AAA Screening
I was only recently made aware of the above having
never seen any publicity before regarding this
valuable procedure offered by the NHS to all men
aged 65 and over.
What is AAA Screening you may well ask?? In simple
terms it involves a five minute session where a scan
will be taken of your aorta, the body’s main blood
vessel, to look for any weakness or expansion, as a
result of which could then lead to an “Abdominal
Aortic Aneurysm” hence AAA.
Such screening can immediately ascertain our level
of risk or otherwise from this condition and allow
the NHS to offer advice on further investigation
if required. Failure to spot this problem can lead
to fatal health issues, so why would we not take
advantage of this screening??
Detailed information can be found at www.nhs.uk/
aaadecisionaid and after reading I would encourage
you all to call the AAA Screening Office in Norwich
on 01603 288218/288217 to make an appointment
which will probably be at the Swaffham Cottage
Hospital. It may be early next year before your scan
but very much worth the wait!!
Thanks for your time in reading this important message.
West Norfolk Carers
If you are looking after a family member or a
friend because they can’t look after themselves,
and you are not paid for doing so, then you
are a carer. And the chances are you will need
some help and support. West Norfolk Carers is
here to support unpaid family carers because
we understand the stresses and strains you may
face. We run Carers Groups in Downham Market,
Swaffham, King’s Lynn and Hunstanton and
we run Young Carers groups (from as young as
7 years old up to 18 years). We can visit carers
to help assess your needs and advise on grants,
benefits, activities, which organisations you
should approach and so on. We’re here to give
you a friendly shoulder to lean on.
Recently WNC was awarded funding to run a
TRANSFORMING LIVES project targeted at young
adult carers 35 years and under. Here we can offer all
the above support plus free training to improve your
personal wellbeing. Training and workshops can
help you in areas such as stress management, selfconfidence,
life and parenting skills, career planning,
job ready skills, opportunities to access volunteering
and work plus give you the chance to have some
time for yourself on something you enjoy, eg cooking
tuition, nutrition, relaxation classes, drama, music or
activity sessions.
Book Launch
Huib van Hoeven from Castle Acre has published
his third book. This time not about his own life and
experiences in the Royal Netherlands Navy, but on
the subject of faith and religion. Too often religion
is portrayed in a serious manner that fails to spark
the imagination of the younger generation.
His book is called :“Religion can be Fun”, with
a sub-title:”See the difference for yourself”.
Bishop Jonathan, the Bishop of Lynn has written
a foreword to it. He says:”I hope you will enjoy it;
that it will pause for thought”.
A book signing will take place at Ceres Book shop
Swaffham, Saturday 29 October between 10 and 12
The price is £7.99, reduced to £7 during the signing.
Anybody not able to attend and who wants to
order can do so via e-mail. P&P to be charged.
