Bloukrans Bridge, highest bungee jump
but will still provide you with enough of an adrenalin thrill because
of the sheer height, without having to do the death-defying, heartstopping
jump. But do take note all ye fainthearted ones, according
to Wikipedia one Mohr Keet set a Guinness World Record as the
oldest person to jump from Bloukrans Bridge on 6 April 2010 at the
energetic age of 96! Celebrities like Prince Harry, former President
Thabo Mbeki, world surfing champ Kelly Slater, and former Springbok
rugby player Bob Skinstad have all been spotted on the bridge, but
whether they all jumped, we don’t know.
The Bloukrans Bridge bungee jump is operated as a sustainable
tourism venture, with the operators, Face Adrenalin, employing
60 people from the neighbouring communities of Coldstream,
Thornham, Storms River, Covie, and The Crags. There is also a
delightful pub and restaurant on the cliff overlooking all the action.
Looking for some more action? Hop over to Nature’s Valley about
6km away and engage kayaking up the river, tubing down the river,
zip-lining, and horse riding. A short distance to the east, at Storms
River Village, you can do the treetop canopy tour through a part of
the Tsitsikamma forest. Or you can hike in the Garden Route National
Park, which includes the Tsitsikamma. At Storms River Mouth you
can again paddle upriver, swim in the wild sea, jump off cliffs into the
water, cross the suspension bridge and do the hike to the top of the
hill, and much more.
Of course the river mouth is also the starting point of the worldfamous
Otter Trail which ends at Nature’s Valley. Other attractions
in the vicinity include an elephant sanctuary, Birds of Eden,
Monkeyland, the Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre, and various
private nature reserves. Accommodation is plentiful over this entire
region, with SANParks operating some particularly delightful cabins,
chalets and camping sites.
