After an exciting first phase, the
fourth season of Bangladesh
Premier League shifts to
Chittagong from tomorrow. Here
are the important events from the
13 exciting games of the first phase
that started last week. PAGE 25
If Andy Murray was grateful to
Marin Cilic for facilitating his
rise to the summit this month it
was not evident as he added the
Croatian to his lengthening list
of victims at the ATP World Tour
Finals on Monday. PAGE 27
Locals dominate first phase
• Mazhar Uddin
The local players dominated the
first phase of the fourth edition
of Bangladesh Premier League as
Dhaka Dynamites, Barisal Bulls
and Khulna Titans jointly lead
the points table having three wins
from four matches. The tournament
shifts to Chittagong from
Thursday.
Holders Comilla Victorians had
the worst possible start where
Mahsrafe bin Mortaza and his
troop were totally out of track
losing all the four games so far.
Similarly, despite captain Tamim
Iqbal’s good form with the bat
Chittagong Vikings struggled and
managed to win only one game
out of their four attempts.
On the other hand, Naeem Islam’s
Rangpur Riders started with
a bang winning their first two
games then lost to Dhaka convincingly
before went down to
Rajshahi Kings who managed to
win a game in three matches will
look to step up the gas in the coming
days.
MOST RUNS
Shakib al Hasan’s star studded
Dhaka who lose to Rajshahi on
their second game have played
clinical cricket after that and
outplayed Rangpur and Comilla
one-sided affairs.
Mushfiqur Rahim’s Barisal also
regrouped as a unit after losing
their first game against Dhaka.
They came back hard and won
their next three games where they
managed to chase high scores successfully
in the second innings.
Khulna perhaps produced the
most number of exciting matches
in the going fourth edition of the
tournament where their skipper
Mahmudullah’s last over heroics
with the ball helped his side to
share top of the table despite being
bundled out on 44 the lowest
ever total in BPL history against
Rangpur on their second game.
Moving on to the individual
performance the fourth edition of
the money-spinning tournament
have seen the local players putting
their hands up and leading
the highest run getter and wicket
takers tally.
Player Inns Runs HS Ave SR 100 50
Shahriar Nafees (BB) 4 184 65 61.33 133.33 0 3
Mushfiqur Rahim (BB) 4 174 81* 174.00 151.30 0 2
Tamim Iqbal (CHV) 4 143 75 35.75 128.82 0 2
Former vice-captain of Bangladesh
Shahriar Nafees has been impressive
for Barisal is the highest
run scorer in the tournament so
far with 184 runs in four matches
at an average of 61.33 including
three fifties and the stylish left
hander will look to continue his
brilliant run and try to make a
comeback in the national team.
Tigers Test skipper and the
only batsman in the history of BPL
to reach thousand runs Mushfiqur
Rahim once again contributed
with the bat who is ten runs behind
Nafees at the second place
with 174 runs with two half centuries.
Dhaka’s opening batsman Mehedi
Maruf impressed with his big
hitting ability scored 170 behind
Mushfiq including two fifties at a
staggering strike rate of 154.54.
Pacer Shafiul Islam leads the
highest wicket takers list with
eight scalps with the best bowling
figure of 4/28 against Chittagong
to snatch a tight three run win
for Khulna where the Tigers fast
bowler bowled brilliantly along
with Mahmudullah.
Mohammad Shahid also leads
the chart alongside Shafiul with
eight wickets from four matches
including the best bowling figure
of 3/21 on their opening encounter
of the tournament against Barisal.
However rain and pitch has
been the center of all and after
the restart of the tournament due
to weather the Sher-e-Bangla National
stadium’s wicket provided
couple of low scoring games before
it changed in the latter part
of the first phase with the highest
total of 194/5 by Dhaka against
Comilla.•
