Swaffham History Group
An old photograph of a familiar Swaffham landmark
has been discovered by a member of the group,
showing the Greyhound Inn. The date is unknown
but seems to be well before the turn of the 19th
century and is the first we know which does not
show the building’s name on the facade. Despite
all the research which the group undertook for our
series of 14 booklets on the old pubs in the town,
this one never materialised! If anyone can shed any
more light on this we would love to hear from you.
All the booklets mentioned are still available, on sale
at the museum. There will shortly be another booklet
available (hopefully in time for Christmas). It is a
companion volume to the “Crime and Punishment”
book recently published - this time on ‘Fires in Swaffham’
from the 1700s and includes a full report of the great fire
of Swaffham in 1775 as well as the history of how fires
have been tackled during the centuries. Again member
Barry Ellis has been able to discover some fascinating
original newspaper stories from the tune.
Our next meeting is on Monday 14th November
and we would welcome a few new members who
are interested in the history of Swaffham and would
be willing to help in various research topics being
undertaken, some in conjunction with the museum.

Merle Boddy Centre
The Swaffham and District Mental health Association
which is the company name of the Merle Boddy
Day Centre will be holding its AGM on Thursday 3rd
November at 7pm in the Day Centre. We extend a
warm welcome to Swaffham residents, and hope
you will come and give us your support as we reflect
on a very busy year.
Demand for our service is at an all time high,
which has of course caused a fair amount of
wear and tear on the building, so we are going
to refurbish the toilet block, the corridor to it ,
and update our fire systems as part of a Health
and Safety review.
On Friday October 21st there will be a quiz night
at the Peddars Inn, 70 The Street, Sporle PE32
2DR - 7.30 pm start - teams up to 6 people, so
please come and support this event - all funds
raised go to Merle Boddy.
The magic ingredient that sets Merle Boddy
apart is the commitment of our wonderful staff
who go above and beyond when it comes to the
dedicated care of our service users, and play a
very large part in maintaining an independent
lifestyle for much longer than often projected.
If you would like to help in any way - from helping
out at the Day Centre, delivering leaflets or
maybe even applying to be a Trustee then please
do come and see us - at the AGM or just pop into
the Centre between 9 and 3pm Monday to Friday.
We would like to send my enormous thanks to all the
parishioners of Swaffham Baptist Church for their
very generous gift of the Harvest Festival goods.
We are now stocked up with tea, coffee, hot
chocolate, biscuits and an array of goodies for all our
clients to enjoy.
This wonderful gift which we have been very lucky
to be given for many years is always a great joy to
receive.
