Maturing Year
As the year moves into its final quarter so we begin to
look to the end of another year. We cannot change the
past - what has been, has been. But we can change
the present and the future. And so if for you, this year
has not been a particularly good one, why don’t you
work and pray for this final part of the year to be the
best part — that the year would mature well for you?
This raises the question of maturity and maturing, which is partly addressed in this
edition of Impact. What do we mean when we use those words?
Maturity
When Impact’s editorial team brain-stormed about this edition and the idea of
‘maturity’ seemed to be emerging, it raised all sorts of issues. Is maturing just about
something being old and worn out - like a mature dandelion that, once its seeds are
blown away, is pretty much useless and just taking up space? But then what about
a mature wine, or cheese? This is when something is at its best ... its peak … its
most palatable. We use the word of animals too, don’t we? A mature stag - strong,
majestic, virile. Then there are mature fruit or crops, ready for harvesting, and
mature investments, ready to cash in.
Mature People
What about mature people? We sometimes use the word as a way of being polite
about the elderly, and that may well be a right and proper use of the word. But
when we talked it through, we all came to the conclusion that a mature person is not
necessarily old. In fact we decided that it didn’t necessarily have anything to do with
age. It was more about attitude, disposition, and learning from life experience. It
was more to do with wisdom than anything else.
Wise Role Models
Mature people. Wise people. Where are they? Who are they? We need those
people. In the bible they are sometimes called ’the fathers’ or ‘the elders’ although,
as we recognised, this has little or nothing to do with age. Recognising our need for
role-models, the bible tells us to respect and learn from these mature people, for we
need their wisdom. The bible also tells us that there may be times when there are
not so many of them, and that we need to seek them out and spend time with them.
What wise advise.
Impact
This edition of Impact looks at maturity and we hope you find it informative and food
for thought. We value your comments on the magazine and on any aspect of St
Chad’s Church, as we aim to serve the community effectively.
The Best Way To Pray
A priest, a minister and a charismatic sat discussing
the best positions for prayer, while a telephone
repairman worked nearby.
"Kneeling is definitely the best way to pray," the
priest said.
"No," said the minister. "I get the best results
standing with my hands outstretched to Heaven."
"You're both wrong," the charismatic said. "The most
effective prayer position is lying down on the floor."
The repairman could contain himself no longer.
"Hey, fellas," he interrupted. "The best praying I
ever did was when I was hanging upside down from
a telegraph pole."
Rev’d Brown answers the
phone:
"Hello, is that Rev’d Brown?"
"It is"
This is the Inland Revenue.
Can you help us?"
"I can"
"Do you know a Ted Oliver?"
"I do"
"Is he a member of your
congregation?"
"He is"
"Did he donate £5,000 to
the church?"
"He will".
A vicar and his
curate from the
local church are
standing by the
road knocking a
sign into the
ground, that
reads:
The End is Near!
Turn Yourself Around
Before it's Too Late!
A car speeds past them, and the occupants
yell obscenities at the pair. From the curb
they hear screeching tyres and a big splash.
The vicar turns to the curate and asks, "Do
you think the sign should just say 'Bridge
Out'?"
P ...
One of the best things about
gardening is that there is always
something to do. It would be really
boring if things went in the ground in the
first week in May and then were all
finished a month later. What ever would
we do for the next 11 months.
Of course nature has taken care of
that because each plant has a different
germination, growth and maturity rate. If
we did put them in all at the same time
they would mature at different times.
This is so that different plants get the
right conditions and mature and die
before a different crop needs the space
or light. For instance radishes germinate
and grow to an edible state in about two
weeks; on the other hand purple
sprouting broccoli takes almost a year to
mature and become edible – if the
pigeons don’t get to it first!
Some plants can cope with any type
of soil, others need a high lime content
whilst others need a low lime content.
Some need full sun, some need shade.
This year fruit has had a bumper year.
Apples, raspberries and loganberries
have all been fruiting at a record rate.
On the other hand the sweetcorn and
courgettes have been sitting and sulking
for ages and by the end of August were
only just looking like doing something.
The parsnips were sown at the right time
but have never put in an appearance. I
used to think that farmers were odd
because they always complained that
the weather was never right. This year I
know what they mean - the first half of
the year was too dry and we could not
keep up with the watering, then it rained
for weeks and weeks just when we
needed some.
People are the same - girls mature
before boys (If I am typical then maybe
boys never mature at all). Some families
have a genetic disposition towards
longevity, others don’t One of the
fascinating things in the last few years
has been watching my grandchildren
growing up - Thomas is five, Jamie is
nearly three and Jack is just two years of
age. It is amazing to watch them learn to
sit up, crawl, stand up, and eventually
walk. Speech development is fascinating
as well (in my time I have been gangad,
grandgrad, gandous and gandouse, not
to mention other versions of Grandad).
So, just like plants people grow and
mature at different rates but eventually
with the right conditions we each grow,
mature and become fruitful. We each
have a mixture of sunshine and rain in
our lives and each experience makes us
better, stronger and hopefully more
mature. I could continue the analogy a
bit further but that would mean talking
about weeds and also manure heaps,
so, I’d better leave it there before I start
talking myself into trouble!
When thinking of harvest time, many
people associate a field of ripening corn
with the scarlet poppy. But feelings
about the lore and meaning of plants
can run deep in many cases, not least
with regard to the symbolism of the
poppy.
In recent years this ‘flower of the field’
has suffered a rather bad press,
being associated with the
glorification of war and with,
mistakenly, the opium
poppy. Yet the scarlet
poppy's association
with death and new
life, and with corn and
harvest, is as old as
agriculture and maybe
as civilisation itself. It
is one of the world's
most successful ‘weeds’
and has followed and
exploited the spread of
farming across the globe so well
that no-one is sure of its native
home. It is a plant which belongs to
a way of life - to the tilling and
disturbance of soil and to the building,
and razing of communities. It is
therefore as happy growing on the
battlefield as in the cornfield.
Corn poppies probably reached
Britain mixed up with the seed corn of
the Neolithic settlers and, even then,
were soon regarded as ambivalent
symbols of fertility and death - the
blood-red petals cut down with the corn,
only to spring up again in numberless
quantities the following summer. Thus,
out of the obscene sea of mud and
broken bodies that stretched around
Ypres and the Somme in the First World
War, arose the sea of poppies,
seemingly coloured by blood but also
healing the land, that inspired the poem
"In Flanders Fields".
In Georgia, U.S.A. Moira Michael, a
worker with the Y.M.C.A., was so moved
by the poem, she vowed to wear a
poppy evermore and, in 1921, when the
British Legion was formed, she
approached them with
samples of artificial poppies
made by a friend. The
idea of a Poppy Day,
marking the
anniversary of the
Armistice, took off
immediately. That
year, on November
11, the British
Legion raised more
than £10,000 from
the sale of poppies.
Next time you go into St.
Chad's Church, look at the
middle window on the south
side. It depicts the Last Supper on one
side and, on the other, First World War
soldiers receiving Holy Communion on
the battlefield. As you contemplate the
window, remember the words written on
a grave in a foreign land - "When you go
home, tell them of us and say, for your
tomorrow, we gave out today".
Remember also the words of St. John
(ch.15. v.13) - "Greater love hath no
man than this, that he lay down his life
for his friends".
And, on Armistice Day, wear your
scarlet poppy with pride in
remembrance of those who lay down
their lives for their friends … because
isn't that what Jesus did?
Vicki Harris is a retired primary school teacher, still supply teaching
in a local school. Here she tells us a little of her experience...
The way children learn skills, acquire
knowledge and become responsible
citizens has always fascinated me — I
suppose that’s why I enjoy being a
teacher.
One minute they are coming into
school, some only four years old, with a
brand new uniform, book bag and P.E.
kit, and within a very few years they
become literate, numerate, join
orchestras, gain sporting prowess and
have an enviable grasp of all aspects of
technology.
If you ask any very young children
what they have done at school, they will
probably say, either, ‘I can’t remember’ or
‘I played all day’. Well, it’s probably true!
Children in reception classes learn best
through imaginative and manipulative
play. Teachers use water, sand, pebbles,
bubbles, fabrics, etc so that children learn
through sensory experience. Concepts
like shape, empty and full, light and
heavy, large and small, thick and thin can
all be assimilated. Will it float or sink?
How can we make this move?
Children draw and paint, mixing
colours and experimenting with pattern
and texture. They make models with
boxes, tubes and plastic containers.
They learn how to fasten things together
and how to use tools safely. With all
these activities comes the resultant
language as children present their
paintings or models and describe how
they were made in ‘show and tell’
sessions. While all this is taking place
other children are encouraged to listen in
an atmosphere of mutual respect.
Children’s attitudes are influenced by
feedback from others, whether from
adults or their peers. If a child learns to
be positive about their work, then they
are always eager to give more. As the
poem says: ‘If a child lives with
encouragement, he learns selfconfidence’.
There is always a ‘home corner’,
where through role play children learn to
interact with others. This might be a
kitchen, or a travel agents, a flower shop
or a doctor’s surgery. Children are
encouraged to handle money and give
change, write flower orders or
prescriptions and it is here that children,
learning through experience and
repetition, become part of the wider
community. As language develops and
the skills of reading and writing are
established, children mature towards
being independent. They soon learn
what tasks they must accomplish each
short session and develop a good work
ethic. They learn the skill of taking turns;
some learn how to speak up and some
learn when to be quiet! Those who came
into school unable to dress and undress
themselves soon learn independence by
imitating their friends and, of course, there
is nothing like the reward of a special
sticker badge to encourage the slow
mover.
Children soon learn a sense of social
justice and moral responsibility. As they
progress through school they take part in
‘Circle Time’ where they discuss world
issues such as poverty, famine and
homelessness. They use ideas and
information learned at home and in school
to share with each other how to care for
animals, how to make healthy choices of
food, how to keep themselves safe and
whom they can trust to help them. They
learn respect and appreciation for different
faiths and cultures and often we adults
can learn from the truthful and refreshing
ideas which children contribute.
In today’s primary schools we have
School Councils where each class elects
representatives to put forward their views
on school life. Children are encouraged to
play an active part in some of the
decisions which will affect them.
Our children are growing up in an
increasingly technological age; they are
immersed in it right from birth and use it
far more easily than many adults. How
many of you could manipulate text,
change font, size, and colour when you
were only four years old? Well most of
today’s children can! They access the
internet, find information and print it
without batting an eyelid. Children use
interactive whiteboards, videos and cds to
enable learning, but in all this there is still
always time for the stories which are read
to them every day in school.
Teaching over the years has changed
in many ways, but the way children learn
and grow is still the same miracle. We all
learn in many ways, either by watching,
listening or doing. We will all learn at
different speeds because we are
individuals. It is a fascinating process.
They say you know you are getting
older when the policemen look younger! –
Well the children I taught years ago are
now the policemen and women, and the
people who serve me in the local shops,
the hairdressers, the doctors and the
nurses, the plumbers, painters and
mechanics. The little girl who danced the
‘Sugar Plum Fairy’ now drives her own
car, the boy who loved playing with cars
now works in the pits at formula one
races, ‘Aladdin’ is off to university to study
the world of international finance and
management. My Olympic hopeful will
now not run like the wind for Britain but
will instead study psychology and
criminology, and the children who just
It has been, and I hope will continue to
be, a privilege to teach these children and
to watch them grow into maturity. It has
been a God given gift to be a small part of
their lives.
A …
"Age is something that doesn't matter - unless you're a cheese"
Billie Burke, actress, 1885 -1970
Did you know that people were making
cheese as long ago as 3,000 years before
the birth of Christ? Fragments of
decorative pictures found in the remains of
a Mesopotamian temple in present day
Iraq, show details of the method of
production. Perhaps it all started by
accident when people realised that milk
curdled if left too long in the heat of the
sun, and then they began to experiment.
Early man was a hunter, then he
became a herdsman looking after, and
rearing, goats in the beginning. Later on
he had flocks of sheep and eventually
herds of cows, so milk was available in
larger quantities. Each of the three
different milks have their own distinctive
flavour and each type of animal produces
very different quantities.
Sheep produce between 0.5 and one
litre of milk per day, goats between two
and five litres, whilst cows can give up to
30 litres each day - so it's understandable
that cheese made from sheep and goats'
milk is much more expensive that cows'
milk cheese.
The production of all kinds of cheese
begins in the same way - it is only in the
later stages that differences occur. To
make a traditional English hard cheese,
the milk is heated in vats in order to
destroy any unwanted bacteria, then
special cultures are added to aid the
ripening of the milk. Rennet is introduced
to thicken the milk which is then left to set
in a warm place. Once curds are starting
to form, the mixture is heated again to
begin the process of releasing the liquid
whey. When the curds start to sink in the
vats, the whey is poured off and the curds
are salted then put into moulds lined with
cheesecloth. The process of pressing
then begins, when the curds are
compacted and any remaining whey
released - the higher the pressure, the
more solid the cheese will be. The cheese
is then ready for drying - this takes place
in a cool, airy environment with the cheese
being rotated every day so that it dries out
evenly. Some cheeses are wrapped in
cheesecloth "bandages" for two to three
weeks, the cloth being replaced daily until
all the moisture has been extracted, whilst
others are sealed in a wax rind. Now
begins the last and perhaps the allimportant
stage in the whole production -
the maturing. A cheese which is tasteless
and bland when freshly made, becomes
full of flavour and body after a proper
ripening period - and this can take many
months.
So, whether you prefer your cheese
included in a cordon bleue recipe, or as an
accompaniment to a glass of port, or with
some pickle in a humble sandwich, pause
for a while and consider the journey the
cheese has made ... and then just enjoy
it!
John Mitchell runs Mitchell’s Wines in Meadowhead. Here he tells us about
his road to maturity as well as that of the business and a little about wine...
I can still remember my first day at
Abbey Lane School back in September
1955 hanging onto the railing for grim
death, tears rolling down my cheeks as my
mum tried to persuade me to go through
the school gates to start my education
programme. It took the head mistress – a
rather firm Miss Barton – to save the day
by promptly grabbing my hand and leading
me through rather swiftly.
Why did, or why should I go to school?
My mum and dad had a butcher’s shop at
the top of Meadowhead and I had spent
many happy hours there meeting and
greeting the good folk of Norton and
Meadowhead who were buying their
sausages, pies and pork chops. So what
had school got to offer me – not a lot! Six
years later I promptly failed my 11-plus
and headed up the road to Jordanthorpe
Secondary Modern, an all boys school
which, sadly, is being pulled down as I
write this.
I had now matured at age 11 with long
trousers and a Beatle hair cut –
Jordanthorpe was a school where you
grew up quick, not for the faint hearted,
with fair but firm teachers it was to be five
very enjoyable happy years for me. But as
the leaving date grew closer I had to make
a decision was it going to be the big wide
world or join my dad behind the butcher’s
counter which had just had an off-licence/
beer off added on in place of our old living
room – by this time we had moved house
to around the corner on Greenhill main
road. Indecision led me into the family
business.
I joined a wine trade which was the very
old fashioned, traditional, sherry and port,
whiskey and gin; wine was only table wine
for the weekend and only drunk by a few.
Most people didn’t drink at home but went
down the pub every night, but then the
retail price maintenance was lifted and we
saw the first cut prices – discounts galore!
‘Stack it up high - Sell it cheap’ trade
was on the up and Mitchells were
maturing, now well known as the ‘Beer &
Beef Shop’
Enough of my history lesson but I like to
think 40 years later that we are likened to
a good vintage port ready for drinking.
Port is a big hearted generous wine that
should be enjoyed in the same spirit and
falls into one of two groups, Wood Aged
Ports and Bottled Aged Ports.
Wood Aged Ports are generally young
wines bottled after three to five years
ageing in oak casks. Once bottled they
are ready for drinking and do not improve
in the bottle and also don’t need to be
decanted, they’re usually fitted with a
‘stopper cork’
Bottled Aged Ports mature in cask for a
shorter period of time and complete their
development once bottled, unfiltered.
These should be stored horizontally,
usually require decanting and need
drinking within days rather than weeks.
They are fitted with long ‘driven’ corks i.e.
require a corkscrew to extract. The longer
and slower development in the bottle gives
them more intense, complex and
interesting flavours.
Port is a fortified wine strengthened by
the addition of brandy during fermentation
from the Upper Douro Valley in Northern
Portugal. It takes its name from the town
of Oporto at the mouth of the Douro and
its nickname ‘The Englishman’s Drink’
derives from the fact that Portugal is our
oldest trading ally.
We currently have some Sandeman’s
1994 vintage port which is drinking now
but will keep on maturing just like me! This
has been given 10/10 by Decanters wine
magazine.
Just one question to end with — Can
anyone remember the vicar of St. Chad’s
who’s son John worked for us for about
three years about 20 years ago?
We like to compartmentalise life.
So we have a part of ourselves that
is about work; another about
relationships and family life; then bits
to do with finances; sport; health;
holidays; maybe a God or spirituality
section; etc; etc, etc..
But to live like that is not satisfying -
there is no joined-up thinking, and in
reality all these areas overlap as they
blend into one and make you and me
whole people. The question is, is there
one thing that unites them all - that
brings a coherence and unity? The
follower of Jesus sees their faith/
spirituality as that which brings shape
and unity to the whole.
So a mature spirituality is about faith
positively influencing every area of life.
We are given a very helpful and
practical example of this in the bible. St
Paul, in Ephesians 4:11-16 writes to
new Christians about his desire for them
to ‘become mature’ (v.13). He then
gives six examples of what this would
look like, and these six things still ring
true today:
1. STABILITY - the spiritually mature
are ‘not blown here and there by
every wave’ (v.14) of the latest fads,
philosophies or novelties; instead
they are stable in life and faith.
2. SPEECH - the mature are those who
‘speak the truth’ (v.15), that is, they
are not afraid to speak up for what is
right and wrong; they have clear
values which are not just personal
but are to be shared.
3. ACTIONS - as they speak the truth
they do so ‘in love’ (v.15). All their
actions have love as the root and the
S
aim, and so even if they speak
critically, it is kind, compassionate
and caring, demonstrated in actions
of love.
4. CHRIST - the mature ‘grow up into
Christ’ (v.15) which means that Jesus
Christ is the no.1 role-model and
there is a sense of being almost
subsumed by him and his cause.
This is a life-time progress of
growing. To think one has ‘made it’
displays an immature attitude.
5. UNITY - the mature recognise that
they are part of a ‘body, joined and
held together’ (v.16), which is a
picture of belonging to others and not
living just for ourselves. It reminds us
that we are better together than
apart, and that corporate groups like
family, church, community and
society are important.
6. INDIVIDUAL - whilst recognising our
need for corporate identity, we all
have our own part to play in life. God
calls and equips each one, as we
trust him, so we can ‘each do our
work’
The bible is full of helpful and wise
insight for life. This idea of joined-up
spiritual maturity is important if we are to
live life to the full.
Why not get out a bible, and have a
look at these verses in Ephesians 4.
They offer wisdom for a mature life.
H
Maturity - n. 1. Fully developed or
grown up 2. Ripe, seasoned.
The dictionary definition of "maturity" is
quite specific - it prompts us to consider a
mature wine with its fine full-bodied flavour,
or to conjure up the image of a
mature tree resplendent in its
autumn glory.
We think of a mature
cheese whose flavour and
texture has reached its
peak, or a mature garden
displaying beauty and
harmony, the result of
sensitive planting and
much loving care.
All of these are to
enjoyed and celebrated,
but do we apply this sense
of admiration and celebration when it
comes to people?
The path to maturity is very much shaped
by experiences, events and the acquisition
of knowledge. The vibrant energy of youth
and their unshakeable confidence that
they can, and will, change the world is
not maturity - it is the passing of the
years with all the responsibilities,
decision-making, errors of judgement,
and acknowledgement that we are not
the "Be All and End All" which matures
us. A mature person knows when to
offer advice and when to stay silent and
be a good listener.
There may be mature people living
quite close to us whose life experiences
have given them a wealth of knowledge,
who have many a story to tell, but who
feel trapped in their homes and would
welcome a friendly chat to enrich their
day.
They may be unable to travel very far
but might enjoy a gentle stroll or a
welcome ride to a nearby activity which
might provide an opportunity for shared
memories and some laughter. Perhaps
family members have moved away and
friends find it difficult to visit, but a younger,
more able-bodied person with a caring
heart could be a breath of fresh air.
Our mature friends and neighbours are
as much an essential part of our
community as are our cared-for
parks and woodlands and our
well-stocked shops, but we
have to make, and take,
time for them so that they
continue to thrive and feel
valued. Can we in
Woodseats and Beauchief
take action and lead the
way?
There is a group of caring
people in St. Chad's
Church who are giving
time, energy and love through its 3rd Age
ministry. You too can reach out by caring
for those near you or by encouraging others
to enquire if we can help continue to value
and nurture their passing years.
If you buy a tree for your garden you want to make sure that it lasts through
to maturity...
Just a handful of simple tasks — that’s
all it takes to give a recently planted tree
a better start in life.
And tree campaigning partnership The
Tree Council is urging everyone who has
planted trees in the last five years to revisit
them in early next spring and give
them some tender loving care.
Each year thousands of young trees,
planted with care, expense and enthusiasm,
die from the lack of just a few minutes
of aftercare — and time, money and
effort are wasted. The ideal time for this
vital care is March or April.
The council urges anyone who is either
planting trees during this winter’s season
or has done so in recent years to go back
and check on their young trees in the
spring.
The Tree Council has come up with
some simple tips for TLC:
• Tending, such as checking guards and
carrying out careful pruning;
• Loosening ties and checking stakes;
• Clearing grass and weeds from around
the tree’s base and applying mulches.
“One of our goals at the Tree Council is
to get better care for all trees of all ages
and the early years of a tree’s life are
particularly important,” said Tree Council
director-general Pauline Buchanan Black.
“In National Tree Week during November
we encourage everyone to get out
and plant trees.
“But it’s not enough just to plant trees,
however well it’s done. If we want young
trees to survive and mature, we need to
cherish the trees in ‘our’ ground in those
important early years.
"It’s vital to go back at least once a year
for about the first five years to check on
recently planted trees and carry out a few
easy tasks that will help more trees to
survive and enhance our neighbourhoods
for many years to come.”
The Tree Council’s Seed Gathering
Season takes place until October 23
when the organisation encourages people,
particularly children and families, to
gather seeds to grow the trees of the future
or to enjoy fruit in jams and pies.
People can go for a walk to collect
seeds, nuts and fruits from parks and
woods or take part in organised events.
As part of project, on October 6, the
South Yorkshire Forest Partnership is
organising the South Yorkshire Wood
Fair in Endcliffe Park.
There will be the chance to see chainsaw
artists and craftspeople in action, do
a rope walk in the trees, build a willow
labyrinth and enjoy fiery musical entertainment.
For details call 0114 257 1199.
National Tree Week takes place from
November 21 to December 2 and is a
long-established annual tree planting festival.
It takes place at an ideal time to
plant more trees of the right kind, and in
the right places. As well as tree planting,
National Tree Week activities include
walks, talks, songs and story telling.
The Book: The Summer Book
Author: Tove Jansson
Publisher: Sort of Books (Penguin)
ISBN: 0-9542217-1-0
RRP: £6.99
B R
Tove Jansson (1914-2001) is a
Finnish author known by many in
the UK for her Moomin books,
which many children have
enjoyed.
The Summer Book is an
English translation of one of ten
novels that she wrote for adults
and is regarded in Scandinavia
as a modern classic. This is an
easy-to-read book about an
elderly artist and her six-year-old
granddaughter, and their
experience of summer holidays
on a tiny island in the gulf of
Finland.
The two of them, in different
ways, learn and grow and mature
through their time on the island.
They learn to adjust to each
others whims and fears, and
come to appreciate more the
beauty of the island, the climate, the
weather and the seasons. There are
some interesting reflections on life,
love, faith, family life and nature.
If you are looking for action, this is
not the book for
you. This is a
gentle book—a
collection of
mini-stories and
reflections on
simple summer
experiences.
Jansson
captures much
of her own childhood in the book, and it
is said that this was her favourite of the
novels she wrote for adults.
Esther Freud, reviewing the book
describes it as ‘eccentric, funny, wise,
full of joys and small adventures. This
is a book for life’. I agree - so buy it for
a one of those lazy weeks or weekends.
Its 172 pages do not take long to read.
You will enjoy it and feel that, by sharing
in their stories, you have (just a little)
grown and matured.
S R
It is the perfect time of year to read (or re-read!) John Keats’ evocative poem ‘To
Autumn’. Most of us only remember the first couple of lines:
Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness!
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun…
A lovely reminder that there is lots of good stuff to look forward to, despite the return
of shorter days. We thought you’d enjoy a recipe for a vegetable which will be
reaching maturity in our fields! One of our favourites at this time of year is the
versatile squash. It can be used in a hearty bean and chorizo stew or roasted to
accompany your Sunday dinner – just a couple of ideas. Risotto is probably one of
our favourite meals on evenings where we feel like making just a little more effort –
although it requires some attention as the rice absorbs the stock, this is quite a good
way to unwind after a busy day. The ingredients of this dish are pleasingly simple.
Squash risotto
Preparation time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 25 minutes
Serves: 4
Ingredients:
For the squash:
• 2kg squash (any type)
• 6 cloves of garlic roughly chopped
• olive oil
• 1 tbsp of rosemary leaves roughly
chopped
For the risotto:
• 5tbsp of olive oil
• 325g of risotto rice
• 175ml dry white wine
• 250ml stock (veg or chicken)
• 50g butter
• 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
• salt and black pepper to taste
• parmesan to taste
For more seasonal recipe ideas visit
www.riverswale.co.uk
Method
For the squash: Cut into small cubes,
combine with garlic and rosemary,
drizzle with olive oil and roast in open
tin until the squash is firm but cooked.
For the risotto:
1. Gently heat all the olive oil and half
the butter and sweat the chopped onion
until translucent.
2. Add the rice to the onion and oil
mixture and stir in well.
3. Add the wine and allow the rice to
absorb.
4. Stir in the stock a little at a time until
it is absorbed and the rice is cooked.
5. When cooked or ‘al dente’, add the
roasted squash, the rest of the butter
and parmesan. Season to taste. Take
off the heat and cover for a couple of
minutes (this helps it go a lovely silky
texture).
6. Enjoy!
September 1927
MY DEAR FRIENDS,
There are signs that the holiday
season is drawing to an end.
Many who have encountered
bad weather are glad to be at
home. I must thank the congregation for their
steady support of the services throughout
August.
A millionaire said to an interviewer the other
day, "The greatest pleasure you can get from
earning a great deal of money is giving it
away."
Is not that one of the chief secrets of the
pleasure derived from a holiday? Most of the
year we are busy working and saving, and
then for a few brief days we take our ease,
and let others serve us, and spend at a rate
out of keeping with that of the greater part of
the year. Anyhow the change of scene and
even friends for a short time is good for us.
Presently we shall be facing our Autumn
Campaign, and I trust we shall do it all the
more vigorously, as a result of our visits to
the beautiful holiday haunts of our country.
October 1927
MY DEAR FRIENDS,
I ask you for a most generous response to
our appeal for liberal collections on Harvest
Thanksgiving Sunday.
We are supposed to raise £70 towards the
Diocesan Fund, but unless a miracle
happens, we cannot hope to reach that
amount this year. Still, let us do our best.
In October, we also celebrate our
Missionary Festival, and year after year I
have pled for an increased support for the
oldest of our Church Societies which
propagate the Gospel.
The services are on Sunday, 23rd October,
and I trust that there will be a rally of our
people to the support of the Missionary work
of the Church.
A Prayer for Maturity
Lord, thou knowest better
than I know myself that I am
growing older and will some
day be old.
Keep me from the fatal habit
of thinking I must say something
on every subject and on
every occasion.
Release me from craving to
straighten out everybody's
affairs.
Make me thoughtful, but not
moody - helpful, but not
bossy.
With my vast store of wisdom,
it seems a pity not to
use it all - but thou knowest,
Lord, that I want a few
friends at the end.
Keep my mind free from the
recital of endless details -
give me the wings to get to
the point.
Seal my lips on my aches
and pains - they are increasing,
and the love of rehearsing
them is becoming
sweeter as the years go by.
I dare not ask for grace
enough to enjoy the tales of
others' pains, but help me to
endure them.
I dare not ask for improved
memory, but for a growing
humility and a lessening
cock-sureness when my
memory seems to clash with
the memory of others.
Teach me the glorious lesson
that, occasionally, I may be
mistaken.
Keep me reasonably sweet. I
do not want to be a saint -
some of them are so hard to
live with - but a sour old
person is one of the crowning
works of the Devil.
Give me the ability to see
good things in unexpected
places and people.
And give me, O Lord, the
grace to tell them so.
Amen.
