The Harbour Student Sports Council was created
as a direct result of the Regional Sports Plan, with
each school able to have representation in ?the
student voice?. Another new initiative which has
been very positively received has seen the
introduction of the Secondary Student Volunteer
of the Month, which recognises student
volunteers in sport within their school.
Numerous clubs and RSO?s are supported in their
capability development as Harbour Sport works
closely to ensure strategic plans, financial plans,
volunteer plans and business plans are in place
to support their work and ensure they can grow
while retaining their quality offerings to the
community.
Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) remain a
crucial part of development in engaging and
retaining young people in sport. Harbour Sport
has continued to focus on upskilling teachers, by
delivering professional development sessions in
schools, on a variety of FMS topics. This year 509
teachers participated in sessions, impacting on
11,710 children.
The SportSPasifik programme developed by
Harbour Sport addresses barriers to healthy
lifestyles by facilitating wellbeing and community
cohesion and improving health outcomes by
increased participation in sport and physical
activity. The development of the project over a
number of years has created a life stage model
which now enables Harbour Sport to engage with
all ages in the Pacific community.
A number of new ActivAsian initiatives were
implemented including ?Walk With Us Albany?
which has grown from a small group of 20 new
migrants, to a record group of 61 participants.
This shows a great interest by the group in both
walking as a physical activity and the desire to
learn more about their new home. A
collaborative Aquatics project has also
highlighted the need for leadership in the area of
water safety and aquatics within the new migrant
community. To date, 18 new bi-lingual swim
instructors have been trained, with a further 22
to be trained in the coming months.
To our key financial partners, we thank you for
the faith that you have in Harbour Sport to
deliver. We know that sport and recreation brings
about significant benefits other than just health
and fitness. We appreciate that you share with us
the values of growing community cohesion and
connection, supporting the wellbeing of our
community and investing in its future.
Finally my thanks to the Board and the staff. You
are crucial to the impact that Harbour Sport has
in the community. You are the hands and feet,
you make the difference for getting people active
in the North Harbour region and I thank you
sincerely for that.
