BUSINESS
Hawarden store offers showplace for artists’ work
She opens business
in her hometown
BY TY RUSHING
STAFF WRITER
HAWARDEN—For Britney
Johnson, home isn’t just where
the heart is — it’s where the art
is.
The native of Hawarden
opened up Indie, a business
she describes as a “local art and
crafts consignment” shop in
April.
Johnson accomplished
this about eight months after
she and her husband, Bjorn,
returned to N’West Iowa after
years of being away from the
area. They last lived in the Twin
Cities.
“I am an artist and my mom
is as well,” Britney Johnson
said. “We were always making
things and looking for a place
to sell our stuff and there just
wasn’t anything, so I opened
a store. It’s a lot of pressure to
fill up a store with only our
own stuff, so I opened it up to
other artists — as long as you
are local and make it yourself.
If it’s handmade, then we take it
here.”
To Johnson’s amazement, she
has found a lot of people who
fit Indie’s vendor criteria. In
four months time, she has connected
with more than 30 local
artists whose wares range from
etched goats’ milk soap bars to
bowls made out of melted and
stylized vinyl records.
“I just kind of put the word
out that I was looking for
people,” she said. “I put it on
Facebook and just word-ofmouth
and it’s amazing; people
just keep coming in. I think we
get a new vendor every week.”
Johnson loves the variety
of goods offered in Indie’s
2,000-square-foot downtown
storefront. In addition to her
own artwork and upcycled
home decor items, the store’s
walls and shelves feature everything
from fresh local honey to
hand-knit baby clothes.
“We are taking everything; so
if it’s handmade it’s probably
here,” Johnson said.
Even the store’s name, Indie,
is a representation of individualism
each vendor brings.
THE OWNER:
Name: Britney Johnson
Position: Owner of Indie, local artists’ consignment shop in
Hawarden.
Age: 30
Residence: Hawarden
Education: Graduated from West Sioux High School in
Hawarden in 2004; earned bachelor’s degree from Iowa State
University in Ames in 2008.
Family: Husband, Bjork; daughter, Estelle, 7 months.
Interests: Cooking, crafting, gardening, landscaping and
painting.
Indie opened in downtown Hawarden in April. The art and crafts
consignment shop shares space with Transformations hair salon.
“It just kind of a reflection
independent artists that we
are servicing here,” Johnson
said. “The thought of like indie
records and indie movies — it
just felt right that we be called
‘Indie.’”
The 30-year-old also decorated
and arranged the store
herself. Besides running Indie,
Britney Johnson’s store, which she named Indie, located in downtown Hawarden, features the
works of more than 30 area artists as well as upcycled home decor items. Photos by Josh Harrell
Johnson operates her own interior
designer firm, B Design,
and earned a degree in the
practice from Iowa State University
in Ames in 2008.
“It was not new for me to
create the space; I knew where
I was going with it,” Johnson
said.
Another thing Johnson has
enjoyed about operating Indie
is working closely with her
mother, LeaAnn Bonnema,
after being away for so many
years.
Bonnema owns Transformations
hair salon, which shares
space with Indie, where she
also is a vendor.
“She was definitely in to
art,” Johnson said. “She would
always push me in 4-H — we
were big in there, doing projects
— and we’ve always been
doing stuff and making stuff.
We always went to auctions
and garage sales and buying
things to redo or change.”
Thanks to her mother’s in -
fluence, Johnson always has
had a soft spot for vintage and
reclaimed materials in her craft
making. One thing Indie has
shown her is that they are not
alone in that passion anymore.
“Everything goes in cycles
and people are interested in the
past again — older things —
not everything has to be new,”
she said. “The vintage craze is
here; I’ve always been into and
I’m glad that other people are
too.”
A year into her return to the
region and Johnson has no
regrets. She is closer to her
family, and is able to support
herself by turning her love of art
into a full-time job.
“I loved interior design, but I
really missed having the opportunity
to just put my own art
out there,” she said. “I’m loving
the freedom of creating my
own things and the space and
running it how I would like to.”

BUSINESS
Customers can bank on
Van Briesen being there
She has worked at
location 60 years
BY TY RUSHING
STAFF WRITER
GEORGE—Thelma Van Briesen
applied for one job after
she graduated from George
High School in 1956, and it
turned out be the only job she
has ever needed.
The 78-year-old George
resident celebrated her 60th
anniversary of working at the
Security Savings Bank location
in George on July 6,
The bank previously operated
as George State Bank prior
to a 2007 merger with Larchwood-based
Security Savings
Bank; however, the downtown
George location has remained
the same.
Although Van Briesen has a
lifetime of banking experience,
she fell into the vocation by
accident.
“My cousin quit here, so
then there was an opening so
I applied,” Van Briesen said.
“At first I was going to go to
business school, but that came
open and I just decided to take
that.”
She started off as a bookkeeper
at the bank, which
required her to manually add
up transactions through a posting
machine.
“Everyday we had to post all
the checks by hand and the
deposits, sort them all alphabetically
and then make up
new statement sheets for each
month,” she said.
As an 18-year-old recent high
school graduate, Van Briesen
said working at the bank was a
little intimidating initially.
“We lived on the farm, so I
was never used to going a lot
of places and doing a lot of
things,” she said.
Eventually, Van Briesen grew
more comfortable at the bank
and expanded her role. Over
the decades, she has a done of
bit of everything at the financial
institution, from customer service
to performing secretarial
AT A GLANCE:
Name: Thelma Van Briesen
Position: Assistant cashier at Security Savings Bank in
George
Start date: July 9, 1956
Age: 78
Residence: George
Education: Graduated from George High School in 1956.
Experience: Has worked in various roles George State
Bank/Security Savings Bank since 1956.
Family: Single.
Interests: Gardening, attending her grandnieces’ and
grandnephews’ sporting events and going to church.
A 1964 newspaper advertisement for what was then known as
George State Bank featured employee Thelma Van Briesen.
duties for past bank presidents.
One thing that has remained
constant about her time at the
bank is how much she enjoys
visiting with customers.
“It’s a small town; you know
Thelma Van Briesen has worked at the Security Savings Bank site in George since 1956, when
it was George State Bank. It has been the only job that she has ever had. Photo by Josh Harrell
a majority of the people,” she
said
Van Briesen said she has
never even looked for another
job.
“It’s close — right here in
town — so it’s handy, and I just
never considered a different
job, I guess,” she said.
Besides the advent of computers
to the banking industry,
another significant moment
Van Briesen recalls is how a
banking scandal in Sheldon
changed things at her bank.
Burnice Geiger, a former
employee at Sheldon National
Bank, embezzled about $2 million
from the financial institution
before she was caught in
1961.
Van Briesen noted Geiger’s
crimes led to her bank in
George instituting mandatory
two-week paid vacations
for employees. The thought
behind this was that if something
suspicious was occurring,
it would become noticeable
during that employee’s
absence.
“At that time, our president,
Bob Manuel, said to us, ‘Girls,
don’t ever start doing that
because you won’t be able to
stop,’” Van Briesen said.
While her longevity at the
bank is impressive, Van Briesen
noted it is a pretty simple
formula that keeps her going,
and most people are capable of
adhering to it.
“Try to do your best and be at
work,” she said.
Annette Maggert, a senior
vice president at Security Savings
Bank, noted she can count
on one hand the number of
times Van Briesen has missed
work.
“If she was called to be at
work, she was there unless
it was for a funeral and I’m
guessing a handful of times for
illness,” Maggert said. “So when
she says, ‘Come to work when
you are supposed to come to
work,’ that’s what she did.”
Van Briesen noted she has no
plans to retire anytime soon.
“I haven’t really thought
about it,” she said. “I’m going to
keep working, I guess.”

BUSINESS
Unusual career path leads to position at hospital
Gebauer oversees
patient care duties
BY JAKE ROGERS
STAFF WRITER
ORANGE CITY—Asking an
18-year-old what career path
she wants to do with the rest of
her life is one of the toughest
questions to answer at that age.
Like many others, 57-yearold
Laurie Gebauer did not
know what career path she
wanted to take after she graduated
from Floyd Valley High
School in Alton in 1977.
“I had no idea what I wanted
to do with my life after I graduated
high school,” said Gebauer,
a native of Alton. “I decided
to get a job as a nurse’s aide,
and that ultimately led me to
where I am now.”
Her journey
The Granville resident started
as a nurse’s aide at Hillcrest
Hospital in Oklahoma City and
now serves as the director of
patient care services at Orange
City Area Health System. She
also is a member of the Granville
ambulance team.
“Working for the Granville
ambulance team is my way of
giving back to the community,”
Gebauer said.
She noted that her journey
was not typical route of
the post-high school path of
attending college then getting
hired into the workforce.
“My husband Jim and I
moved down to Oklahoma City
to be closer to his family and
that is when I started working
at Hillcrest Hospital,” Gebauer
said. “We lived down there for
10 years and decided to move
to Granville because we wanted
to raise our three kids — Jason,
Melissa and Stacey — in this
area.”
During her time as a nurse’s
aide in Oklahoma City, Gebauer,
with a little help, realized
nursing was something that
she wanted to do for the rest of
her life.
“God helped me realize that
I wanted to be in a nursing setting
for my career,” she said.
When Gebauer moved to
Granville from Oklahoma City,
she furthered her education
before getting hired at Orange
City Area Health System.
She earned her associate
degree in nursing from Northwest
Iowa Technical College in
Sheldon in 1985.
“Working as a licensed practical
nurse, I knew I wanted to go
on to RN school,” Gebauer said.
“I was busy raising my family
so I waited until the timing was
right.”
She continued her education
at the University of Iowa
in Iowa City by obtaining her
bachelor’s degree in nursing in
2002.
Gebauer’s initial positions at
Orange City Area Health System
were as a staff nurse and an
emergency room manager.
“I enjoy helping patients and
working with the great people
here,” she said. “Being a staff
nurse is very much hands on,
and I enjoy that work so much.
“My journey has led me to
working for an organization
that is dedicated to the caring
of patients.”
Gebauer still had the itch to
go back to school after graduating
from Iowa. She earned her
master’s degree in nurse education
from Briar Cliff University
in 2007, and while she went
back to school, she was able to
continue her role as a nurse.
Laurie Gebauer serves as the director of patient care services at Orange City Area Health System. She took over the position in
2007 after previously working in a variety of health-care positions, starting at a hospital in Oklahoma City. Photos by Josh Harrell
Director of patient care services Laurie Gebauer fields a phone
call regarding nursing staff at Orange City Area Health System.
Current position
After graduating with her
master’s degree, Orange City
Area Health System offered her
the position as the director of
patient care services. In that
role Gebauer oversees different
departments at Orange City
Area Health Services.
“I oversee the emergency
room, surgery, outpatient services
and OB/GYN,” she said.
“I have nine direct reports and
a staff of 70 registered nurses
plus ancillary staff. I also have
to work with the hospital’s budgets,
patient issues and patient
complaints.”
There are some aspects of
her job that are difficult to
deal with. Daily changes in
Medicare, Medicaid and other
aspects with health insurance
keep Gebauer on her toes.
“I love helping people, but
the daily changes with health
insurance, Medicare and Medicaid
make it challenging to do
that sometimes,” she said.
Despite those challenges,
Gebauer loves coming to work
as the director. Before accepting
the position in 2007, she
asked if she could work one
shift per week as a staff nurse.
“I still wanted to do nursetype
duties even though I
accepted a new position,” Ge -
bauer said. “That allows me
to do what I went to nursing
school for and that is to take
care of patients. We are blessed
as care givers to be a part of
some of the happiest times of
their lives — birth — but also
honored that they allow us to
be a part of the tough and sad
times — death.”
When she is not working,
Gebauer enjoys spending time
with her three children and
scale back their expectations at
first.
“Things don’t always look the
way that you expect them to,
but it still works out well in the
end if you have a good attitude
and keep working hard,” Van
Dyke said.
One of the challenges for the
two women was learning the
ins and outs of running a business
like Compass.
However, Calkhoven’s husband,
Mike, and Van Dyke’s
husband, Greg, have helped
out where they can, such has
listening to their wives’ ideas
and giving their own suggestions
as well as taking care of
their respective children.
The Calkhovens have four
daughters and one son; the Van
Dykes have two girls.
“The support of families
has been very helpful,” Van
Dyke said. “Even though our
husbands don’t do much for
the day-to-day, they do a lot of
supporting. Grandparents have
been helpful.”
Calkhoven agreed.
“Our husbands have been a
great help,” she said. “They’ve
been very supportive. It’s been
a blessing.”
‘Our dream’
Van Dyke described Compass’
main objective.
“Our goal is to help people
move better and more often,
so to move well and prevent
injuries and disease later in
life,” Van Dyke said. “That’s
definitely our hope and our
dream. Quality of movement in
what you do is very important.”
Calkhoven and Van Dyke split
their time between Compass’
locations in Hull and Sioux
Center.
“We spend a lot of regular
hours here in Hull, and then in
Sioux Center, I teach a couple
of classes there,” Van Dyke said.
“There’s always cleaning to be
done no matter where you are.”
Compass’ members have key
cards that allow them 24-hour
Renae Calkhoven and Lorilyn Van Dyke own Compass Fitness & Wellness, which has locations in Hull and Sioux Center.
access to both sites if they want.
“We offer reciprocity between
the two locations,” Van Dyke
said. “There are quite a few
people who live in Hull and
work in Sioux Center or live in
Sioux Center and work in Hull.
This way, they can go over the
noon hour or at night.”
The Hull location has a wide
range of exercise equipment
and group fitness classes for
Compass’ members to take
advantage of.
The Sioux Center site also has
various exercise equipment
and is the home of CrossFit
Siouxland.
CrossFit is described as a
strength and conditioning
program for law enforcement
officers, military members and
athletes.
‘Provide a service’
While the two women have
focused on the fitness side of
their business, they soon want
to expand more into the wellness
side, especially corporate
wellness, and help companies
keep health insurance costs
down.
“We hope to provide a service
to companies who like
to improve the health of their
employees,” Van Dyke said.
“We’re going to take some certifications
as well as develop programming
to do some health
challenges, some biometric
screening — those would be
your numbers like blood pressure,
cholesterol, resting heart
rate, blood sugars.”
Before Calkhoven and Van
Dyke took over the exercise
centers, the two locations were
called Fuss Fitness and under
the ownership of Jeff and Jill
Bahrenfuss, but the couple
decided to focus solely on their
Orange City site and sell the
other two.
Van Dyke started working in
August 2015 at Fuss Fitness in
Sioux Center and was in charge
of medical fitness. Jeff Bahrenfuss
approached her last fall to
see whether she was interested
in purchasing the Hull and
Sioux Center fitness facilities.
Van Dyke talked to Calkhoven
about possibly buying
the exercise centers and they
decided to go through with the
purchase after also weighing
the pros and cons with their
husbands.
Their respective backgrounds
helped the two women to pursue
the purchase.
Van Dyke is an Orange City
native who attended Calvin
College in Grand Rapids, MI,
and majored in exercise science.
She graduated in 2007.
“I then worked in Maryland
for a little while at a facility
associated with a hospital,
where there was cardiac rehab
and things like that,” she said.
Van Dyke, whose husband
grew up in Sheldon, moved
back to N’West Iowa at the
end of 2007 and coached cross
country and track and field for
eight years at Dordt College in
Sioux Center.
She also obtained a master’s
degree in exercise science, with
an emphasis in health promotion,
online in 2010 through the
California University of Pennsylvania.
Calkhoven was raised in
Montana. She ended up in the
northwest corner of Iowa in
1995 by attending Dordt, where
she met her husband, who is a
Hull native.
The couple later moved to
Sioux City, where they lived for
a decade. Calkhoven completed
her four-year nursing degree
at Morningside College during
that time.
She worked in hospital in -
tensive care units and then
became a stay-at-home mom.
She and her husband relocated
in 2010 to Sioux Center.
‘It’s a fun place’
Calkhoven and Van Dyke
have no regrets about becoming
business owners.
“We probably have the best
members,” Van Dyke said.
“They’re very welcoming and
they’re very kind.”
Calkhoven agreed.
“The biggest joy has been
meeting people and getting to
know people better, and helping
them in every way we can,”
she said.
Van Dyke said Compass has
quality personnel.
“We have some great personal
trainers who can offer
some knowledge and skills, and
improve movement,” she said.
“They’re educated and experienced.
That’s been helpful.”
“Come and check us out,” she
concluded. “It’s a fun place to
BUSINESS
Key to success: ‘We love what we do,’ she says
BERKLAND
Continued from page D1
Veterinary Clinic since 1984
in the Osceola County community.
“We love what we do,” Loretta
said. “There are not a whole lot
of other things that you really
love to do more than the job
that you do when you get out of
bed every day.”
She is living her dream by
working as a qualified medical
professional who cares for the
health of animals and works to
improve public health.
“I have always wanted to be a
veterinarian — always, always,
always,” Loretta said. “I always
wanted to work with animals.”
At the Sibley Veterinary
Clinic, Loretta and Dan get to
work with all kinds of animals,
including people’s alpacas and
llamas, birds, cats, cattle and
dairy cows, dogs, elks, goats,
guinea pigs, hamsters, horses,
iguanas, pigs, rabbits, rodents,
sheep and snakes.
“It’s really a lot of fun to see
all of the different species,”
Loretta said. “We call ourselves
a mixed-animal practice.”
‘Dream come true’
She loves all animals, but
nothing equals her enjoyment
of all things equine.
“Horses are my all-time fa -
vorite,” Loretta said. “Of course,
growing up in the city, I never
had an opportunity to own a
horse, so when I came out to
Iowa, my husband — bless his
heart — gave me my first horse
for our first anniversary present.
It was like a dream come
true. We’ve had horses ever
since.”
The horse Dan gave her was
an American quarter horse.
They have three of those at
home.
Loretta and daughter Jill, who
soon will start her senior year at
Sibley-Ocheyedan High School
in Sibley, show horses. The
Berklands have four children.
“Anything that has to do
with horses — that’s my love,”
Loretta said.
Dan and Loretta met during
the summer of 1981 because
of his great-uncle Wayne Riser,
Loretta Berkland checks an IV drip on a recovering dog at the Sibley Veterinary Clinic. She has co-owned the practice with her husband, Dan, for more than three
decades. Over that time they have seen their business continually grow, most recently adding more space for boarding and grooming. Photo by Josh Harrell
who was Loretta’s pathology
professor and work-study professor
at the University of
Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
A Ruthven native, Dan was
attending Iowa State University’s
College of Veterinary
Medicine in Ames at the time.
“He convinced Dan, his
great-nephew, to take a smallanimal
medicine rotation for
four weeks through the University
of Pennsylvania School of
Veterinary Medicine because
that’s where he taught and
because we saw a high volume
of small animals,” Loretta said
of Riser.
“At that point in time, at Iowa
State, you didn’t see the high
volume of small animals —
small-animal emergencies, pet
emergencies and things like
that — that they see today.
“It was my job as the workstudy
student to make sure
that the young man from Iowa
did not get mugged, knew
where the Burger King was,
knew where the laundromat
was, could get to the vet school
and back,” she continued. “We
had a house full of people that
stayed all summer at veterinary
school, that worked at the
school or whatever, so he just fit
right in. That’s how we met, and
I guess I’ve been taking care of
him ever since.”
More boarding room
Dan graduated from ISU in
1982 and Loretta graduated
from the University of Pennsylvania
in 1983.
They were married June
30, 1984, in Philadelphia and
became the owners of the Sibley
Veterinary Clinic the next
day.
The couple moved their practice
five years later from downtown
Sibley to just northwest of
the city.
More recently, Harms & Henrichs
Inc. of Sibley began an
approximately 1,300-squarefoot
expansion project at the
roughly 3,500-square-foot Sibley
Veterinary Clinic in late May
and is scheduled to be done by
the end of September.
“Boarding and grooming
is a big deal,” Loretta said.
“That whole entire addition is
going to be for boarding and
grooming. We do boarding
and grooming, but our facility
is small; we thought it was big
when we built it.
“The boarding and grooming
business has just exploded,”
she continued. “People want
their animals in a place where
they know that if they need to,
there’s a veterinarian there who
can take care of them. We have
invested in our clients, and
we’re going to give them a new
boarding facility.”
The practice’s groomer is Deb
Hunt, who owns Tails Awagging
Pet Grooming in Rock Rapids
and visits the Sibley Veterinary
Clinic one or two days a week.
“She’s back in the back where
we thought it was big enough
for her, but her business has
expanded, also,” Loretta said.
“She comes to us as kind of
an independent contractor.
She rents space. It’s a win-win
for both of us because she has
clientele here in Sibley and we
get to see those animals and
update their vaccinations.
“It’s a big enough part of our
business and a service that we
want to continue to provide
that it’s almost like she needed
FEED DIRECTIVE MEETING
into effect Jan. 1, which will affect
To prepare for this new Food and
