On Tuesday 8 November Abbeywood under 14s girls football team travelled to Wootton Bassett to play round 3 of the National Football Cup. Abbeywood started well and dominated the first part of the game. Some excellent passing ensured the ball fell nicely to Kiera Beck who confidently put the ball in the back of the net. 1-0 Abbeywood. Shortly after, a nice attack from Zoe Jones, resulted in 2-0 Abbeywood. Wootton Bassett then picked up their game and began to challenge us. Half time came with the score Abbeywood 2 - 1 Wootton Bassett. The whistle blew to start the second half. Abbeywood dominated putting Wootton Bassett on the back foot early on. An excellent through ball from Daisy Ackerman set Zoe Jones up for her second goal, 3-1 to Abbeywood! Abbeywood kept the pressure up and with some superb defensive play from Paulina and Abby, Wootton Bassett struggled to hit the target. Excellent play in midfield from Olivia, Maisie and Megan to play the ball through to Zoe, who kept her composure and hit her hat-trick, 4-1 to Abbeywood!! Wootton Bassett continued to fight back to challenge us and scored a well deserved goal. 4- 2 to Abbeywood. Some superb goal keeping by Annabelle Thomas prevented a third! Abbeywood continued to fight all the way until the end and won convincingly. Final score, Abbeywood 5 - 3 Wootton Bassett. Well done girls! On to round 4 we go! Year 9 Boys – English School Football Association Playstation Cup Round 2 – Abbeywood Vs Norton Hill The boys have started the year with a bang! After getting a bye through to round 2 they played Norton Hill School, Bath. This match started off a little slow but after Kinsly Murray scored, the boys relaxed and started playing their brand of football; passing and moving, letting the ball do the work was too much for Norton Hill School and so the Abbeywood Year 9 boys won by 10 – 1. Man of the Match – Kinsly Murray Round 3 – Gordano Vs Abbeywood This match was a match up that both school hoped would happen later into the competition. Gordano School, North Somerset have a great footballing set up which means a lot of the boys are playing at a good level of football, but this didn’t faze our boys. After a defensive masterclass from both sides, Abbeywood got the break through with Kinsly Murray running through to score and then Harvey Lawrence scoring after great work down the right from Ryan Jefferies. Gordano got a penalty but their captain missed, they recovered and got a goal back after an own goal. At half time, changes were made so to relieve the pressure on the defence and with that, the team looked more in control. But against the run of play, they scored a goal from 30 yards. This gave Gordano added hope so they went on the front foot and attacked Abbeywood with everything but after soaking up the pressure Abbeywood got the ball and went on the attack themselves. Jonny Mead passed the ball out to Ryan Jefferies who attacked the space down the right and crossed it and the ball was met by Joe Budd, who placed it into the bottom corner. 3-2 win to Abbeywood Man of the Match – Joe Budd When? 1 December 2016, 11:00 – 16:00 Where?
