Schengen Area – The Schengen area covers 26 EU states and the member states of<br />

EFTA (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenste<strong>in</strong>) where passport and border<br />

control has been abolished for travel between participat<strong>in</strong>g states. The Schengen states<br />

operate a strengthened external border. The UK and Republic of Ireland have opted<br />

out of Schengen, and <strong>in</strong> response to recent terror attacks and the migration crisis some<br />

Schengen states have re-<strong>in</strong>troduced temporary border controls.<br />

Common Travel Area – The Common Travel Area ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s an open border for travel<br />

between Ireland, the UK, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. People cross<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternal<br />

borders with<strong>in</strong> the CTA are subject to no or m<strong>in</strong>imal border checks and require m<strong>in</strong>imal<br />

identity documents to travel. In order to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> the CTA there is significant cooperation<br />

between UK and Irish border officials.<br />

EU Acquis – The EU Acquis Communautaire, often shortened to the EU Acquis, is the<br />

legislation, acts and court decisions which <strong>in</strong> sum form the body of <strong>Europe</strong>an Union law.<br />

Rules of Orig<strong>in</strong> – Rules of orig<strong>in</strong> are used to determ<strong>in</strong>e the country or orig<strong>in</strong> of a<br />

product for purposes of <strong>in</strong>ternational trade. Countries may not apply the same trade<br />

policy measures towards all other countries <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational trade of goods, with the<br />

consequence that there must be various legal or adm<strong>in</strong>istrative requirements to be<br />

fulfilled for implement<strong>in</strong>g the different trade policy measures accord<strong>in</strong>g to the different<br />

orig<strong>in</strong> of goods. This may be for example different levy<strong>in</strong>g of import duties, allocat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

quotas, impos<strong>in</strong>g anti-dump<strong>in</strong>g duties or apply<strong>in</strong>g safeguard measures.
