By Stef Terblanche Valley of Desolation, Great Karoo Charmaine A Harvey- Shutterstock The Valley of Desolation… SA’s Karoo Jurassic Park, with a natural mountain cathedral as well Drive the 135km from Beaufort-West to Aberdeen through this desolate but beautiful stretch of Karoo, often without seeing another car or human for many kilometres as you pass over this pre-dinosaur graveyard; see the veld vibrantly changing in a flame of colour as the sun goes down; enjoy a sumptuous meal of Karoo lamb chops in old-worldly Aberdeen; explore the fascinating history of Graaff-Reinet with its whitewashed Cape Dutch buildings, an erstwhile centre of political tumult, rebellion, men of God, freedom struggles, and still a place of culture; then ascend to the 200-million years old Cathedral of the Mountains, a natural national monument in the Camdeboo National Park, for breathtakingly spectacular views… Leaving Beaufort-West for Aberdeen, the road stretches ahead in a straight line that narrows to a pin point in the very far distance, and stays like that for 135km as you drive through one of the great natural wonders of the world formed millions of years ago. But the landscape on either side can change dramatically as you drive along: the almost white-washed yellow grass veld, dotted with multi-coloured shrubs and other flora, will turn to gold and almost red as the sun moves across it and goes down. Small rocky outcrops soon make way for large mountains. It’s a hot and arid semi-desert land, making it hard to imagine that 320-million years ago this was part of today’s South Pole, before continental drift created Africa and the Karoo became an inland sea that later turned into swamps, rivers, lush vegetation and hordes of 48 |ISSUE 4|www.mzanzitravel.co.za | MZANZI TRAVEL
