The Nicholas Hamond Academy
Students and staff at The Nicholas Hamond Academy
in Swaffham are celebrating the achievement of
the Sainsbury’s Schools Games Silver Award. This
recognises continued commitment to sport and
celebrates the dedication of the large number
of students participating in extracurricular club
events setting a new benchmark at the Academy.
Many students have also engaged in activities with
other local schools enabling them to sharpen their
leadership skills.
Swaffham Twinning Association
BREXIT or REMAIN. Either way the Swaffham
Twinning Association remained true to its aims of
promoting friendship with our European neighbours
on the 23rd September, when all three towns met
together for our penultimate weekend prior to our
fifty year celebrations in 2018 in Couhé France. The
towns of Swaffham, Couhé and Hemmoor were
well represented and about 80 guests attended
the official receptions and organised events which
included Gressinghall, Lynford Hall and the Green
Britain Centre. Alongside the official occasions were
many trips and social evenings given by the English
hosts. Entertainment was provided by the delighul
“Red Shoes” and the “Novinka Folskaband” who had
all nationalities singing, dancing and cheering for the
whole evening which was voted the “best ever” by
all. Whatever happens, the UK will remain closely
tied to Europe and Twinning is a wonderful way to
show friendship with European people.
The Academy have their sights firmly set on
gold next year!
Well ~ we sung in Swaffham for World Peace Day with
choirs from around Norfolk and made a whopping
£250 plus for Free the Children, a charity that
educates and empowers young people on a global
scale. If you came, thank you for making this such a
successful evening. It was great fun and the church
has such fantastic acoustics.
Our next outing is our Christmas concert on
Wednesday, 14 December in the Swaffham Parish
Church at 7.30pm when we share the stage with
the Big Heart and Soul Choir. Tickets are £8 (£6 for
concessions) and will be available on the door and
you should really come. We’ll be singing folk music
from around the world with its wonderful rhythms
and sounds including a favourite of mine ~ Amazing
Grace.
Come and speak to us to find out more about our
choir ~ we’ve already welcomed two new members
this term and there’s always room for more.
Rocks Don’t Cry
Swaffham author and poet Cyril Holbrook has a new
novel out which tells of dramatic upheaval in an East
Anglian town. It is set in the days immediately after
WW2 and concerns what happens when the Alderman
– who owns most of the land in the district and chairs
the local council – does not get his way for once.
Cyril was born a Fenman but has lived in Norfolk
much of his life. He worked on several newspapers,
including the EDP and Peterborough Evening
Telegraph. He was production editor of Angling Times
and went to edit a variety of magazines, some while
he lived in Spain with his wife and son. On retiring,
he has lived in Swaffham for the past 10 years.
From Ceres bookshop “Rocks Don’t Cry” will open the
eyes of those born long after those post war years, and
stir the memory of their grandparents.
