Mr Howe, Headteacher, writes:
Today we marked the culmination of our remembrance events with a two-minute silence
in honour of the bravery and sacrifice made by so many people for our liberty. Other
remembrance events this week have included assemblies and RAISE activities led by Mr
Ivey examining the many contributions made by different minority groups who fought for
Britain and many activities to raise funds for Help for Heroes and the Poppy Appeal.
As always, this newsletter captures some of the many incredible achievements, collective
successes and personal triumphs that are part of every day life at Abbeywood Community School, and there are
numerous articles written by students inside. You will read about many creative, sporting, academic and personal
accomplishments — all of which represent our ‘RAISE’ values and total commitment to helping support each other
engage positively so our students continually develop into independent and resilient learners who have the highest
aspirations for their futures. The recent Year 9 ambitions event was a huge success and we are hugely looking
forward to welcoming all our Year 11 students to our Post 16 Open Evening event on 21 November, following the
Concorde Post 16 Open Evening on 10 November. Later in the year all our Year 10 students will participating in
work experience placements and we will, no doubt, be inundated again with reports from the employers about
how positively engaged, hard-working and focused our students have been. Year 7 students continue with their
PIXL Edge programme and many have now achieved their first personal or
community challenge - well done to you all!
We are also very excited about the FACS Fashion Show later this month on 25
November, and delighted to welcome you all to our Christmas Concert on the
14 December. Your support for these events is always hugely appreciated. I
am immensely proud of our charity work at Abbeywood Community School
and once again we are pleased to support the North Bristol Food Bank with
collections taking place this term.
Next week marks the national anti-bullying week and there are a variety of
activities to focus the whole school community on this very important
national issue. We continue to work tirelessly to identify and stamp out
bullying whenever and wherever it occurs.
Finally, many congratulations to Simon Hardy (Maths Leader of Learning) and
his wife Anna, on the birth of their daughter, Florence, born on 1 November,
weighing in at 7lbs 12oz.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
The Olympus Academy Trust Update: November 2016
Introducing the Trust’s support services:
Having introduced the Trust’s Headteachers and Executive Headteachers in previous updates, I would like to
introduce 2 key leaders this month who are responsible for ensuring that our support services function effectively
across 7 schools:
Julia Anwar is our Head of Business Operations and has worked within the Trust and previously at
Bradley Stoke Community School for nearly 10 years. Julia oversees our finances, which includes
an annual budget of approximately £20 million, and has a team of staff working with her to ensure
that we benefit from efficiency and combined purchasing power across 7 schools and also that we
are legally compliant in all that we do at all times. Julia oversees the budgets for the Trust and the
schools as well as managing procurement for significant contracts such as catering and cleaning
and managing projects such as the new primary phase building and the installation of solar panels
at Bradley Stoke Community School.
In contrast, Jodi Hallett has joined us as our Head of Human Resources in the last month from
a background in industry rather than education but brings a wealth of experience. Our staff
(approximately 550 people) account for the largest portion of our budget and are the people
who will ensure that our learners make the progress they need to whilst in our schools. Jodi
will oversee employment contracts, recruitment and appointment of staff as well as
performance management and support. This is a vital role if we are to fulfil our aspiration of
being an employer of choice in the local area.
Both Julia and Jodi have teams of staff with whom they work to be able to carry out their responsibilities. Each of
the secondary schools has a Business Manager and a lead member of staff for personnel because of the size of the
schools whereas we have a shared lead role for finance and a shared lead role for personnel between groups of our
primary schools to ensure that they can have the specialist input and support they need for these areas. The
purpose of working in the way that we do with central services provided by the Trust is to free Headteachers and
their senior staff to focus on teaching and learning in their schools rather than be distracted by overseeing all the
support functions. A challenge we face is having the capacity in place to support schools as they join the Trust with
the recent addition of our 3 new member schools as an example of needing more staff and expertise quickly!
Consultation about The Olympus Academy Trust Admissions Policy:
We are currently consulting about proposed changes to the Trust’s admissions policy for 2018, principally a change
to the over-subscription criteria. Please have a look at the details: OAT Admission Policy Consultation Information
and respond if you would like to.
The deadline for on time applications for secondary school places for next September has now passed but you can
apply for places in Reception for September 2017 until 15 th January 2017 – you need to apply to the local authority
in which you live which for most Olympus Academy Trust families will be South Gloucestershire Council – details
can be found here.
Thanks and best wishes,
Throughout this academic year, all students will
have a fortnightly focus in order to ‘raise the bar’.
This is in order to improve the atmosphere around the school, which will have a
positive impact on the learning of all students.
The focus for 31 October - 11 November has been to:

Hold a door open for someone
Try to do at least one other act of kindness and courtesy
each day
For the next fortnight (Monday 14 - Friday 25 November) the focus is to:
“Keep banned items out of sight - hand them over straight away when challenged”.
This means without argument or debate…
Managing Anxiety
Anxiety is a condition that can affect anyone and many
anxiety disorders begin in childhood and adolescence. With
nearly one in five young people experiencing high levels of
anxiety, early intervention can benefit. This toolkit has been
developed to help people understand these emotions, how
to manage them and when to ask for help. There is
information tailored for:
Conquering the Multitasking Brain Drain
Contrary to popular belief, multitasking interferes
with the quality of learning. These suggestions can
help students recognise that scattered focus isn't
their friend during homework time…..
Thursday 29 September was another successful open evening at Abbeywood
Community School. From shocking science shows, to moving musical performances
in the atrium, teachers and students of all talents came together to showcase all the
amazing work we do here at Abbeywood. It was certainly a very eventful and
thrilling evening!
Particular highlights from the evening included:
The Harry Potter themed Chemistry experiments, and mind blowing shows, which
had no shortage of spectators.
The never ending story that both children and adults alike wrote in English, written
on sugar paper almost as big as the department itself!
The laser cutter demonstration in Design Technology left visitors fascinated, and as an added bonus they each
received their very own personalised key ring.
The Art and Photography students helped children draw pictures of fruit, and take
rather funny portraits of themselves in the art department.
Overall it was a tremendous evening, with a focussed and electric atmosphere that
left staff, pupils and parents feeling incredibly proud.
Thank you to Mr Clarke!
Anti-Bullying Week 2016
Anti-Bullying week 2016 takes place on 14 to 18 November,
shining a spotlight on bullying and encouraging all children,
teachers and parents to take action against bullying
throughout the year. This years theme is 'Power for Good'
with the aim of supporting children and young people to
understand the ways in which they are powerful, and
encouraging individual and collective action to stop bullying
and create the best world possible.
Parent Governor Vacancy
We currently have one vacancy for a Parent Governor and four of our existing Parent
Governors reach the end of their current terms of office at the end of December.
Therefore we are seeking to elect five Parent Governors by the start of Term 3.
Existing governors will need to stand again and be re-elected if they wish to
continue.
Anyone who has parental responsibility for a student on the school roll can stand for
election.
If you would like to stand then please complete a nomination form, available from
Reception, or the form can be downloaded here. This must be returned to the School
Office for the attention of the returning officer, Mrs Catherine Thompson, no later
than 4:00 p.m. on Friday 25 November. If we receive more than five nominations
then a ballot will be held.
If you would like to know more about what being a School Governor entails, then
please contact our Chair Of Governors, Mrs Isabel Marsden, via the School Office
0117 307 5660.
We look forward to receiving your nominations.
Removal of Credit Charge Charges on Purchases
With effect from 11 November 2016 the credit card charge of 50p per transaction
will be removed when making purchases or payments to the school. If you require a
reminder of your login details to access the online payments system please contact
the finance office finance@abbeywoodschool.com.
New Cashless Catering System
From the start of Term 3 there will be a new cashless catering system which will
enable parents to credit lunch accounts on-line. It will also remove the need for
student catering cards as biometrics will be issued. An email will be going to all
parents in the next week explaining the new system and requesting approval for the
collection of biometric information. Your immediate response to the email would be
very much appreciated.
Weekend Lettings Caretaker
Vacancy
We are looking to recruit a Weekend
Lettings Caretaker to work as part of
our team to support and develop the
school as a community resource.
Closing date 18 November 2016.
For full details of all our vacancies are
available here.
Car Parking at end of School Day
Would all parents collecting their
children after school please park in the
overflow car park and not enter the
school premises (except those using the
disabled bays). The area at the front of
school has become congested with
many disabled bays being occupied
inappropriately as well as cars being
parked on double yellow lines. Coaches
and buses are therefore finding it
extremely difficult to manoeuvre with
these cars parked illegally. Please park
within the ACS overflow car park (not
the WISE campus or double yellow lines
on New Road) and wait for your child to
come to you. Your co-operation would
be much appreciated.
Thank you.
Brainteaser…….
Lockdown Procedure
Abbeywood, as are all the schools
with the Olympus Academy Trust, are
currently developing a lockdown
procedure. Once finalised, students
will be briefed and an exercise will be
carried out. Advance notice of the
exercise will be given to all students
and parents.
On Tuesday 18 October, our Year 9 Students
participated in the South West Ambitions Event at
the SGS Wise campus. This gave our students the
opportunity to speak and listen to a variety of
experts from different sectors of employment. By
attending this event, we feel that it helps our
students make effective decisions about their
futures.
The event is organised by SGS, South Gloucestershire
Council, UWE and works closely with 120 different
employers, universities, training providers and other
organisations who all contributed to the day.
Here are some photos of our staff and students
enjoying the event.
They will each receive a £5 Amazon Gift Token
We are Megan Eyres and Jasmine Ajaz, two year nine students who attend the Pauline Quirke Academy, a
performing arts academy that takes place every Saturday at Bradley Stoke Community School. For the
past year or so, since we started, we have been working towards the show we performed at The Bristol
Hippodrome on Sunday 4 September with PQA students from the Bradley Stoke and Bath academies
(some of whom are our classmates: Cerys Hilton, Eloise Smith-Ferrier) and many others.
We started PQA around September last year and instantly knew that we could never leave. PQA consists
of Musical Theatre (which is what the show was focused on), Comedy and Drama, Film and TV, with an
hour for each subject every Saturday afternoon (2-5 p.m.), and has 4 different age groups (Poppets,
Greens, Blues and Reds).
Between the two of us, we performed specific numbers from the musicals Grease,
Wicked and Hairspray in an assortment of show tunes named ‘The Sound of Musicals’. The
whole production was the best experience of our lives, and the first time we had ever done
anything like it (other than taking part in the Bristol Old Vic show earlier in the year).
As stressful and tiring as it was for everyone involved, singing and dancing and doing what
we love most on stage in front of almost a thousand people with our fellow students we have become such great friends with,
made us so grateful to have had this opportunity and we can only thank our PQA teachers, chaperones and supportive friends and
family for giving us a night to remember.
Thank you all!
Specialising in Humanities
Open evening success:
The humanities corridor was
full of students at our recent
Year 6 open evening. The
pictures show what is was like
before the students arrived as
teachers waited in
anticipation.
Highlights of the evening included a ‘how tall are you
compared to famous historical figures’, meanwhile in
Geography map skills and
local connections were
investigated. In Religious
Studies some balloon based
investigation took place with
students ‘bursting’ with
excitement at the thought of
coming to Abbeywood.
STAR STUDENT– Will Adjei 8R
Congratulations and thank you for all your hard work and effort so
far this term!
Love & Marriage!
Our GCSE Religious Studies topic of Relationships is raising a few
eyebrows again as students look at a range of issues to do with
relationships such as contraception, marriage and sex. A whole
host of questions always arise around such issues but as always
our students respond with brilliant maturity and excellent
engagement. If students do have any questions then please feel
free to direct them to their teacher who will do their best to
answer their queries!
Quote of the week:
“Science without religion is lame, religion without science is
blind” Albert Einstein
Mr Ivey
Tell us about yourself:
My name is Tom Ivey and I am the Head of Humanities
which involves working with the wonderful students and
staff who go to lessons in History, Geography, Religious
Studies, Sociology, Business Studies, Psychology, Law and
Financial Studies. I am also a teacher of History to
students in Years 7 to 11.
Why did you want to be a teacher?
I had a really positive experience when I was at school,
particularly at Sixth Form. I was fortunate enough to be
given the responsibility of being Head Boy. Family and
friends often said “you should become a teacher” and so I
gave it a go and loved it. I also had a couple of
inspirational teachers who made me want to be like them
– a brilliant English teacher and a superb History teacher.
What is the best bit of working at ACS?
The people. I work with some amazing people who
provide a mixture of professionalism and jollity that makes
coming to work so enjoyable. More than this though it is
the students. Being thanked at the end of a lesson is still
one of the best feelings I have experienced. Watching a
student finally “get it” is up there too!
What is your favourite period of history and why?
That is a tough one as there are so many to choose
from! My favourite period to teach about is the Middle
Ages because it was such an important period that shaped
the country and world we live in today. My favourite
period to learn about is the second half of the 20th
Century, in particular the Cold War. I am going to be
teaching about this at GCSE next year and I am really
enjoying finding out about all the political and military
conflicts that shaped the period.
Favourite film
It does depend on my mood but I can watch The
Shawshank Redemption again and again and again!
Favourite book
I am not a massive reader of books (I can read, I promise)
but prefer newspapers and current affairs. However, one
book that has “stuck with me” was The Secret History by
Donna Tartt.
Something we may not know
I support Arsenal. My favourite colour is pink. I love
stationary, in particular coloured biros. My favourite thing
that happens in my classroom is when all the students put
their bags in the cubby holes, without being asked! I play
football (centre midfield). I think one of the best and
easiest things you can do is smile and say hello. And I like
crisps.
On Tuesday 8 November Abbeywood under 14s girls football team travelled
to Wootton Bassett to play round 3 of the National Football Cup.
Abbeywood started well and dominated the first part of the game. Some
excellent passing ensured the ball fell nicely to Kiera Beck who confidently put
the ball in the back of the net. 1-0 Abbeywood. Shortly after, a nice attack
from Zoe Jones, resulted in 2-0 Abbeywood. Wootton Bassett then picked up
their game and began to challenge us. Half time came with the score
Abbeywood 2 - 1 Wootton Bassett.
The whistle blew to start the second half. Abbeywood dominated putting
Wootton Bassett on the back foot early on. An excellent through ball from
Daisy Ackerman set Zoe Jones up for her second goal, 3-1 to Abbeywood!
Abbeywood kept the pressure up and with some superb defensive play from
Paulina and Abby, Wootton Bassett struggled to hit the target. Excellent play
in midfield from Olivia, Maisie and Megan to play the ball through to Zoe, who
kept her composure and hit her hat-trick, 4-1 to Abbeywood!! Wootton Bassett
continued to fight back to challenge us and scored a well deserved goal. 4-
2 to Abbeywood. Some superb goal keeping by Annabelle Thomas prevented a
third! Abbeywood continued to fight all the way until the end and won
convincingly. Final score, Abbeywood 5 - 3 Wootton Bassett.
Year 9 Boys – English School Football Association Playstation Cup
Round 2 – Abbeywood Vs Norton Hill
The boys have started the year with a bang! After getting a bye through to round 2 they played Norton Hill School, Bath.
This match started off a little slow but after Kinsly Murray scored, the boys relaxed and started playing their brand of
football; passing and moving, letting the ball do the work was too much for Norton Hill School and so the Abbeywood Year
9 boys won by 10 – 1.
Man of the Match – Kinsly Murray
Round 3 – Gordano Vs Abbeywood
This match was a match up that both school hoped would happen later into the competition. Gordano School, North
Somerset have a great footballing set up which means a lot of the boys are playing at a good level of football, but this
didn’t faze our boys. After a defensive masterclass from both sides, Abbeywood got the break through with Kinsly Murray
running through to score and then Harvey Lawrence scoring after great work down the right from Ryan Jefferies. Gordano
got a penalty but their captain missed, they recovered and got a goal back after an own goal. At half time, changes were
made so to relieve the pressure on the defence and with that, the team looked more in control. But against the run of play,
they scored a goal from 30 yards. This gave Gordano added hope so they went on the front foot and attacked Abbeywood
with everything but after soaking up the pressure Abbeywood got the ball and went on the attack themselves. Jonny Mead
passed the ball out to Ryan Jefferies who attacked the space down the right and crossed it and the ball was met by Joe
Budd, who placed it into the bottom corner.
3-2 win to Abbeywood
Man of the Match – Joe Budd
Norovirus season
Ahead of the approaching norovirus season, to reduce the spread of norovirus, children with symptoms of norovirus
should:

Stay away from school until they have been free of symptoms for at least 48 hours and avoid contact with others
were possible.
Keep hydrated by drinking fluids as tolerated.
If symptoms persist (more than 48 hours), phone the GP or the NHS non-emergency number 111 for advice.
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water regularly but particularly after toilet visits and before eating and
handling food. Alcohol hand gel is not effective against norovirus.
Do not visit friends or relatives in hospital or residential care homes as there is a real risk of introducing the
infection to the establishment.
that more and more people are using food
banks
•Half a million people are reliant on food banks
to help them feed themselves and their
families
Remembrance Day—11 November 2016
Remembrance is part of modern British life, culture and heritage. It becomes a particular feature of
the public calendar each year when public, private, formal and informal Remembrance events take
place throughout the UK.
The History of the Poppy
During the First World War (1914–1918) much of the fighting took place in Western Europe. Previously beautiful
countryside was blasted, bombed and fought over, again and again. The landscape swiftly turned to fields of mud:
bleak and barren scenes where little or nothing could grow.
Bright red Flanders poppies (Papaver rhoeas) however, were delicate but resilient flowers and grew in their thousands,
flourishing even in the middle of chaos and destruction. In early May 1915, shortly after losing a friend in
Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lt Col John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies to write a now famous poem
called 'In Flanders Fields'.
McCrae’s poem inspired an American academic, Moina Michael, to make and sell red silk poppies which were
brought to England by a French woman, Anna Guérin. The (Royal) British Legion, formed in 1921, ordered 9 million
of these poppies and sold them on 11 November that year. The poppies sold out almost immediately and that first
ever 'Poppy Appeal' raised over £106,000; a considerable amount of money at the time. This was used to help WW1
veterans with employment and housing.
The following year, Major George Howson set up the Poppy Factory to employ disabled ex-Servicemen. Today, the
factory and the Legion's warehouse in Aylesford produces millions of poppies each year.
The demand for poppies in England was so high that few were reaching Scotland. Earl Haig's
wife established the 'Lady Haig Poppy Factory' in Edinburgh in 1926 to produce poppies exclusively
for Scotland. Over 5 million Scottish poppies (which have four petals and no leaf unlike
poppies in the rest of the UK) are still made by hand by disabled ex-Servicemen at Lady Haig's
Poppy Factory each year and distributed by our sister charity Poppyscotland.
