At a recent tourism event in Ethiopia, the general manager of the hotel association, Ruth Luda, announced that they had approached the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture and Tourism and other organisations in this regard. While travel warnings for Ethiopia were <strong>issue</strong>d in some countries, it does not apply to Addis Ababa. But travellers are still concerned that, for example, international insurance companies will not cover them when travelling to Ethiopia. Source: CitiFM, Ghana South Africa - Wine and food tourism experts talk growth More tourists were interested in sharing their experiences of South Africa’s wine and food tourism industry, delegates heard at the Business of Wine and Food Tourism Conference. It is planned for the gathering to become an annual event. Research undertaken by the Western Cape’s destination marketing, investment and trade promotion agency, Wesgro, found that 86% of tourists wanted to sample local wines and food. Source: Destinate / Brand South Africa South Africa Tourism Minister engages with industry The Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) is working to address the persisting challenges that the travel and tourism industry faces with the implementation of the Amended Immigration Regulations. The specific challenges faced by the industry are with the unintended consequences of biometric data capturing for international visitors into the country and the continued requirement of unabridged birth certificates for minors under the age of 18 traveling into the country. Other pressing concerns are on the requirement for accommodation establishments to make and keep copies of the IDs of their guests upon checking in. TBCSA presented a number of recommendations to address challenges during a meeting of the National Tourism Minister with Captains of Industry on the 9th of November 2016. The meeting was held within the context of Cabinet’s economic boosting initiative program that was initiated earlier this year and involves engaging the private sector in the various sectors of the economy to come up with strategies to stimulate economic growth. For travel and tourism, this process of engagement has led to the formation of five work streams, whose main task is to identify quick-win initiatives to increase the sector’s contribution to economic growth and job creation.
