Re-new
Picture the scene: white sandy beach, rolling waves,
sitting in a hammock swinging with the gentle warm
breeze. Then your beautiful image is shattered by such
holiday gems as, “Are we there yet?” or “I thought you
packed it!”
We have made it again to the time of year when we can
enjoy the sunshine, spend time with friends in the garden,
and play in the park with Sunday afternoon ice
creams. From time to time, even the wonderful bodies
and minds God has given us need renewing. We look
forward to our summer break as time away from our
busy daily routine; to recharge our batteries, both
physically and mentally.
In today’s small world the travel options are startling.
From camping in Cleethorpes to backpacking in Borneo,
almost anything is possible – but our more exotic travel ideas can require a bit more
preparation. By planning ahead, we can help make our holiday run smoothly and
truly be the relaxing break we were hoping for. Top holiday tips for looking after
yourself include:
• Holiday insurance is vital for any holiday abroad. Some companies offer
whole-year insurance for any number of holidays.
• Take lots of suntan lotion, at least SP Factor 25 and apply liberally &
regularly – every hour as necessary, especially after swimming. Try to stay out
of the sun between 11am-3pm, when the rays are at their strongest. Snorkelling
is a particularly dangerous activity for getting sunburnt; wear a T-shirt!
• Protect children at all times, they should always wear a hat and T-shirt and
cover them with high factor sunblock (30-50)
• If you do get sunburnt, the key is to replace the lost skin moisture. Use
generous amounts of aftersun or similar skin moisturiser.
• If your holiday is in Europe, make sure you have an up-to-date E111 form filled
in and stamped to ensure there are no problems getting healthcare if you need
it. All Post Offices will have one.
• Holidays in Asia or Africa will often need immunisations (eg yellow fever,
hepatitis A, typhoid) or malaria prevention tablets. Get advice from your GP
surgery or the Department of Health website, leaving plenty of time to get these
arranged.
• For longer flights (>4 hours) there is increasing concern about the risk of deep
vein thrombosis (DVT). You can reduce your risk by drinking plenty of fluids
(not alcohol!) and taking regular walks on the plane. A recent trial showed elasticated
medical stockings make DVT 20 times less likely.
