Re-fresh
Welcome to the summer edition of Impact - the
community magazine of St Chad’s Church.
Re-fresh is the theme as we consider the
opportunities that summer gives us to re-lax and
re-charge our batteries, perhaps by going on
holiday, or enjoying the outdoors more. As we
planned this edition, we had a lot of fun brainstorming
words prefixed with re ... words which summarise many people’s hopes
for summer. This is what we came up with:
re-think Solicitor Jacqueline Bone, shares how a number of life-changing
moments, including deciding to follow Jesus Christ have influenced
her thinking.
re-new
re-view
re-cipe
re-flect
re-store
re-vive
Practical tips from Rob & Esther Corker on how you and your family
can look after your bodies when on holiday.
Many of us like to read when away. Chris Laude tells of a significant
book that helped her review her life and priorities.
A little contrived this title but what better way to relax in the garden
than with this summer recipe from our regular gourmet.
Words of ancient wisdom are applied to contemporary life
through a reflections on Psalm 23.
Often we go on holiday with loved ones. Ruth Iantorno shares
personally about the need to relax to refresh & restore relationships.
Matthew Porter writes about refreshment not just for the individual,
but for the wider community.
re-create Our resident gardener (Son of the Soil) gives some tips on seed
collecting and preparation for next season.
re-spond Steve Winks describes the unique atmosphere of the Make Poverty
History rally in Edinburgh and suggests the developed countries
must respond.
We considered many other re words, but we hope these are sufficient to inspire
you to be re-freshed during these lovely summer weeks.
Happy summer!
Re-think
Births, marriages and deaths are the
classic and often-quoted events which
cause people to stop and reflect on
their busy and demanding lives. I’m
quite sure, however, that there are
plenty of other times in people’s lives
when they pause for thought and
wonder about the meaning and
purpose of their lives. Perhaps balmy
summers’ evenings in the garden,
dramatic thunderstorms, weekends
away by the sea or more extended
holidays abroad prompt this kind of
reflection. I wonder how often, though,
the reflection leads to a radical rethinking.
How often are we prepared to give
our lives an overhaul when we feel they
need it – or even just a mild tweaking
round the edges?
For me, this
year, the event
which caused
me to stop and
rethink was one
of those classic
ones – our baby
daughter Laura
was born in early March 2005 and is
now nearly 4 months old. Life has
changed beyond all recognition. Obviously
in a practical sense, the way I
spend my time has altered dramatically
: rather than getting up early in the
morning to go out to work and getting
that “Friday feeling” at the end of the
week, I now work all night and enjoy
Monday mornings just as much as any
other day(!!). Perhaps more fundamentally,
however, the things I think about
and my priorities for the days and
weeks ahead have altered. Things I
once considered important, perhaps
even crucial, to my existence are no
longer so crucial and, more shockingly
for me, things I snubbed, derided and
mocked ( like mother and toddler
groups!!) I have seen in a whole new
light.
It reminds me very much of the time
when, about 5 years ago, I first properly
delved into the bible, walked into a
church and started to rethink my views
on Christianity and Jesus Christ. I had
most certainly snubbed, derided and
mocked Christianity and Christians and
was pretty sure that I would never be
joining that particular “club”.
It came as something of a shock to
discover the utter passion and
compassion of the Jesus of the New
Testament and the truth and beauty of
much of the Old Testament. Added to
that the faith, humour and joy for life
that I encountered amongst many of
the people I met at church, and I was
thoroughly “converted”. I am now a
regular attender at St Chad’s both on a
Sunday and also at a midweek home
group where themes of justice and
poverty are explored and practical
action taken.
Having now a child to care for and bring
up has made me look again at my
values and priorities and how my faith
does, or perhaps, should, affect those.
It has made me think about what is so
fundamental to my life that, if I did not
pass those fundamentals on to my
daughter, I would feel I had neglected
my duties. Already Laura is watching
my every move, listening to my voice
and reacting to what my eyes are
showing Fairly soon she will start to
copy expressions I have and sounds I
make. At some point in the future,
probably sooner than I expect or am
prepared for, she will start talking and
asking questions and wanting answers.
Some if it ( I hope ) will be easy stuff to
answer ……Mum, why can’t I have
chocolate at every meal ?….. – but
some of it will be life’s big what’s, how’s
and why’s. I don’t expect for a minute to
be able to give satisfactory answers to
all her questions but I would at least
like to share with her my faith in the
great big God of the bible and to pass
on his values and priorities which I
attempt to make my own.
I recently read this, found towards the
end of the book of Micah in the Old
Testament :
“ And what does the Lord require of
you?
“To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God “
It really struck a chord with me. What
better set of values could I hope to
pass on?
Re-new
Picture the scene: white sandy beach, rolling waves,
sitting in a hammock swinging with the gentle warm
breeze. Then your beautiful image is shattered by such
holiday gems as, “Are we there yet?” or “I thought you
packed it!”
We have made it again to the time of year when we can
enjoy the sunshine, spend time with friends in the garden,
and play in the park with Sunday afternoon ice
creams. From time to time, even the wonderful bodies
and minds God has given us need renewing. We look
forward to our summer break as time away from our
busy daily routine; to recharge our batteries, both
physically and mentally.
In today’s small world the travel options are startling.
From camping in Cleethorpes to backpacking in Borneo,
almost anything is possible – but our more exotic travel ideas can require a bit more
preparation. By planning ahead, we can help make our holiday run smoothly and
truly be the relaxing break we were hoping for. Top holiday tips for looking after
yourself include:
• Holiday insurance is vital for any holiday abroad. Some companies offer
whole-year insurance for any number of holidays.
• Take lots of suntan lotion, at least SP Factor 25 and apply liberally &
regularly – every hour as necessary, especially after swimming. Try to stay out
of the sun between 11am-3pm, when the rays are at their strongest. Snorkelling
is a particularly dangerous activity for getting sunburnt; wear a T-shirt!
• Protect children at all times, they should always wear a hat and T-shirt and
cover them with high factor sunblock (30-50)
• If you do get sunburnt, the key is to replace the lost skin moisture. Use
generous amounts of aftersun or similar skin moisturiser.
• If your holiday is in Europe, make sure you have an up-to-date E111 form filled
in and stamped to ensure there are no problems getting healthcare if you need
it. All Post Offices will have one.
• Holidays in Asia or Africa will often need immunisations (eg yellow fever,
hepatitis A, typhoid) or malaria prevention tablets. Get advice from your GP
surgery or the Department of Health website, leaving plenty of time to get these
arranged.
• For longer flights (>4 hours) there is increasing concern about the risk of deep
vein thrombosis (DVT). You can reduce your risk by drinking plenty of fluids
(not alcohol!) and taking regular walks on the plane. A recent trial showed elasticated
medical stockings make DVT 20 times less likely.
Tel: (0114) 274 5086 Page 8 web site: stchads.org

• If there is a risk of diarrhoea then take loperamide tablets and dioralyte rehydation
sachets for symptomatic relief. However, if you develop a high fever or
bloody diarrhoea then you must seek medical attention, since you may need
antibiotics.
• Protect yourself against insect bites by covering up at night. There are preventative
sprays and soothing treatments available, and it may be a good
idea to take a mosquito net for high-risk areas.
• Drink only bottled water to reduce the risk of stomach upsets. If in any doubt,
avoid ice in drinks and be careful of salads that may have been washed in
local tap water.
Always contact your local GP or dept of health for the latest up to date travel advice.
Originally, ‘Holy Days’ were religious festivals, when people were given time off
work. In the modern sense ‘holidays’ also give us an opportunity to explore our
spiritual side, which may be neglected amidst work/family life. Lots of people visit
churches whilst away to appreciate their beauty and tranquillity. We may find ourselves
considering what we are doing in our lives, what we want to achieve and how
we can change things. We can also renew our relationships, perhaps reconnecting
with a spouse or children, finding out what is important in their lives and spending
some quality time with them.
As the water laps the shore, the mountain stands majestically before us, or the sun
sets over the horizon, we breathe a little slower and reflect that we are a small part
of a beautifully realised world. Moments like these can truly awaken the soul, but the
people we share it with matters just as much - we will all have fond memories of the
traditional wet British holiday!
So let us make use of the time we have to prepare, so that we can enjoy every moment
of our holiday. We all need physical, emotional and spiritual renewal; to renovate,
revive, invigorate and begin again.
The Purpose Driven Life:
What on earth am I here for?
Author: Rick Warren
Zondervan. Price £8.99 or less
ISBN: 0-310-21074-7
Re-view
What on earth am I here for?" Have you ever wondered
that? If, like most people, you have, I suggest that you
read a book which I have just finished. It's called "The
Purpose Driven Life" and has my opening question as its
sub-title.
There are 40 short chapters, each one being no longer
than 5 or 6 sides of a paper-back page, and the author
suggests that you read only one chapter each day, so it's
not a lot to read at once. At the end of each chapter are
three things - a point to ponder, a verse to remember and
a question to consider. On the back cover, the author,
Rick Warren, claims "This book will help you understand
why you are alive and God's amazing plan for you. Knowing
God's purpose for creating you will reduce your stress,
focus your energy, simplify your decisions, give meaning
to your life, and, most important, prepare you for eternity".
Oh yes! I thought sceptically. Then I read further on and discovered that Rick
Warren is the founding pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, one
of America's largest and best known churches. Oh no! I thought - it's going to be
one of those ghastly American books! However, I began to read the opening page -
"Getting the most from this book". It intrigued me, so I sat down with a cup of coffee
and read the first chapter. It captured my imagination - the words were plain and
simple, and I didn't feel patronised or "preached at". I soon found myself reading
the next chapter which began, "You are not an accident. Your birth was no mistake
or mishap, and your life is no fluke of nature.” I wanted to read more, but I
remembered that the advice was to read only one chapter a day - so I reluctantly
closed the book and had to wait until the next day before I could begin reading
again. By the time I had read the third chapter, I was hooked.
I became a Christian in 1991 when I was baptised, at the age of 46. Since then, I
have experienced joy and sorrow, as we all do. The death of my daughter in 1993,
at the age of 24, was a time of great testing of my new faith. I knew God was with
me, and with Rachel too, but it has been difficult sometimes to understand exactly
why certain events have happened in my life. Having read this book, I now not only
understand, but I can feel the understanding in my heart and mind, if that makes
sense to you.
I do recommend this book to you - you can buy it at any bookshop. This summer, if
it's sunny, why don't you sit in the garden, put your feet up, relax and read. Or curl
up in an arm chair, or make yourself comfortable in bed - anywhere you can feel relaxed.
Do resist the temptation to read more than one chapter at a time, so that you
can really take it in and ponder. I hope that this book will help you to re-view your
life. If it doesn't, I'll be very surprised!
Summer Pudding
The weather was certainly mixed during
the first two weeks of July and as I write
this I have one eye of the washing and
the clouds. Still, just as I hope that the
2012 Olympics will bring lasting
benefits, I hope that the report of an
August heat-wave proves correct.
Just in case, here is a recipe for a
wonderfully refreshing puddings which
is easy to make and doesn’t have too
many calories!
INGREDIENTS:
• 500g (1lb) mixed redcurrents, blackcurrents and
blackberries
• 125g (4oz) Caster sugar
• 250g (8oz) raspberries
• 8 slices of white bread (crusts removed)
• Cream
DIRECTIONS:
1. Place the currants and blackberries in a heavy pan with the sugar. Cook gently,
stirring occasionally, for 10 to 15 minutes until tender.
2. Add the raspberries and leave to cool. Strain the fruit, reserving the juice.
3. Cut 3 circles of bread the same diameter as a 900 ml (11/2 pint) pudding
basin. Shape the remaining bread to fit round the sides of the basin. Soak
all the bread in the reserved fruit juice.
4. Line the bottom of the basin with one of the circles, then arrange the
shaped bread around the sides. Pour in half the fruit and place another
circle of bread on top. Cover with the remaining fruit, then top with the remaining
bread circle.
"I think the answer lies in the soil." I will start this piece with a
question - Whose little catchphrase was this? on the Radio in the
sixties (Answer at the end!)
Well, the answer indeed does lie in the soil, the answer to the
question as to why some people seem to be able to grow
beautiful flowers and vegetables and others seem to struggle. I
am not a soil expert, but there is a lot of the truth in the saying
"You get out of it what you put in," With this in mind, it is obvious
that a gardener needs to enrich the soil with compost, manure
and (for those who ignore the organic route) some fertiliser.
Some real enthusiasts use a kit to test the acid/alkali level in the soil, to ensure that
it suits the type of plant they wish to grow. I use a lot of guesswork! I know that
certain vegetables, including beans, like nitrogen, so I will dig in lots of compost
containing rotted down grass cuttings. In fact I have a large heap of compost waiting
to be moved, and I plan to do that in the Autumn.
This is the time of year when a gardener will be busy watering and harvesting. I
have just managed, after a late start, to plant beans and courgettes, and am busy
watering them in. Luckily, although I have given them no help at all, the strawberries
and raspberries are in abundance.
At this time, however, a gardener, also
needs to start planning for
next year (especially one like me,
who has done very little).
This is time for thinking ahead
to next Spring and building
up to that time with digging,
adding nutrients and possibly
choosing which seeds to retain. They say that the
vegetable garden should
be dug over before Christmas,
allowing the frosts to break
up the soil and the additives to be
assimilated. So, as well as reaping the rewards, you need to be thinking ahead.
If we want our planting to bear fruit, whether it is to provide nourishment, beauty or
the seeds for the next planting, they must nurtured and cared for. With the right
attention the cycle continues - Planting, Nurture, Enjoyment and Re-creation!
And think of the exercise, the relief of stress. The other day, I did three hours work
on the allotment, listening to Radio 4 and I thought - What bliss!
And so to the answer to the question - it was of course that well known gardening
pundit, Arthur Fallowfield (in real life Kenneth Williams, in the radio programme
Round the Horne). As he said - "I think the answer lies in the soil"
Re-vive
We are not meant to live in isolation. We are made to live with others.
When the passengers on board the flights heading for the World Trade Centre
disaster knew they were heading for destruction, many phones their families
and loved ones. That’s who we want around us when life draws to a close.
Most of us don’t want to be on our own. Why? That is how we were made.
You may find yourself lying on beach somewhere warm this summer, or perhaps
enjoying a walk or a lovely sunset away from home. But holidays come to
an end, and we come back home - to our families and to our neighbourhood.
Our community is where we live out our lives, where we bring up our families,
where we build friendships and root ourselves. The kind of community we live
in is therefore crucial for the quality of our lives. That’s why the last two edition’s
of Impact have included sections challenging us to consider what qualities
we want to see in our community.
I wonder if you’ve ever considered what God thinks about this subject? The bible
is full of divine wisdom on this subject - advice left for our benefit. For instance,
Jesus made it clear that he loves to communicate love to the poor; heal
the broken-hearted; set free those bound by addiction and abuse; release those
imprisoned by the darkness of poor choices (Luke 4). This manifesto of caring
for the marginalised has always been the mark of caring communities and is
something we need to see more of in our area.
If we’re honest, many of us find it is easy to see Jesus’ words applying to
others, but not to ourselves. The bible is clear, however, that we should always
examine ourselves before putting the spot-light on others. That means we need
to ask how we are poor, broken-hearted, addicted and imprisoned. We in the
west are materially rich and yet are often morally, emotionally and spiritually
poor, compared with others. Our lives and relationships - with others, and God -
are often deficient and purpose-less. What’s the answer?
The answer is re-vival. Revival is when the flow of God’s life does not remain
just with one person, one family or one church, but bursts out into the wider
community. Historically there are many examples of this happening - both in
this country and in others. The results are often startling, with neighbourliness
increasing, relationships improving, crime decreasing, addictions being beaten
and churches filling, as people discover in Christ purpose, meaning and
direction in life.
‘Revive us, O Lord’ is a wonderful prayer for the community. ‘Revive us’.
‘Revive me’.
Re-store
Holidays - do you have a
favourite place you love
to go?
For our family, this is St
Agnes in Cornwall. We
stay in our old trailer tent
at a small campsite on a
working farm outside the
village.
The view that welcomes
you of the long stretch of
cliffs, coves and sandy
beaches is well worth the
long journey. Most evenings we stroll down to the old tin mine, perched on a
west-facing cliff and wait in anticipation to catch the fading rays of the sun,
hoping for a spectacular sunset. At night we can hear the sounds of the
ocean, the surf of the Atlantic, crashing onto the cliffs below St Agnes
beacon. When we wake up, if the sun is shining, we head for the nearby
cove, relaxing on a sandy beach, exploring the caves, walking on the cliffs
or the exhilaration of body boarding. There is something for everyone,
whatever your age.
This paints an idyllic picture of our holiday but in truth it’s not always like
this. Sometimes it’s misty, grey and raining and hard to find things that
everyone wants to do. Sometimes living in a field under canvas without all
the comforts of home seems like hard work! But still we keep coming back.
Why?
At a practical level, the reason we return
is because our trailer tent is too old to
make the journey back to Sheffield and
after our holiday we pack it away and
store it in a barn on the farm. But there is
also something very special about the
time we spend with family and friends in
St Agnes that draws us back.
Certainly it’s the opportunity to relax and to enjoy the moment in a beautiful
setting that seems so far away from the pressures of our busy lives back
home. More recently I have re-discovered that the priceless value of our
holiday is the opportunity it gives to refresh and restore relationships that
may have become neglected or taken for granted through the distractions of
life’s worries and concerns.
This summer is a special one for our family as my daughter who was so very
ill last year is enjoying a return to good health. To celebrate this, I have
spent a wonderful few days with Anna in Venice and it would be hard to find
a more perfect place for a short break. However, what was most precious
and of lasting value was spending time with my daughter, doing what we
enjoy doing, relaxing and shopping, and through this strengthening our
relationship.
We can never know what the future will bring and what strength may be
needed to get us through life’s ups and downs. So, this summer, if you are
going on holiday, or staying at home, I wish you all some time to relax and to
focus on what and who is important in your life.
Re-spond
If you have ever been in a
crowd of 225,000 people and
experienced total silence
then you will understand
how we felt in Edinburgh for
the Make Poverty History rally.
We went to make our voices
heard and make sure that leaders
from the eight most developed
nations, the G8, understood
the depth of feeling that people
of this country have for people
who are dying because of poverty,
debt and unjust trade in Africa.
The minutes silence was broken only by the police helicopter overhead. The
"Minute Of Noise For Africa" which followed was just as profound and just as moving.
If you want to sample it for yourself you can visit the Make Poverty History website,
www.makepovertyhistory.org
The day had started early when we caught the coach at ten minutes past five in the
morning from outside Woodseats Library. The coach was full of people from St
Chads, Our Lady and St Thomas and Beauchief Baptist churches as well as people
from churches in Dronfield. The journey there was uneventful and the organisation
was excellent. I have never been given a police escort before but we were picked
up by the police in Edinburgh! and transported to our parking place which was just a
few minutes walk from the centre. We then walked to The Meadows where we
enjoyed live music, speakers, stalls and fun events. There were so many people
there that we had to queue for three hours just to get to the start of the walk. When
we did the people of Edinburgh made us most welcome. They were hanging out of
their windows, waving flags and offering us drinks of water. It was good to be carrying
the banner which we had made specially for the event, even though our banner
was yellow instead of regulation white, ah well, never mind. People who would have
liked to have gone but could not had signed the banner and we carried their
thoughts and prayers with us. We were all dressed in white so that we could make a
white band of people which surrounded Edinburgh. We hopefully got across our
message that we care about people in other countries whom we have never met
and would never meet and that we could demonstrate in a family friendly way without
causing unnecessary disturbance. Hopefully the message will get across that
what we do has a profound effect on people across the world for good and bad. We
now live in a global village and what we do impacts on people across the other side
of the world whether it be unjust trade, pollution or management of resources. If we
in the developed world cannot help our neighbours then who can?
July 1925
MY DEAR FRIENDS,
July is our anniversary month,
St Chad’s Church having been
consecrated on St James Day,
25th July 1912. This therefore
is our 13th anniversary and I
think we should prove the prejudice against
‘13’ to be entirely wrong, by making this
celebration a uniquely successful one.
St Chad’s short story holds much to be proud
of. If this year sees our Hall built and paid
for, it will prove a memorable year.
For the Garden Party on 25th there is an
excellent programme arranged. During the
holiday months I hope that those going from
home will be much refreshed by the change
and that those at home will “hold the fort”
by making special efforts to be present at the
various services.
August 1925
MY DEAR FRIENDS,
I shall be away throughout August, after the
5th, and should my personal services be required
at any time, my address may be had
from the Churchwardens, or at the vicarage.
Our 13th Anniversary has passed off with
great success. The brilliant sunshine made
everyone happy at the Garden Party. Mt
Davidson had a large audience at the opening
and in his remarks struck a very deep
note speaking of the work for which the
church stands today. His urbanity and kindliness
came also into full play.
At the services on Sunday, Rev. W. A. Fanshaw
and Rev. S. Snell brought a heartsearching
and helpful message to us.
Our deepest thanks are due to all who helped
to render the Anniversary so noteworthy.
