and then ... back to JOHN RUTHERFORD (senior), also from cousin James, and possibly the clincher that John (senior)’s second wife, Margaret Rutherford (nee McClelland), was not ‘the wife the 3 stepsons did not get on with’, or the stepmother they ‘fled from’ as Ian has implied: ‘The census image here is the only record of the family that I have been able to locate – it records the three brothers, living with their widowed stepmother in Milngavie, 1901. Notes from cousin James Rutherford’s research (2011): 1. This is the only John Rutherford in both the 1861 & 1871 censuses whose occupation description includes the word ‘paper’. There are two in the 1881 census, neither of whom matches this John Rutherford – both are married, neither of them to an Elizabeth. 2. I cannot find this John Rutherford in any census after 1871, and no John Rutherford born 1843 -1848 died in Scotland between 1871 & 1881. (There is a John Rutherford, born 1846 Glencorse, recorded in both 1891 & 1901 censuses, in the Lunatic Asylum in Lasswade, Midlothian. His Death Register entry (1919, in the Asylum), however, records his parents as Archibald & Janet Rutherford.) 3. I cannot find any record of the birth of either of Marion’s children (under either of their recorded surnames), though they are recorded as her son & daughter in three consecutive censuses. Marion is recorded as unmarried in three censuses, and as widowed in one. 11 4. I cannot find a record of the birth of Marion Rutherford, but the 1851 census records Margaret senior as her sister, born Temple, Midlothian, and unmarried. 5. I cannot find either John or Marion Rutherford senior in either the 1841 or 1851 census. 6. I cannot find Marion junior in the 1901 census; nor can I find any record of her death or marriage after 1891. 7. I cannot find a record of the birth of John Rutherford senior in the parish of Currie, though there is a Marion Waldie born in Penicuik in 1782 who is tentatively identified with the Marion Waldie above. She would have been about 37 at the time of her marriage, and about 59 by the time of the 1841 census. OCTOBER 2016
