Chairman’s Report<br />

It is with pleasure that I<br />

present my first Chairman’s<br />

Report on the activities of<br />

Harbour Sport during <strong>2012</strong>.<br />

Firstly, I would like to<br />

thank the Trustees of<br />

Harbour Sport, a group<br />

of volunteers who<br />

contribute significantly<br />

to the governance and<br />

development of Harbour<br />

Sport sharing their<br />

knowledge and experience<br />

both from within sport and from external sectors. To Pete<br />

Smalberger, Brett O’Riley, Bevan Catley, Lynn Coleman,<br />

Ian Jones, Michael Goudie, Helen Varney, Ted Benton and<br />

Tim Holdgate, many thanks for your contribution and for<br />

volunteering to be a vital part of Harbour Sport.<br />

While Auckland Council continues its transition into a new<br />

model of local government, Harbour Sport has continued<br />

to work hard to retain strong relationships at all levels<br />

in local government. Councils are huge funders of sport<br />

and recreation and significant collaborative partnerships<br />

between Harbour Sport and Council are beneficial to the<br />

whole community.<br />

Harbour Sport is currently working with Sport NZ,<br />

Auckland Council and the other Auckland RSTs to discuss<br />

the changes in the Auckland Council space and ensuring<br />

effective delivery of sport across Auckland.<br />

Diversifying income streams continues to be a focus for<br />

Harbour Sport with a direct correlation between income<br />

and the ability to service a larger proportion of the<br />

community. As stated in Harbour Sport’s Statement of<br />

Intent, financial sustainability and diversity will be at<br />

the core of Harbour Sport’s potential to achieve.<br />

Partners are vital in an organisation that role models<br />

partnership and good business relationships. I would like<br />

to thank our key partners with whom we have worked<br />

this year. Sport NZ continues to be an integral partner<br />

in supporting our work in the community. To Auckland<br />

Council, Waitemata District Health Board, Ministry of<br />

Health, ASB Charitable Trust, Youthtown and Massey<br />

University we thank you for your confidence in the work<br />

that we do.<br />

I cannot really do justice to the contribution Toni-Maree<br />

and her team make to Harbour Sport. It is their dedication<br />

and commitment as well as great professionalism that<br />

ultimately creates the platform to develop sport and<br />

recreation in the Harbour Region.<br />

The role of the Regional Sports Trust continues to be<br />

integral to the sports community and the community<br />

as a whole, as sport and recreation organisations deal<br />

with a range of issues. The advocacy that Harbour Sport<br />

provides right across the sports sector is an advantage<br />

that sport and recreation in our community has benefitted<br />

from. Evidence of this was inclusion of the chapter for<br />

sport and recreation in the recently published Auckland<br />

Plan. I trust the Harbour Community can continue to<br />

benefit from a leader in sport supporting and investing in<br />

more quality sport and recreation opportunities for the<br />

community.<br />
