newsletter
Winter 2016
Welcome to our Christmas newsletter. Inside you will find lots of information about the
great range of activities that have taken please this term.
We started the term celebrating a fantastic set of examination results for both GCSE and
A Level and set the ambition to continue to improve what we do again this year. We also
welcomed 190 Year 7 students to the academy and I have been delighted with the start
that they have made and was genuinely humbled by their Transition Celebration Evening in
September. There are many changes we have had to embrace from national policy changes:
curriculum reforms, changes in assessment systems and the way in which school performance
is measured and judged. These national changes impact on us all and I am very pleased with
the way that our staff and pupils have responded. We are part of a successful local Trust
and the collaboration of professionals across our Trust helps us to formulate shared ideas
and strategies on how to respond best. Examples of this include the new grading for GCSE
subjects and the end of national curriculum levels in Year 7, which has seen us introduce the
new ‘banding’ assessment model.
I have been delighted with the support of parents at the parent information evenings held in
September and October where many of these changes were explained as well as providing
further information on the importance of memory skills in the new world of linear assessment
with no coursework at the end of GCSE studies. Please do anything you can at home to
try and test your child’s memory skills and identifying what helps them best to learn and
remember things. Information about these events and resources to support memory and
recall skills are on our website. I would like to thank all parents who have attended the Tutor
Review meetings this term and all who took time to give a response to the parent survey. Your
response gave us a very positive feel for the work that we do and also identified further areas
for development which we will continue to focus on. During the parent evenings in the Spring
Term, we shall have a set of laptops available which we would like to ask anyone who has not
yet taken the survey to take five minutes to complete it. The bigger sample we receive the
more helpful it is to us. You can see the results from the survey to date on our website in the
parent feedback section.
I would like to thank all of the staff and pupils who have contributed to our fantastic academy
this term. Whilst I do not like to single out individuals in an introduction such as this, I do
feel that I have to publically thank all of the performing arts staff and their helpers for the
massive commitment and success of the ‘Back to the 80’s’ performances. This is our first full
scale performance and builds on the wonderful Christmas showcase of last year. I hope that
everyone who was able to see it thoroughly enjoyed their evening, some with nostalgia about
a bygone age and others simply in awe of the fashions and sounds of a classic era. Well done
to Mr Harris, Miss Jones and Mrs Moroziuk for their energy, commitment and skill in putting
together a fabulous event. I wish you a very merry Christmas and look forward to welcoming
all pupils back to the academy in January for what I am positive will be another highly
successful and exciting year for our academy.
Accelerated Reader
Wow! What an absolutely outstanding start to Accelerated Reader for this academic
year. For the first time we have both Year 7 and Year 8 taking part with a small group
of students in both years 9 and 11. I have been blown away by the dedication and
determination of the students wanting to hit their target points, be the winning house
in their lessons and the number of students quizzing outside of their designated one
hour weekly lesson. At the time of writing we already have four word millionaires and
I’m sure by the time you read this there will be many many more.
A special mention must go to the fantastic four:
Eryn Wilcox 8Y1
Jadzia Armstrong 8Y1
David Proudlove 8X1
Joel Gamba 7Y1
Joel was our first student in Year 7 to become a word millionaire and he has already set
his sights on beating Eryn’s record from last year of 5,795,882 words – he has decided
that he wants to read a minimum of 6,000,000 words so watch this space!
When Eryn became our first millionaire we had an amazing response on twitter – we
actually received a reply from the author of the books that he was reading!
Ms Georgeson
Debate Mate
This half term sees the second year of Debate Mate working with The Carlton
Academy to run an excellent debating club. Mentors from the University of
Nottingham work with the pupils to develop skills in public speaking, quick
thinking, structuring arguments, close listening, building confidence, and most
importantly, respect. Participants learn how to express themselves clearly, and
with assurance, and how to engage in a team debate. We are currently preparing
for the first round of the Urban Debate mate League, which will be hosted here
at the TCA next January! So far we have a strong team, but there are still spaces
available for any would be solicitors, politicians, budding teachers, or anyone else
who wants to build confidence in presenting, and talking in front of people.
The club takes place in the Library every Tuesday, from 3.10-4.10, with snacks
provided. It is available to all pupils from Years 7-10.
Mr Yeadon
DEAR Time - Drop Everything And Read
There have been two key changes to DEAR time this year.
Year 7 & 8
Students in Years 7 & 8 have been taking part in the new DEAR time rolling
programme. This year, students are expected to have a reading book with them
at all times. In a different lesson each week, students (and teachers!) drop
everything and read their selected book for 15 minutes. So far, students have
dropped everything and read in Science, Drama, PE and Maths!
Tutor Time
All students read once a week during tutor time. However, this year, instead
of reading individually, students have been reading and exploring a number of
different short stories as a whole tutor group. In honour of Roald Dahl Day
on 13th September, we have started off the year with reading a number of his
short stories. The changes made have been well received with some fantastic
discussions taking place during tutor time.
Mrs Wardley
Asthma and Crutches
Asthma: A reminder to all parents about any students who suffer with Asthmawe
require a spare in date inhaler to keep in first aid for any emergency use. An
asthma action plan must be completed, which usually takes 5 minutes.
Crutches: If your child sustains any injury that results in crutches we must be
notified. A risk assessment will be completed to ensure the safety of your child
during the school day before returning to school.
If you have any questions regarding either of this issues please contact Mrs
Banning in Student Reception.
Sixth Form
National Citizenship Service
A number of Year 12 and 13 students have taken part in the National Citizenship
Service Program this term, including a residential trip over the October half term. This
has been a fantastic opportunity to develop skills and take part in activities with other
young people from around the UK. As a result of their enthusiasm and commitment to
the programme, many of the students have been invited to attend a special event at the
Houses of Parliament in London on Thursday 12th January 2017 to celebrate the social
impact that the programme has had. Well done to Demi-Louise Walters, Ella Hopcroft,
Charlie Goodman and Ben Harwood.
Borneo
Three of our Year 12 students (Ben Brooks, Aimee Richards and Harry Plumridge) are
currently fundraising for a Camps International Expedition to the Borneo Jungle in
summer 2017. The students have to raise £4000 each to join the four week humanitarian
project where they will teach local children and help improve conservation for
endangered orangutans. If you would like to donate or offer support to these students
undertaking this fantastic project, please contact the Sixth Form – 0115 940 8399.
Applications for Sixth Form 2017
Year 11 students took part in a Sixth Form Taster Day on Wednesday 1st November
where they got the opportunity to try our wide curriculum offer at Post-16. For some
subjects, such as Psychology and Sociology, this provided students with their first
opportunity to experience these courses. We also welcomed visitors from both the
Nottingham Trent University outreach team and Cambridge University who spoke to
students about the importance of A Level choices and future careers. The feedback
from the day was fantastic and provided students with the opportunity to think carefully
about which subjects they wish to study in Sixth Form. The Open Evening, which was
held on the same day, also gave parents and students the chance to speak to teachers
about future courses.
Applications for our Sixth Form are available from Student Reception and Mrs Sharpe
will start interviewing all students who apply in the spring term. If you have any questions
about Sixth Form applications, please contact Miss Whitchurch on 0115 940 8399.
In the Frame!
We recently had fun with an inflatable picture
frame at Year 7 book club! We took lots of pictures
of students with their favourite books and then
put some of them on Twitter. We had an amazing
response from the authors– we got a ‘like’ from
David Walliams and some personal responses
from Christopher Edge,
Chris D’Lacey, Narinder
Dhami and this year’s
Carnegie Award winner
Sarah Crossan – who
not only replied to our
tweets but also sent the girls a personalised
signed poster of their favourite book.
Miss Georgeson
Library Lunch Clubs
Don’t forget that there are lots of clubs taking
place in the library at lunch time. Games club is
incredibly popular with lots of students coming
along to play Top Trumps, Chess, Scrabble and
lots more!
It’s standing room only at Manga Mania so get
here quick – so far this term we have watched
Howl’s Moving Castle, some episodes from
Fairy Tale and we have now started to watch
Spirited Away. Year 7 Book Club has over 40
students each week taking part in lots of fun
activities. They have already contributed to
displays both inside and outside the library, had
many themed weeks including an unforgettable
one about Harry Potter! Recently they got to be the first ones to
borrow the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book Double Down on the day of
publication. The Year 8 Focus Group are currently working on some new
ideas for World Book Day 2017 as well as being a fantastic sounding board
for new ideas and initiatives within the library.
Design and Technology
Students studying the new GCSE in Design
and Technology have made a great start to
their course producing some amazing design
work and great development prototypes in
a range of materials. Mr Mears would like to
congratulate them on their hard work so far
this year which will really set them up for Year
10 and 11.
Special mentions to William Moody, Beth
Lawman, Jack George, Charlie Dean, and Sean
Brimacombe for some outstanding design and
development work.
Food Technology GCSE - Development success
Mrs Davies would like to congratulate her Year
11’s on their development work towards their
GCSE final cook. Well done to Rhys Harrison
for the development of ice cream and John-
Jo ward for developing Semi-freddo an Italian
dessert.
A Level
It has been another great start for our A level
courses who are producing some excellent
design and modelling work as our Key Stage 5
offer continues to grow.
Special mentions to Chloe Bond in Year 12 and
Alex Thompson in Year 13
Mr Mears
Geography
Year 7 students have enjoyed learning about the weather with Miss Pollard
recently. Students researched, designed and built their own weather instruments,
including wind vanes, rain gauge anemometers and even a working barometer!
Year 11 geographers have begun to knuckle down in preparation for the summer
exams and Years 9 and 12 have both made a good start to their GCSE and AS
courses respectively.
Mr Youmans has joined the department this
year as a School Direct Trainee, his favourite
geography topics are conservationism and fuel
resources. Miss Ball went to the Jurassic Coast
during the half term holiday and visited as many
of the GCSE coastal case study sites as she
could, including Lulworth Cove.
Geography club has proved very successful and
members have enjoyed playing geography games,
making fossil casts, treasure maps, geography bookmarks and much more. Soon
we will be growing crystals and throwing down gauntlet for location challenges.
ICT and Business
The Real Business Challenge is a national
competition set by Coca-Cola for students
who are in Year 9. This year the challenge was
supporting Special Olympics Great Britain, a
fantastic charity that works to provide yearround
sports training and athletic competition
in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children
and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Students were asked to come up with a
new juice drink brand that had clear health
benefits, was sustainable and had great commercial proposition. Students needed to
present their idea in no more than 10 slides. The entries flooded in and after careful
consideration Team Blueish Skies triumphed with their fresh fruity combination. The
Team comprised of Charlotte Etches, Sophie Hand, Trinity Hargreaves, Mahwash Jabeen
and Bethany Payne with a couple of extra classmates helping out when and where
necessary.
Coca Cola will now look at the entries in Nottinghamshire and the best ideas will be
invited to a final where they will be given the chance to work with Coca Cola and
Special Olympics Great Britain on a live project. There is a chance to win some great
prizes along the way and we wish our girls the very best of luck!
Mr Harper
Science
In October pupils and colleagues from our feeder primary schools
visited The Carlton Academy for the annual Year 6 Science Day.
The day runs every year and is always a big success with the
primary pupils really enjoying the opportunity to carry out hands
on science practicals in a science laboratory. The teachers seemed
to enjoy using Bunsen Burners too!
We started by investigating ‘how do fireworks get their different
colours?’ To work this out, we used Bunsen Burners and carried
out flame tests using salts of different metals to find out what
colour flame they give, just in time for bonfire night! After this, we explored how to
design an aerodynamic rocket. We designed and made rockets, before launching them
across the front of school, in a big competition involving students from each of the
schools. Everyone involved had a fantastic time. It was a great opportunity for the
primary pupils to experience Science at The Carlton Academy and get to know their
future teachers, before starting in September 2017 as future scientists.
Miss Molloy
MFL News
Language Leaders
MFL Year 11 Language Leaders are working hard towards their next project – a
cultural activity to be held in the spring term with Year 7 students. This year’s plans
are particularly imaginative with Jed Brandreth, Ellie Fretwell, Charlotte Rowley and
Donnie McCabe opening a “pop up” Spanish café. In addition, Lydia Proudlove, Amaia
Roberston Nogues and Theone Ellis have been busy planning and constructing a
recreation of the beginning of the French Revolution – this is top secret but it does
involve an awful lot of boxes and grey paint!
Japanese Challenge
Miss Delgado is now organising the team for this annual regional challenge. A Year 9
team will be selected to represent The Carlton Academy in March 2017 to go to Toot
Hill School in Bingham for the “Journey of Japan” event and if past performance is
anything to go by, we should do very well.
Mrs Shreeve
Music News
It has been a very busy term for the Music department starting back in September when
the whole of Year 7 performed to friends and family on an evening that celebrated their
transition into secondary school. With only a couple of Music lessons to their names the
190 Year 7’s were set the challenge of learning and perfecting the singing of the Andrew
Sister’s 1940’s hit song ‘The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy’. This creative process started
way back in July when Mrs Moroziuk visited most of our feeder schools to deliver a fun
filled ‘World War’ themed music session to the then Year 6 students. The performance
night was a great success and it was thrilling to see the real musical potential of our
youngest students on stage. A much deserved ‘thank you and well done’ is extended to
all of those pupils and parents who supported this wonderful event.
This term has seen the formation of the four academy House Bands and all have been
regularly rehearsing and are now starting to put some of their own material together.
Next term we will be hosting a ‘Battle of the Bands’ event where the groups will be
working towards the prestigious title of ‘House Band of the Year’ award. (Dates and
times to be announced nearer the time)
Finally, there have been rehearsals galore for all of our various musical ensemble
groups across the department and, in particular, there has been a particular focus on
preparing for the upcoming production ‘Back to the 80’s’. We have all had such great fun
rehearsing a number of the incredibly cheesy 80’s pop songs for this musical that will
be performed on Wednesday 14th – Friday 16th December. Tickets are available from
student reception at £4 and £3 for concessions and this really should be a superbly
entertaining evening!
Mrs Moroziuk
Performing Arts
Following the great success of our Year 7 introduction
performance, which saw a staggering 80 percent of the cohort
participate in a ‘War’ themed show, we are now preparing for
our whole academy musical. With many dancers, musicians
and actors filling our rehearsal spaces each night, we expect
our performance of the West End hit ‘
Back To The 80s’ to be of the highest quality. Set in a 1980’s
American High School we see our characters play out their
final year, and to a backdrop of many of the iconic hit songs of
that period, we witness love blossoming and hearts breaking.
I am sure that anyone who attends one of the three public
evening performances, or comes along to our primary school
matinee show, will leave with a smile on their face and a cheesy song floating around
in their heads.
Performance details: Wednesday 14 December/ Thursday 15 December/ Friday 16
December 7.00pm-8.45pm
Ticket prices:
£3 children / Concession, £4 Adults - Tickets go on sale the week beginning 21
November 2016
Street Dance
Over the recent weeks we have had a professional street dancer running some
wonderfully vibrant after-school sessions on a Friday with our students. With a steady
growth in the numbers of pupils from all years attending, our dancer Taiwo is having
great fun teaching a variety of street dance styles. This extra curricular session is open
to all years and those interested in joining in should simply come along to the Dance
studio on a Friday evening after school.
Year 7 S.T.E.M at E-ON
A group of Year 7 students played a huge part in the
Creative Conductor session ran by an outside provider
on behalf of E.ON.
This exciting ‘maker-style’ workshop covers energy
conduction, circuits and the design process - with
a creative twist! Students used ‘Makey Makey’ (the
kit that “turns the world into a
controller”) to combine their
knowledge of energy concepts with
artistic and musical flair. Students
learn how fruit and veg can conduct
electricity and they put it to the test.
All students put their creativity to test
and designed fantastic solutions to
their individual briefs. Overall, it was
an amazing experience for Year 7 and
they really enjoyed it.
Warhammer Club
This half term has seen the launch of
the Warhammer Club at The Carlton
Academy, in which pupils can enjoy a
hobby which involves collecting highly
detailed miniatures, which are then
painted and used to play table top
strategy games. The club, which takes
place every Thursday after school (from
3.10-4.30), has grown from a handful of
enthusiastic and interested pupils, to
around twenty regular attenders.
The building and painting side develops precision, attention to detail, an
appreciation of colour theory, and most of all, patience. The games are
fantastic for building numeracy skills, finding information, analytical and
strategic thinking, and developing the imagination.
It is a great, creative hobby with many sides to it, in a very friendly and
encouraging environment, and is open to all pupils, with no commitment.
There is a national league, in which school teams compete against each
other to find out who the best sportsmen in the hobby are, which hopefully
we will be entering next year.
Mr Yeadon
House Achievement
The new school year began with appointing
students to each House Council. Roles include Tutor
Representatives, House Captain, Vice-Captain, Events
Co-ordinator, Sports Captain and a new role for this
year – Media Technician. The House Council have the
important job of listening to the student voice and
assisting the House Achievement Co-ordinators with
the smooth running of events. Thank you to all that
applied and congratulations to those appointed.
The first event of the year was the Year 7 Inter-House Quiz. This was a great team
building activity in which all students in Year 7 participated. There were several rounds
based on curriculum knowledge and popular culture. The winning team was from
Cavendish and the overall Inter-House winners were Hollinsclough. We will be running
a similar event for Year 8 in the New Year.
This year we are introducing Intra-House competitions. These events start within tutor
groups and then extend to House contests that develop into whole school competitions.
This allows every individual to participate and achieve House points. For the first time
this year we ran a Spelling Bee. All students were given a spelling test of ten words
and the student with the highest number of correct spelling went on to represent
their tutor group in the Intra-House Competition. The
winner from this round represented their House in
the Spelling Bee final in the theatre in front of a live
audience of staff and students. The Carlton Academy
Spelling Bee Champion is Lydia Proudlove from
Carnarvon. Congratulations Lydia!
To raise money for Children In Need this year, the
House councils were tasked with coming up with a
range of fundraising ideas. These consisted of; Bake Off,
Bake Sale, Sing-a-Long, Fancy Dress Competition and Non-Uniform Day. Thank you to
everyone for taking part and raising money for a brilliant cause. The Bake Off winner
was Jadzia Armstrong from Hollinsclough with a fantastic cookie monster cake. The
Fancy Dress Competition was won by Lewis Perry from Cavendish. The Sing-a-Long at
lunchtime was extremely popular with students!
We have a number of events planned for the weeks leading up to Christmas – dust off
your Christmas jumpers. A Christmas design competition will be launched in the next
couple of weeks. Students can check the House Achievement notice board for up and
coming competitions, photographs of events and the results so far.
In the Spring Term, the House Council will be assisting with the running of several
events. Battle of the Bands, World Book Day and It’s a Knockout are all to come; along
with the opportunity to participate in Inter House Sports Competitions.

Social Sciences
This half term has been a very busy one
for Social Science. Students have made
fantastic starts to their courses this year.
A key event for us was the Sixth Form
Open Evening where many of our current
Sixth Form students helped to promote
the Psychology, Sociology and Health and
Social Care courses that we offer at A
Level. Students handed out ‘brain canapes’,
talked to prospective students as well as
ran interactive sessions in Health and Social
Care. Students were able to experience what is would be like to be partially sighted by
trying on specific glasses and also how a stethoscope is used to measure heart rate and
check for abnormalities.
A Level Psychology students were also given the opportunity to attend a Psychology
and Science conference trip at the Nottingham Playhouse in November. This day focused
on the scientific nature of the subject and how Science is being used in this field to
determine and predict human behaviour. The day included sessions on Pseudoscience,
the Psychology of dance and magic and ended with a live hypnosis session run by
the famous Andrew Newton (the man who trained the well-known hypnotist, Paul
McKenna). Some of the pictures show Dr Peter Lovatt (also known as Dr Dance)
getting the whole audience involved in dancing and discussing the biological basis of
dancing behaviour and how our genes and evolutionary processes have influenced the
ways in which men and women dance. As well as this, students listened to talks about
Psychology and Pseudoscience and whether or not we should believe articles published
in the public domain!
Throughout September Year 7 got to
choose a book to keep from an amazing
selection provided by Book Trust. They
were all extremely enthusiastic and once
they had chosen their books they couldn’t
wait for them to be delivered. The most
popular choice was 13 Hours by Narinder
Year 11 Revision
We want you to take a break and a lovely time over the Christmas break but sorry to
say this (you’re probably not going to like it) this needs to be the one Christmas when
you don’t treat the whole break as a holiday. Your summer exams seem a long time
away- they aren’t. When you get back to school in January you will only have 16 weeks,
that’s just 77 school days before your first written GCSE exams! Trust me, that time will
fly so it is really important that you start your revision early and start it properly. Below
you will find some tips to get you off to a flying start and build towards a successful
summer!
Make sure your revision has TARGETS:
Timetable: make a revision timetable. Plan your revision time. Allow more time for
subjects with more to revise. Schedule in breaks and plan some time off!
Active: revision needs to be active. Don’t just read your revision guide or notes. You
need to be doing something active like make summaries, flash cards or mind maps
Resources: take revision resources home with you. There are copies of resources in the
open area- take what you need
Guidance: get guidance from your teachers before the holiday. Ask your teachers which
topics pupils usually find difficult and that are common on exams.
Experiment: with different revision techniques. Now is the time to find out which work
best for you.
Topics: divide subjects up in to topics. For example, rather than revising Science, which
is a big subject, need to revise a specific topic eg. photosynthesis
Social: networking and games; give your phone to someone to look after whilst you
revise. Save social networking and games for your breaks and time off.
Below are some different revision techniques that you might want to try.
1.Making flash cards; with facts on or questions on one side and answers on the other
so that friends and family can test you.
2.Red pen, black pen; look at the information and set a time limit to remember as much
as you can. Then write down everything you can remember in black pen. Add what
you couldn’t remember in red. Target only these areas when memorising for a second
time- write up the information.
3.Organise your notes; try organising the information you are revising in different ways
such as the A5 revision card or fishbone diagram from the open area.
4.Try the Roman Rooms method for memorising facts; Search ‘Andi bell explains the
link method memory technique’ in youtube and watch the first video for how to do this.
5.Use mnemonics (words or sentences) to help you to remember facts, sequences and
keywords eg. ‘Richard of York gave battle in vain’ for the colours of the rainbow or ‘1
collar, 2 sleeves’ to remember that there is 1 c and 2s’ in necessary.
Achievement Rewards
As you are aware, we have a rewards system based on Achievement Points at The
Carlton Academy. These are awarded for students who demonstrate any of the ’Carlton
Learner’ characteristics in any of their work. At the end of each month, the top 20
students are invited to a celebration event with Mr Pierpoint. The following students
have been invited this term, congratulations to them all. The names of all students
below will go into a prize draw for the end of term star prizes.
I would like to introduce myself as the new Attendance Officer at The Carlton Academy.
If you have any queries regarding attendance/absences, I can be contacted on 0115
9550010 extension 334. From January 2017 to May 2017, we will be running a new
‘Attendance Lottery’ competition. Each week, every student achieving 100% attendance
with no lateness will receive one entry into the draw. Each fortnight, two names per
House will be drawn to receive a £5 voucher. Also, at the end of May, the 50 students
achieving the most ticket entries will qualify for a free school trip. Good luck everyone!
Hollinsclough House Autumn review
Hollinsclough students have made an absolutely fantastic
start to the year since September. From day one, many of
our older students were great role models and guides for
the new intake of nervous year 7’s. They made them feel
welcome and helped them settle in. This is so important in
a growing school and a credit to the academy. Year 7 have
been really amazing this year and I applaud them for their
transition into secondary school.
We have already completed many important aspects
of school life. ECO day was a great success for all year
groups, Inter-House competitions have already shown
Hollinsclough to be strong contenders with some great
achievements so early in the academic year and really well deserved results. The Cup
could be ours for the taking. I know that Hollinsclough students will continue to rise
to the challenges ahead.
I am really thrilled with the commitment that our students have made in getting involved
in the wider participation in school life through the House Committee. Ben Vernon is
now in his second year as Hollinsclough Captain and is doing a remarkable job as
ever. What a superb role model he is and I know that next year there will be others
lower down the school who will want to follow in his footsteps. Konrad Tokarski has
taken over the important role of Vice-Captain and has already excelled in this post. The
House Committee continue to work behind the scenes and this year comprise the
following dedicated students: Ella Hendry, Ellie Smith, Chloe Dale, Mason Ellis, Gideon
Tarry, Joshua Duwel, Emelia Harris, and Hakeem Ali.
Pledge has been successfully implemented this year and already our students are
showing that they can and have achieved many Pledge requirements. This is such an
important element and will help drive their own aspirations even higher and will
also showcase their many skills in and out of school through their involvement in
wider community participation. I look forward to signing these off later in the year.
A big thank-you to our excellent Tutor Team who have worked hard with students to
generate enthusiasm and the relevance it has for them. It is lovely to hear not only how
hard Hollinsclough students are working and the super progress they are making but
also what our students are doing out of school for themselves and others. Striving for
those extra goals will really push them forward in their skillset. I know that many more
will volunteer for future evenings and activities. It is very rewarding for them to be
involved in leading and supporting the many events that take place and will give them
confidence and an amazing sense of pride. Those that have already made contributions
we have received many messages about how well they conducted themselves.
Our student ambassadors this year have also contributed to the smooth running of the
very busy daily life and their engagement with the role has been magnificent. Well done
to all of you who have undertaken this so far this year.
Well done to the 2015-16 Year 11 cohort. They celebrated amazing results that were
thoroughly deserved in a record examination results year for The Carlton Academy. We
are delighted that so many Hollinsclough students excelled and are immensely proud of
the hard work that enabled them to achieve these. Many have been able to remain with
us in the Sixth Form or got into Colleges due to their well-earned results.
Well done to the following students in Year 11 who have achieved average effort scores
of 1 to 1.5: Jessica Bakewell, Hollie Birch, Lucy Bradbury, Emily Cotterill, Kasey Marriott,
Leo Dunbar-Measures, Tyessha O’Keefe, Ellie-Mae Shipley, Konrad Tokarski, Ben Vernon,
Alice Weston.
The Top 20 Students based on Achievement points to date for Hollinsclough are: Amy
Vernon, Madison Keetch, Amy Zacharia, Dane Duke, Freya McDonald, Joshua April, Erin
Ayres, Evie Mulligan, Ellie Sharpe, Jay Duber, Ellie Smith, Keillan Hudson-Croxall, Hannah
Marriott, Harry Freeman, Harrison Ellis, Leila Feenan-Whiteman, Jack Symington, Ryan
McVeagh, Harrison Coleman-Smith, Talia Ali
Have a fantastic Christmas and New Year from the Hollinsclough Team.
N Hodgkinson
Hi, I’m Ben Vernon, House Captain of Hollinsclough and Year 11 student at The Carlton
Academy. As a new year at the academy commenced, it has been nice to see all the new
Year 7 students settling in well to secondary school life. So far this year, we already have
had a day in fancy dress to raise money for Children in Need. I’m pleased to say that this
was a great success and a lot of money was generously raised. I’m sure that the year will
see several more exciting events take place and I look forward to my final year at The
Carlton Academy.
Carnarvon House Autumn Review
It has been a great start for our Carnarvon students! Year
sevens have had an amazing start getting involved in house
life and contributing to house events. It isn’t hard to see the
motivation they get from an amazing set of GCSE and A level
results this summer with our students being able to make
fantastic choices post 16 and post 18. With the introduction
of our Carlton Pledges, students are making a great effort
to find ways to contribute to school life and I look forward
to seeing some of our students in the Christmas drama and
dance performances. Our Gedling Youth Councillor, Megan
Page led a whole school assembly on anti-bullying along with
our Head Boy Earl Bernard and Head Girl Leila Hamdache. This has really inspired other
students across the school and I look forward to running some more assemblies and events
with our talented students. A huge well done to these students who are top twenty in
Carnarvon in gaining achievement points: Matthew Howis, Owen Birch, Joey Willott, Bryn
Burrows, Thomas Gregson, James Holder, Tia Smith, Kasey Bird, Ellie-May Swaby, Reegan
Williams, Freddy Wrightson, Isaac Leonardi, Justice Lee, Chloe Stubbs, Chanel Horsley,
Kaitlin Lamb, Callum Baker, Thomas Smith, Morgan Hempsell and Katie Bramer!
We have a wonderful team on the House Council this year who are already in full swing, helping
out with assemblies and representing the views of their tutor groups. They are:
A special mention also goes out to these students who attendance at school this year has been
truly outstanding, there are loads of students who have been here every single day and the
difference it makes to your achievement is massive so well done to you all. We have an amazing
team of tutors in Carnarvon who support and encourage our students on a daily basis so I’m
sure our students will join Mr Cook, Miss Messent and I in thanking you all for the great job you
do, day in day out.
Final word from Ellie, our House Captain
As House Captain of Carnarvon my key aims are to get younger students and year 11s to
interact more by supporting students as they transition to secondary school and supporting all
students with their work. This is so important as it makes them feel more comfortable here and
makes the atmosphere more friendly around school. I am committed to Carnarvon House and
have done lots of inter-house because I want to support my House to win the Carlton Cup!
Doing this makes us feel proud of our House and getting more people involved will help us
improve together. I am really looking forward to improving my leadership and organisation skills
by helping organise events for Carnarvon, being a good role model and representing Carnarvon
at our achievement events with our parents.
Grove House Autumn Review
The start of the new school year for Grove has been a busy one.
The introduction of the new pledge system has been welcomed
with enthusiasm and already, a large number of students have
fulfilled a number of pledges and are well on their way to having
more completed before Christmas.
With the help and guidance of the older students, the new Year
7’s have settled in quickly and are demonstrating positive attitudes
towards their learning and towards Grove House life.
A combination of achievement points, good behaviour and high
levels of participation in Grove House events will keep us on track
to retain The Carlton Cup at the end of the year – let’s keep up
the good start, Grove!
We have a great team on the House Council this year who are supporting and representing
their tutor groups. They are:
House Captain GRG Donnie Beswick
Vice-Captain GRA Stella Moth
Sports Captain GRG Mai-Li Tollerson
A big well done to students whose attendance at school this year has been truly
Another huge well done to these students who are top twenty in Grove in gaining
Swierczynska, Sophie Hardy, Karis Melia, Pearce Smith, Jack Dalton!
Final word from Donnie, our House Captain
I feel my role of House Captain of Grove is to improve Student’s School experience
with encouraging them to voice their opinion with subjects they are passionate about,
and promoting school events such as the Quiz and Inter-House events. By doing this,
they can interact with other students who share the same interests and hobbies and
this allows the students to bond with different age groups, who they wouldn’t normally
tend to socialise with. Being the Grove’s House Captain, I will support my students
especially younger years to allow them to feel welcomed and supported. I will do this
during tutor by getting all years to together to interact to form positive relationship
together by doing discussions, challenges and activities.
I feel proud to represent the Grove House, I feel excited to have this opportunity to
make a change in the school and bringing peers together in order to improve our school
committee. I am looking forward to taking this opportunity to be a role model to other
students, to encourage them to take other roles in Grove’s committee when they are
offered the chance, because I believe it allows students to gain more confidence and
proud to be an active member of the House, if they do not represent the school in
another way.
Pledge to Succeed
This first term has been action packed. We saw the launch of the new Pledge system and
students are well underway with their Pledges having many signed off in their passports
already. Many students have attended, participated or supported in one or more of
the lunchtime/after school clubs achieving their Sport,
Fundraising or Performing Arts targets. In addition to
these scheduled clubs, students may have been involved
in some of the seasonal activities that have taken place
so far ranging from the Halloween Writing Competition
to the Children in Need Fancy Dress Competition. Plans
are already in place to get students further engaged
at The Carlton Academy in the New
Year and I look forward to sharing the
successes of the students with you as we
move forward.
Cavendish House Autumn Review
It has been an exciting term for Cavendish House, with a new
Head of House and new tutors getting to know our fantastic
young people and welcoming in our new intake. Our Year 7
students have been busy settling into life at Secondary school
whilst the older members of the House have been preparing
themselves for the challenges and opportunities which Year
11 brings. Our Year 8 student ambassadors have been a
credit to us all, going about their tasks with efficiency and
excellent manners wherever their jobs take them throughout
the school.Cavendish students have begun to make progress
in our new pledge programme which celebrates their achievements and gives them
opportunities to develop their confidence and learn new skills.
All students in Cavendish House have given their best in lessons but special mention
must be made to the twenty students who have achieved the highest points in the
house: Kajol Chahal (Highest number of achievement points in the whole school!),
Along with our House Captain Jed Brandreth and Vice Captain Cerys Rouse, they
will be working with our House Achievement Co-ordinator Miss Slack to give our
students the very best opportunities and experiences possible. As a House we have
already made great progress towards the House Cup, participating in competitions and
Inter-House events, and students are beginning to earn more achievement points for
their work both in and out of lessons. The success we have enjoyed relies on everyone
working together to succeed, and so I would like to thank all of our Tutors for the work
they have done with their forms.
I would also like to thank Cavendish students and their parents for contributing to our
achievements and making me feel part of our amazing community. Merry Christmas to
all, and I look forward to working with you all in what I am sure will be a great New Year.
Annual School Review
In November we carried out our annual school review, where we have a good look at
lessons and also spend some time listening to the views of our students. I am pleased
to report that the students were very complimentary about their experiences at The
Carlton Academy and, in particular, commented on how much they appreciated the
quality of feedback given to them by their teachers which they feel really does help
them to improve their work. They said their teachers were friendly and helpful, but
also pushed them to achieve their best, and gave them individual support beyond the
Academy day. Students were keen to share their work with staff who were visiting
lessons, and exhibited great pride in their achievements in school. Students were very
clear about what their targets were and what they needed to do to improve them.
Finally – and interestingly! - while some students said they had too much homework,
a lot of students felt they were given a good amount and felt it helped them to learn
more. We could not be more pleased with what we saw during the review period and
it has given us some ideas on how to make things even better moving forward.
Site Updates
Our refurbished Dining Room is one year old, what joy it has been to have a space for
dining that reflects the ethos of positivity in the school. Autumn Term has been busy with
occasionally long queues but everyone seems to be getting just what they want and still
having time to relax and take part in the great lunchtime activities available. Plans are
now afoot to address another area of the school that could do with a bit of a refresh,
namely PE changing. The approximately 10 year old sectional building that were erected to
satisfy a need at that time are coming tio the end of their life. We have engaged a firm of
architects and project managers to look at some options. We now have some outline plans
to renovate the beautiful 70 year old music block at the back of the school to create PE
changing facilities including much requested showers whilst at the same time developing a
music teaching space that reflects the high standard of music teaching and performance in
the school. Watch this space, there is still a way to go to assemble the capital to pull this
off, but everyone can be assured that this is right at the top of our priorities.
We are lucky to have a joint use agreement with Gedling Borough Council that gives us
access to some great spaces during the day, namely the Forum Sports Hall and swimming
pool. As part of this agreement we also share the All Weather Pitch over the road at
Huckerby’s Field. Unfortunately as with the changing facilities, this huge All Weather Pitch
has reached the end of its life. Timing, however is good, as Gedling residents you may
be aware that the Borough Council have been consulting on a Playing Field Strategy for
the Borough. This report identifies the need for new All Weather Pitches in the Carlton/
Gedling area. We believe given the continued importance of and investment in Carlton
Forum Leisure Centre that by assembling a strong partnership of local stakeholders,
within a year to 18 months we could be benefiting from an all-weather multi sports play
area that any community in the country would be proud of. So lots going on around the
school with plans in place to ensure that the facilities at The Carlton Academy continue to
reflect the high quality of teaching and learning at this school.
Mr Lovett
We are sure that you will agree that our main schoolwear supplier, Just Schoolwear based
in Arnold has provided excellent service over the past few years, we do, however, recognise
that having just one supplier can be restrictive for parents and we have therefore sourced
a second local schoolwear supplier. Schoolwear Solutions based at 806 Woodborough
Road, Nottingham NG3 5QJ are now stocking Girls and Boys Blazers, Girls Skirts and
Girls and Boys Trousers. As yet they are not an approved supplier of school sweaters or
PE kit but this will be kept under review and may change for the 2017 – 18 Academic Year.
Just Schoolwear remain the main supplier to the Carlton Academy and the Redhill
Academy Trust, but we hope that you will welcome the addition of a second supportive
school uniform supplier to the list.
Year 7 Transition
This year saw the completion of our
very first Transition Event, which involved
all pupils from Year 7 participating in
singing as part of a choir, and performing
short performances related to WW1.
It has given us the opportunity to really
celebrate some early accomplishments
from our newest students as well as
giving pupils a chance to feel involved in
The Carlton Academy experience before
starting in September. Prior to our Year
7’s joining us in September, students took
part in a ‘Launch Day’ which involved
WW1 themed lesson from the English and
Design Technology Departments. These
lessons were incredibly well received
and pupils enjoyed the opportunity to be
taught, for some, for the first time at The
Carlton Academy.
A practical lesson in Design Technology allowed pupils to create their very own poppies
by bending Acrylic and using heated glue guns to hold them all in place. Whilst in English
pupils analysed a poem to try and understand how some people may have felt at the time
about Britain’s involvement in the war. A challenging skill but one that was embraced by all.
Well Done and thank you to both departments in their support to an excellent start to
the transition from Primary to Secondary School for our current Year 7s.
The lessons didn’t stop there. We were lucky enough to deploy our Music teacher Mrs
Moroziuk into all of our feeder Primary Schools to begin the practice for the song that
would eventually be performed at the Transition Event. This helped the pupils to perform
so impressively at the Transition Event and seeing so many Year 7’s involved in one
performance was truly special.
The Transition Event also gave parents an opportunity to see some pieces of work and
to observe the fantastic progress that children are making at an incredibly early point in
their time at The Carlton Academy. Our Year 7s have truly made an impact very early on
and have successfully made the transition from Primary to Secondary School effortlessly.
Well done Year 7 and thank you for all the hard work the staff at The Carlton Academy
have put in to make this as seamless as possible.
