Honorable Baron L. B. Kaelemakule. The Foreign Office had called an extraord<strong>in</strong>ary session at <strong>the</strong><br />

embassy build<strong>in</strong>g on Sutter Street, and each Trade Mission was to send a <strong>high</strong>ly placed personage<br />

to attend. In this case, it meant Mr. Tagomi himself.<br />

There was no time to change clo<strong>the</strong>s. Mr. Tagomi hurried to <strong>the</strong> express elevator, descended to<br />

<strong>the</strong> ground floor, and a moment later was on his way by Mission limous<strong>in</strong>e, a black 1940 Cadillac<br />

driven by an experienced uniformed Ch<strong>in</strong>ese chauffeur.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> embassy build<strong>in</strong>g he found o<strong>the</strong>r dignitaries' cars parked roundabout, a dozen <strong>in</strong> all.<br />

Highly placed worthies, some of whom he knew, some of whom were strangers to him, could be<br />

seen ascend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> wide steps of <strong>the</strong> embassy build<strong>in</strong>g, fil<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>in</strong>side. Mr. Tagomi's chauffeur<br />

held <strong>the</strong> door open, and he stepped out quickly, gripp<strong>in</strong>g his briefcase, it was empty, because he<br />

had no papers to br<strong>in</strong>g — but it was essential to avoid appearance of be<strong>in</strong>g mere spectator. He<br />

strode up <strong>the</strong> steps <strong>in</strong> a <strong>man</strong>ner suggest<strong>in</strong>g a vital role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> happen<strong>in</strong>gs, although actually he had<br />

not even been told what this meet<strong>in</strong>g would cover.<br />

Small knots of personages had ga<strong>the</strong>red; murmured discussions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lobby. Mr. Tagomi jo<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

several <strong>in</strong>dividuals whom he knew, nodd<strong>in</strong>g his head and look<strong>in</strong>g — with <strong>the</strong>m — solemn.<br />

An embassy employee appeared presently and directed <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to a large hall. Chairs setup,<br />

fold<strong>in</strong>g type. All persons filed <strong>in</strong>, seated <strong>the</strong>mselves silently except for cough<strong>in</strong>g and shuffl<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
