados hit 676 inclusive of 3 centuries and 2 half centuries. In 2015/16 the top seamers and most wicket takers were M. Cummings champions over the past two years, will be aiming for their third title in a row, but will have to fend off 19 more teams to include Teco Lake PWD Stars, Stingray City Wranglers, Green Acres, Pine Hill Island Provision, Kennedy’s Blue Diamonds PWD Asphalt and DIGICEL. The other teams are National Parks, Little Canton Immigration, Antigua & Barbuda Airport Authority, Antigua & Barbuda Transport Board, St James Club, St Johns Development, of Barbados with 33 for 683 runs, K.A. Stoute of Barbados with 26 for 421 runs, A.S. Joseph of Leeward Islands with 24 for 504 runs, R.A. Reifer of Barbados with 22 for 602 runs and G. Tonge of the Leeward Islands with 19 for 694 runs. In 2015/16 the top spinners and most wicket were N. Miller of Jamaica 65 for 1097 runs, R. Cornwall of Leeward Islands 48 for 1085 runs, I. Khan of Trinidad & Tobago 44 for 1237 runs, M.O. Kanhai of Guyana 40 for 540 runs and V. Permaul of Guyana 4o for 751 runs. The fans can look forward to see the return of the champion thoroughbred horse yet to be beaten after six outings and who has won both legs of this year’s Triple Crown series, but had to miss the final leg due to injury. This horse is none other than Lynn’s Image. However, Lynn’s image will be bombarded by Demolition Man the only horse to have won all legs of the Triple Crown Series, U Better Believe It, another sensational import, which was injured after its first outing, but is back with a bang; and to top it off in the feature race will be the new running sensation and lighting speedste r Chief of Staff that buzzed the garden after its first race. There will be other runners who will be aiming to make their names at the garden, so the stage is set for some excited races with the gates at the gardens opening at 12.noon on Sunday October 9th and the first race shoots off at 2.30 pm. However a Soccer-rama got underway on 17 TH September at the Radio Range field where 18 of the 20 teams registered took part. There was a brief opening ceremony with Assistant Director of Sport Evans Jones giving the welcome remarks along with a representative of the sponsor. Senator Colin James also gave brief remarks before declaring the season open. The Soccer-rama will conclude this Saturday.
