87 Best of...Base Layers Ben Maxfield Best of... Base Layers So base layers are the garment closest to your skin. They can range in price from £4.99 to £49.99, so what’s the difference? What makes base layers so special? Well, the first thing I always hear people say when they are giving advice on base layers is don’t wear cotton. But why? What is so bad about the material we wear most as a nation? Firstly, let’s look at what a base layer is supposed to do: it should wick the moisture away from your body and dry quickly when wet. The clothing on your skin should also act an an insulator when the air temperature is lower than your body temperature. With cotton, moisture collects in the fabric holes and stays wet. As a result, it will become heavy and make you cold. Despite this, some polar explorers used to swear by it, but ensuring it didn’t get wet. I guess they didn’t sweat much. Wool also fails to wick moisture away and traps sweat, but it is the only fabric which will still insulate when wet. Be warned though: it can retain over 35% of its dry weight in water! Merino wool, which is like regular sheep’s wool but without the itchiness, has come a long way though, and it is definitely my preference now. Silk is often used for base layers. It is obviously very comfortable, dries quickly, and is very thin. Silk base layers don’t always last that long and, to be honest, they can start to smell quite quickly. Before I dared talk to anyone about it, in my teenage years, I used to think I was allergic to it because it made me smell so bad. I tested this over a period of tough climbing days and the seamless design is incredibly comfortable. It doesn’t suffer from the odour problems that many base layers do, and it always seems to feel dry. If you’re into comfort, this could be the base layer for you. Smartwool Next to Skin (NTS) 150 Crew Aesthetics: 4 Comfort: 5 Durability: 4 Functionality: 5 Value for Money: 4 Total Score: 4.4 Smartwool is a brand name many people won’t yet have heard of, but they have produced a very snug fitting base layer that we tested in Russia. The base layer not only has 100% Merino wool, but also a UPF50+, which reduces the amount of UV rays the top will absorb. On top of this, they have added shoulder panels for extra comfort.
