We like to compartmentalise life. So we have a part of ourselves that is about work; another about relationships and family life; then bits to do with finances; sport; health; holidays; maybe a God or spirituality section; etc; etc, etc.. But to live like that is not satisfying - there is no joined-up thinking, and in reality all these areas overlap as they blend into one and make you and me whole people. The question is, is there one thing that unites them all - that brings a coherence and unity? The follower of Jesus sees their faith/ spirituality as that which brings shape and unity to the whole. So a mature spirituality is about faith positively influencing every area of life. We are given a very helpful and practical example of this in the bible. St Paul, in Ephesians 4:11-16 writes to new Christians about his desire for them to ‘become mature’ (v.13). He then gives six examples of what this would look like, and these six things still ring true today: 1. STABILITY - the spiritually mature are ‘not blown here and there by every wave’ (v.14) of the latest fads, philosophies or novelties; instead they are stable in life and faith. 2. SPEECH - the mature are those who ‘speak the truth’ (v.15), that is, they are not afraid to speak up for what is right and wrong; they have clear values which are not just personal but are to be shared. 3. ACTIONS - as they speak the truth they do so ‘in love’ (v.15). All their actions have love as the root and the S aim, and so even if they speak critically, it is kind, compassionate and caring, demonstrated in actions of love. 4. CHRIST - the mature ‘grow up into Christ’ (v.15) which means that Jesus Christ is the no.1 role-model and there is a sense of being almost subsumed by him and his cause. This is a life-time progress of growing. To think one has ‘made it’ displays an immature attitude. 5. UNITY - the mature recognise that they are part of a ‘body, joined and held together’ (v.16), which is a picture of belonging to others and not living just for ourselves. It reminds us that we are better together than apart, and that corporate groups like family, church, community and society are important. 6. INDIVIDUAL - whilst recognising our need for corporate identity, we all have our own part to play in life. God calls and equips each one, as we trust him, so we can ‘each do our work’ The bible is full of helpful and wise insight for life. This idea of joined-up spiritual maturity is important if we are to live life to the full. Why not get out a bible, and have a look at these verses in Ephesians 4. They offer wisdom for a mature life.
