Happy October Holualoa Family! The school year is off to a great start!
Teachers and students :
There are many exciting happenings to share such as:

Holualoa School is continuing in the second year of
implementing the Success For All reading program.
Holualoa School continues to learn and teach the National
Common Core Standards of Math using “GO! Math” as the
chosen curriculum.
Holualoa School continues to offer a number of enrichment
resources to their students. These resources include Gardening,
Hawaiian Studies, Library, Computer classes, and Physical
Education.
Students are continuing the “Rock the walk” initiative as the
school has made a concentrated effort to make sure that all
students “safely” walk as they go to recess, lunch and back to
classes.
Student Drop Off Reminder
Holualoa staff continues to value the safety of our
students as a top priority. Please drop your child
off for school at the south end of Holualoa School
by the cafeteria after 7 am. Please do not drop
children off in the parking lots at the north end of
the school. This is so that our students can have
supervision during the hazardous morning traffic.
As always, thank you for driving with Aloha,
patience, and consideration for all of all the
children and adults here in the Holualoa Ohana.

Parent Teacher Conferences
Please don’t forget to return your parent teacher conference forms
to your child’s teacher. This is so that your child’s teacher can schedule
a parent teacher conference for you. Parent teacher conferences will
be scheduled after school from October 31 through November 9 th .
School will end at 1:08 on those days. Your child’s teacher may discuss
your child’s progress with you, as well as goals for the year. Mahalo!
Fund Run
Our students are excited that our annual “FUND RUN” is coming up on
November 4. Please continue to monitor your child as they collect funds for
Holualoa School books, supplies, materials, and field trips. More
information is forthcoming. If you would like to help, we would appreciate
it!
Continuous School Improvement Plan (WASC)
Holualoa School is busy working on a report for accreditation from the Western Association of Schools
and Colleges (WASC). The accreditation process is an ongoing, perpetual cycle. This cycle includes
assessment, planning, implementing, monitoring, and reassessment. The WASC accreditation process is
guided and assisted by self-study, visits, and follow-ups.
Our self-study is done in Home Groups, or grade level and Focus Groups. These groups were made by
teachers and staff who had interest in one of the 5 topics: Mission, Vision, and Leadership; Instruction;
Curriculum; Data and Assessment; and School Culture.
Our visit from the WASC administrators will take place in March. A team of 5 people will examine the
Holualoa School self-study. They will also look at our school to help us reflect further on where we are as a
school, where we want to be, and how we are going to get there. The follow-up piece is the school’s plan to
institute or alter existing programs and processes.
Families of Holualoa Elementary are encouraged to take part in this process. When a survey comes
home, please take the time to fill it out and return it. We are going to try something new this year and open
the computer lab during the Parent-Teacher Conferences. This is so that a new online survey can be
accessed. Thank you for supporting our school improvement plan in this way!
If you would like to get more involved in some of the discussions, please contact Linda Boranian,
Self-Study Coordinator by e-mailing her at linda_boranian@holualoa.k12.hi.us. Mahalo!
