'I don't know.' The problem did not bo<strong>the</strong>r her. I must be a little like him, she thought; I won't let<br />
certa<strong>in</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs worry me no matter how important <strong>the</strong>y are. 'Maybe I'll go back to my husband,<br />
Frank. I tried to phone him tonight; I might try aga<strong>in</strong>. I'll see how I feel later on.'<br />
'Despite what you did for us, or what you say you did — '<br />
'You wish I had never come <strong>in</strong>to this house,' Juliana said.<br />
'if you saved Hawthorne's life it's dreadful of me, but I'm so upset; I can't take it all <strong>in</strong>, what<br />
you've said and Hawthorne has said.'<br />
'How strange,' Juliana said. 'I never would have thought <strong>the</strong> truth would make you angry.' Truth,<br />
she thought. As terrible as death. But harder to f<strong>in</strong>d. I'm lucky. 'I thought you'd be as pleased and<br />
excited as I am. It's a misunderstand<strong>in</strong>g, isn't it?' She smiled, and after a pause Mrs. Abendsen<br />
<strong>man</strong>aged to smile back. 'Well, good night anyhow.'<br />
A moment later, Juliana was retrac<strong>in</strong>g her steps back down <strong>the</strong> flagstone path, <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> patches of<br />
light from <strong>the</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g room and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> shadows beyond <strong>the</strong> lawn of <strong>the</strong> house, onto <strong>the</strong> black<br />
sidewalk.<br />
She walked on without look<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong> at <strong>the</strong> Abendsen house and, as she walked, search<strong>in</strong>g up<br />
and down <strong>the</strong> streets for a cab or a car, mov<strong>in</strong>g and bright and liv<strong>in</strong>g, to take her back to her motel.
