Summary from James Rutherford research (2011): ‘As there rather a lot of negative searches listed above, it’s well to detail the hypothesis which they were designed – and failed – to disprove.This is simply that the JOHN RUTHERFORD (senior), having, by the mid-1870s, probably twenty years experience working in a paper mill, travelled to Ballymoney, Ireland, for work in the paper mill at Clough Mills (?) [more probably the textile mill at Balnamore?]. There he met & married Elizabeth Beckett, with whom he had three surviving sons before she died, sometime after 1888. John married Maggie, and then himself died, leaving Maggie with the boys, who all moved to Milngavie, again for work in a paper mill (Ellangowan), before 1901. Marion, John’s mother, perhaps moved to be with him in Ballymoney after 1891, and died there. Although this hypothesis is not disproved, it is by no means yet proven – records from Ireland will probably be required before that is achieved.’ JOHN RUTHERFORD AND HIS CON-FLAB-E-DAB-E-DOZIE FAMILY TREE
My mischievous interpretation of James’ research on our ‘Rutherford’ ancestry ‘I have Marion Rutherford (single parent) as being our great-great-grandmother, and her son, John (Pickie) Rutherford, our great-grandfather, was actually named ‘John Pickie’ in 1851 census ... which could have meant that all of us ‘glorious Rutherfords’ decended from him might have had to run the gauntlet at school with the nickname ‘nose-pickie’ ... wonderful stuff!’ See census images over page.
