Sport Capability
STRENGTHENING AND CONNECTING COMMUNITY SPORT
The Sport Capability Team has a targeted approach
to sport development this year. The 2011/2012 year
has seen further development of ‘Whole of Sport’
partnership agreements and projects within these plans
with Sport NZ’s seven national focus sports (Rugby Union,
Rugby League, Netball, Hockey, Football, Gym Sports
and Cricket) and Harbour Sport’s regional identified
sports (Softball, Volleyball, Basketball and Touch).
Harbour Sport has also supported several projects for
sports outside of the Sport NZ targeted organisations
which have shown success:
• Harbour Hockey – Year 5/6 programme and coach
development projects initiated and completed.
Volunteer and Event support for Champions Trophy.
and linking local community.
connect with Harbour Schools.
• Sports and KiwiSport – supported regional sports
to collaborate and target school cluster delivery of
sport programmes. 17 Sports and over 70 schools are
now involved in KiwiSport across the region.
GOVERNANCE AND SPORT LEADERSHIP
The North Harbour Sports Council continues to evolve
and is an important advisory group for Harbour
Sport. Membership now includes 28 regional Sports
Organisations representing approximately 100,000
sports participants in the region. Achievements over
the 2011/2012 year have included submissions to the
Local Boards on the Local Board Plans, and significant
submissions to the Auckland Plan. The group will
continue to operate and feed directly into the Auckland
Sports Coalition with a focus on ensuring the needs of
the Harbour sporting community are heard through a
collective voice.
The “Sector Knowledge” days that Harbour Sport
facilitates on behalf of Harbour Regional Sports
Organisation CEO’s and development staff have been
further evolved providing specific training around
identified topics to meet needs in the community.
This forum has provided a variety of professional
development and network opportunities which ensure
Harbour sport organisations are continuously improving
and providing quality sporting environments for their
members.
The development of the “Game Plan”, the Sport
Capability Team publication provides stakeholders
with relevant information to upcoming events and our
involvement within the Harbour region. This resource
has proved very popular with increasing numbers
utilising and applying the content on a regular basis.
The ‘Mi Club’ workshop was developed where Harbour
Sport facilitates a workshop for outside providers to
provide clubs and sporting organisations with knowledge
and development resources. This proved very popular
with 28 clubs and 40 attendees.
SECONDARY SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT
Development of secondary school relationships has been
strengthened through the development of KiwiSport
projects. Twenty of twenty – one secondary schools have
utilised the funding and are involved in projects that
develop coaching skills, create opportunities to play
local sport, and encourage lunchtime sport activities.
Sport Development work carried out in the school
space was around whole of school sport planning that
support initiatives to develop capability and drive sport
programmes. Several schools have developed their sport
plans that the school has committed to implementing.
Relationships have been strengthened with RSO’s to
enable them to develop opportunities that meet the
needs of their secondary school students.
GACU Coaching
This year Harbour Sport has concentrated on up skilling
and developing youth coaches and working with young
people. Advocating for and influencing heads of schools/
clubs/community groups to understand that coaches
can have a positive influence on the people they are
coaching has been a focus this year. Another priority has
been bringing together tertiary and high performance
ideas and strategies into a community context so our
coaches can continually improve.
