Chairman’s Report
It is with pleasure that I
present my first Chairman’s
Report on the activities of
Harbour Sport during 2012.
Firstly, I would like to
thank the Trustees of
Harbour Sport, a group
of volunteers who
contribute significantly
to the governance and
development of Harbour
Sport sharing their
knowledge and experience
both from within sport and from external sectors. To Pete
Smalberger, Brett O’Riley, Bevan Catley, Lynn Coleman,
Ian Jones, Michael Goudie, Helen Varney, Ted Benton and
Tim Holdgate, many thanks for your contribution and for
volunteering to be a vital part of Harbour Sport.
While Auckland Council continues its transition into a new
model of local government, Harbour Sport has continued
to work hard to retain strong relationships at all levels
in local government. Councils are huge funders of sport
and recreation and significant collaborative partnerships
between Harbour Sport and Council are beneficial to the
whole community.
Harbour Sport is currently working with Sport NZ,
Auckland Council and the other Auckland RSTs to discuss
the changes in the Auckland Council space and ensuring
effective delivery of sport across Auckland.
Diversifying income streams continues to be a focus for
Harbour Sport with a direct correlation between income
and the ability to service a larger proportion of the
community. As stated in Harbour Sport’s Statement of
Intent, financial sustainability and diversity will be at
the core of Harbour Sport’s potential to achieve.
Partners are vital in an organisation that role models
partnership and good business relationships. I would like
to thank our key partners with whom we have worked
this year. Sport NZ continues to be an integral partner
in supporting our work in the community. To Auckland
Council, Waitemata District Health Board, Ministry of
Health, ASB Charitable Trust, Youthtown and Massey
University we thank you for your confidence in the work
that we do.
I cannot really do justice to the contribution Toni-Maree
and her team make to Harbour Sport. It is their dedication
and commitment as well as great professionalism that
ultimately creates the platform to develop sport and
recreation in the Harbour Region.
The role of the Regional Sports Trust continues to be
integral to the sports community and the community
as a whole, as sport and recreation organisations deal
with a range of issues. The advocacy that Harbour Sport
provides right across the sports sector is an advantage
that sport and recreation in our community has benefitted
from. Evidence of this was inclusion of the chapter for
sport and recreation in the recently published Auckland
Plan. I trust the Harbour Community can continue to
benefit from a leader in sport supporting and investing in
more quality sport and recreation opportunities for the
community.
