About Trey Whitfield
Trey Whitfield was born and raised in Brooklyn,
New York. He was a recipient of a full scholarship to
Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire
in 1986. At Brewster he was very active in the theatre and
was a member of the baseball and basketball teams. In his
junior year at Brewster, Trey led his basketball team to the
New England State Championship.
Trey was a 6’8” 240 pound power forward and was rated
one of the top players in the country. He was highly
recruited by schools such as Pepperdine, Boston College,
University of Massachusetts, University of Richmond
and Purdue. He finally chose the University of Richmond
because of its strong academic philosophy, solid coaching
and the encouragement of one of its distinguished alumni,
Johnny Newman.
Trey spent many hours giving back to his community. He
always considered himself fortunate so he encouraged
youngsters to take advantage of any opportunity to
further their education. He worked in summer camps
counseling young boys and girls. He also played in Summer Leagues in the New York area and
participated in the Metro Basketball Camp in Pennsylvania each summer.
A boating accident, just a few days prior to graduation, took his young life. However, family,
hundreds of dear friends, fans and classmates still embrace him in memory because of his total
commitment to scholarship, friendship and competition.
Many of Trey’s colleagues continue their quest for higher education as a salute to him. Trey
touched many lives in his short 18 years and he still lives in the hearts of the many adults and
youngsters who knew and loved him.
In his memory, the Trey Whitfield Foundation will pursue his dream that everyone regardless
of ethnic background gets a fair chance at being educated. That every child will have a helping
hand and every youngster will get support from someone who cares.
Trey, your dream continues...
in the community. She applies the same strategy of working hard to
Charnette Chambers
Bloomfield, NJ
C
harnette Chambers, a 22 year old, is from Jersey City. She is the
seventh of eight children. She grew up in the Charter School
system in Jersey City. Charnette had a challenging childhood within
the foster care system and a mother addicted to drugs and a father
not around. Although the odds were against her, she never gave up
on her education. She was the first out of her eight siblings to receive
a college degree. She graduated from Hudson County Community
College in May of 2013 with an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood
Education. In the fall, she will attend College Of Saint Elizabeth in
Morristown, NJ. She plans to earn a B.A. in Early Childhood Education
Sophia Chan
New York, NY
Sophia Chan was born on March 8, 2000, in Beth Israel Hospital. Though she
lived in the suburbs of New Jersey her parents sent her to Transfiguration
Elementary School in New York City. She gave her first public performance
when she was 4, where she narrated a story in front of a large audience.
From then on, she developed a love for performing and public speaking.
During her years at Transfiguration, she joined the school choir, newspaper
committee, and participated in the school’s talent shows. In the fourth
grade, Sophia was inspired to develop her skills in writing. She believes that
through writing, she can express feelings and create unthinkable, limitless
imaginations. In sixth grade, she entered the school speech bee and wrote
a speech on the Covenant House volunteer organization. While she did not
win, she tried harder at the following year’s speech bee and won third place.
She would like to attend a Catholic high school with small classes and a
similar environment like Transfiguration. Her school became a second home
and it is a community she looks forward to being a part of everyday.
Jade Coachman
New York, NY
Jade Coachman was born on March 16th, 1995 in Harlem, New
York. At the age of five, Jade found her true love “basketball.” She
was one of the first African American girls to become a Girl Scout in
her neighborhood. She received her first badge volunteering at home.
After 9/11, her family moved back to New York, where she switched
schools to challenge her thinking. At The Talented and Gifted School
for Young Scholars, she was a part of numerous clubs, but the debate
team left the most impact upon her. She led her team with the highest
scores and won the first girls’ championship for the school. Her
experience on the debate team shaped her into wanting to become an
attorney. A recent graduate of Frederick Douglass Academy, Jade looks
Jay Ribakove
Roslyn, NY
When Jay Ribakove was young, he was told, “No matter how smart,
big or strong you are, there can always be someone smarter, bigger
or stronger, but you never have to let anyone work harder than you.” He
took that to heart, and he’s always tried to work diligently and prove his
worth. This past semester, Jay studied overseas at the Danish lnstitute for
Study Abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. Although he was busy with his
studies in another country, he still looked to the future. After scanning
the Northwestern University alumni database, he contacted graduates
who could provide advice, or help with a future job. As a result of his
networking, he secured an internship with Davis Capital, a boutique
investment bank with offices in New York, Chicago and London.
Nevertheless, his thoughts on hard work have evolved. While he has
the same work ethic, he looks forward to being a part of a group and
working together toward success.
Sara Ribakove
Roslyn, NY
Sara Ribakove, despite being only 20 years old, has already begun to
reflect on her life. As she furthers her education, she is grateful to have
been fortunate enough to receive a quality education. The realization that
her education has been a privilege, not a right, struck a chord with Sara.
It has inspired her to study the education gap and the unequal access to
education and resources in America. As a Health, Behavior and Society
major at the University of Rochester, she studies health and the impact
of education on health. Her most recent Independent Study combined
research with an internship at Rochester General Hospital. Rochester
General Hospital supports the Youth Apprenticeship Program, a schoolto-work
program for high school juniors and seniors in the Rochester
City School District. The majority of these students come from lowincome,
minority families, yet they are motivated and intelligent. They
have challenged Sara to think outside the box to help them achieve their
goals, and, thus, achieve her own goals.
Jim Burt
Jim Burt is a former American football player
who played for the New York Giants and
San Francisco 49ers in the National Football
League (NFL). Burt played nose tackle for the
Giants team that won Super Bowl XXI and
the 49ers team that won Super Bowl XXIV.
Burt attended the University of Miami,
where he started on the football field for
the Hurricanes and was inducted into the
University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame.
Burt joined the Giants as an undrafted free
agent in 1981. He made the Pro Bowl in 1986
and finished his career with 20 quarterback
sacks. Burt was respected throughout the
league for his toughness and determination,
which resulted in him going from being an
undrafted rookie free agent to a Pro Bowler.
He is also known for knocking out 49ers
quarterback Joe Montana on a pass in the
1986 Divisional Playoff game. Montana’s pass
was picked off and returned for a touchdown
by Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor. The
Giants won, 49-3, on their way to winning
Super Bowl XXI.
Although many people often credit
Harry Carson and Lawrence Taylor with
inventing the “Gatorade Shower” on coaches
following wins, Burt actually created it in
1985. As Carson stated in his 1987 book
Point of Attack: The Defense Strikes Back
head coach Bill Parcells was especially hard
on Burt in practice. Parcells often made Burt
raise a 50 lb. dumbbell repeatedly off the
ground in practice to simulate raising his arm
powerfully out of his stance at the snap of the
ball. Burt exacted revenge on Parcells after a
win in 1985 by dousing him with a cooler of
Gatorade. This has since become a tradition
in football analogous to the champagne
showers teams make in their locker rooms
after winning a championship.
Burt battled back problems with the New
York Giants which ultimately caused Parcells
to announce his retirement in 1988. Burt,
however, was not ready to retire and instead
joined the San Francisco 49ers for the 1989
season. He won his second Super Bowl with
the team when they defeated the Denver
Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV.
During the 2006 season, Burt traveled to
Dallas to give moral support to his former
tormentor, Parcells, who was then head coach
of the Dallas Cowboys. He also delivered a
pre-game speech and stood on the sidelines
exulting Dallas’ defensive players.
Dr. Michael Cooper
Dr. Michael Cooper is the 11th Head of School
of Brewster Academy, a 9-PG boarding/
day school in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. He
has been the Head for 10 years, and served
Clarkson University for almost 20 years as Vice
President for Institutional Advancement and
Vice President for Student Affairs prior to his
arrival at Brewster. Before Clarkson, Dr. Cooper
was on the administrative staff and served in a
variety of capacities at the State University of
New York – Canton.
Brewster Academy’s relationship with the
Trey Whitfield School is a special one, created
from a bond forged through the crucible of one
of life’s most difficult challenges, the tragic death
of a young person. Each year the two schools
celebrate Trey’s life, affirming the fortitude
of the human spirit to endure, showing how
fulfillment and meaning in life can be achieved
no matter what life throws at us.
Despite a distinguished career in education,
it was one of Dr. Cooper’s earliest jobs, running
a paper route, that taught him some of his most
valuable life lessons —“Show respect and be
courteous to people — you never know who
might someday be a customer or a friend, and
showing respect leaves an indelible mark; be
conscientious in fulfilling your responsibilities
— people appreciate it when you work hard
and finish what you start; and always remember
where you came from — success only matters
if you are able to appreciate and understand
how you got to be where you are and who it
was along the way that helped you get there.”
These lessons have served him well throughout
his career and help underscore his continued
passion for learning and why he believes it is so
important to be a life-long student…as there is
always something new to learn and explore.
Michael, a career educator, received a
Fulbright Award in 1993 to study the higher
education system in Germany and more
recently was the recipient of a fellowship for
Heads of Schools at the Klingenstein Center at
Teachers College Columbia University in 2012.
He serves on a number of nonprofit boards
including the Association of Independent
Schools of New England, the Wright Museum,
the Wolfeboro Area Children’s Center, and the
Wolfeboro Chamber of Commerce.
He was born and raised in Albany, NY, holds a
Ph.D. in child and family studies from Syracuse
University, a masters degree in counseling from
St. Lawrence University, and bachelor of arts in
psychology from the State University of New
York at Albany. He and his wife Andrea will be
married for 40 years in August. The father of
two grown children (Adam & Allie, daughterin-law
Patricia), he enjoys fishing and golf,
spending time with family, especially his two
grandsons Crosby and Timothy, and working
Ray Negron
Ray Negron is a sport’s executive with over
thirty years experience in baseball who has
influenced three generations of baseball players.
His first job came from a chance encounter with
George Steinbrenner as a youth. Ray was caught
by Steinbrenner scrawling a Yankee logo on a
Yankee Stadium wall and instead of punishing
the erstwhile graffiti artist, Steinbrenner hired
him as the Yankee bat boy and propelled him
into a “dream job”; sharing the dugout with the
“Bronx Zoo Yankees” of the Seventies. Despite
his young age, Ray was a positive influence in
the fiery clubhouse that included manager Billy
Martin, superstar Reggie Jackson, the legendary
Thurman Munson, and more.
A standout shortstop in Springfield Gardens
High School, Ray was a second round draft pick
for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1975.
Ray worked with the Cleveland Indians and
the Texas Rangers as a team counselor, working
behind the scenes to help players handle any
off-field challenges before they escalated into
insurmountable problems.
Ray currently works with the New York
Yankees and once was a personal consultant
to George Steinbrenner. In addition, he is also
Director of Community Relations for Spalding,
Trey Whitfield Foundation, Inc. 25
America’s oldest baseball company, where he
has been instrumental in supporting baseball in
underprivileged areas with equipment donations
and volunteer efforts from some of baseball’s
biggest stars.
An avid writer with a love of children, Ray
has written and published three children’s
books. Ray’s first book, The Boy of Steel, was #2
on the NY Times Bestseller List and is currently
on display at the National Baseball Hall of
Fame in Cooperstown, NY. The Boy of Steel was
instrumental in helping numerous charities,
little leagues and the Boys & Girls Club to raise
funds for their programs. The proceeds from the
book were distributed through the NY Yankees
Foundation for cancer research and education.
Ray’s second book, The Greatest Story Never
Told: The Babe and Jackie has helped juvenile
diabetes and the Dewayne Murcer Foundation
for cancer research and education.
Ray’s third and latest children’s book entitled
One Last Time: Goodbye to Yankee Stadium was
released by HarperCollins Publishers on March
17, 2009. The foreword was written by Reggie
Jackson and the book is a beautiful tribute to
George Steinbrenner and the New York Yankees.
A portion of the proceeds were used to help
the Boys and Girls Clubs, the DeWayne Murcer
Foundation for cancer research and to charities
to help the homeless. One Last Time has already
reached # 1 on Amazon’s Best Seller List.
Ray has received numerous Humanitarian
of Commerce and the National Conference
of Puerto Rican Women. Ray has also been
recognized for his work in the community by
many organizations including Promesa and the
in the Northeast. At twenty he had a near death
experience in a horrific car accident. During
recuperation, with a new focus on life, he became
interested in acting - eventually found himself
studying with Meisner disciple Kathryn Gately
in NYC. Later he had the great privilege of
studying and working with Broadway director
and The Actors Studio founder Bobby Lewis.
For awhile, Ciarán focused solely on acting and
set singing aside completely.
After an introduction to The Irish Repertory
Theatre in NYC Ciarán met legendary
Broadway director Harold Prince during The
Rep’s production of Hal’s award winning play
“Grandchild of Kings.” Hal was a mentor to
Ciarán, guiding him to voice teachers - the
goal was Broadway. Six months after meeting
Hal, Ciarán made his Broadway debut in
“Les Miserables” (Babet, Marius), and shortly
thereafter Prince cast Ciarán as Raoul in “The
Phantom of the Opera.” After a year of playing
Raoul on Broadway, Ciarán then starred in the
coveted role of The Phantom.
Other NY stage performances include
numerous appearances with The Irish
Repertory Theatre Company; Shaughnessy
in “The Hostage”, Ciarán in “The Irish…and
how they got that way…” by Frank McCourt,
Sir Dinadan in “Camelot” (with Jeremy Irons),
and Woody in “Finian’s Rainbow.” Television
appearances include Law and Order, One Life
To Live, Another World, Late Night with David
Letterman, and numerous appearances on
PBS Stations nationally. He also has produced
successful productions and performed as a solo
artist at well known venues here and abroad.
As a voice healer Ciarán taught with his
friend, world renowned spiritual medium
James Van Praagh at the Omega Institute for
Holistic Studies. In his new program “Awaken”
Ciarán uses the power of music, meditation, and
his own life story to help transform the lives of
all who hear him, particularly abuse survivors
like himself. Ciarán is thrilled to be adding this
spiritual, healing genre to his repertoire and
feels privileged to use his talents to impact the
lives of others in a healing way.
Lenny Wilkens
”Show people how to succeed and they will push
their own expectations to new heights.”
- Lenny Wilkens
Lenny Wilkens, a native of Brooklyn, NY is
a basketball legend known throughout the
world. He enjoyed a 15-year playing career
in the NBA, playing for the St. Louis Hawks,
Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers
and the Portland Trail Blazers. He ranks
among the all-time leaders in assists (7,210),
free throws and games played (1,077 regular
season games and averaged 16.5 points), and
was named Most Valuable Player in the 1971
All-Star Game. He was named to the NBA All
Star Team nine times.
A Hall of Fame Player and Coach, Wilkens
currently ranks second in all-time wins as
an NBA Coach and first in all-time games
coached. Among his many accomplishments
over his career, Wilkens coached the Seattle
Supersonics to their only NBA title in 1979.
Wilkens was also the only NBA legend listed
among both the all-time top-50 NBA players
and the top-10 NBA Coaches during the
“NBA at 50” celebration.
As a Head Coach, Wilkens went on to lead five
different NBA teams to the playoffs. Utilizing
a team-oriented philosophy, Wilkens had
the unique talent of crafting championship
contending clubs out of competent but
unspectacular units. In 1994, he was named
the NBA Coach of the Year with the Atlanta
Hawks. Additionally, Wilkens made his
country proud as the Head Coach of USA
Basketball’s Gold Medal winning Dream
Team II at the 1996 Summer Olympics, as well
as playing a key role as an Assistant Coach on
the fabled 1992 Gold Medal winning Dream
Team 1.
Coach Wilkens also served as the President
of the NBA Coaches Association for a record
17 years. Under his leadership, the only
coaches union in professional sports
made great strides for all NBA Head and
Assistant Coaches.
He is the only person inducted to the
Basketball Hall of Fame on three separate
occasions as a player (1989), coach (1998), and
as a member of the 1992 Dream Team (2010).
Coach Wilkens has mentored coaches on a
global basis, including successful consulting
assignments for the South Korean National
Team in the 2010 Asian Games. He also coproduced
the popular Wilkens Basketball
Legacy Series -1- an instructional basketball
DVD focusing on skill development for
young players and coaches.
Beyond his many successes on the court,
Lenny has received Honorary Doctorate
degrees from Providence College, St. Francis
College, and Seattle University. He served
as vice chairman of the Seattle SuperSonics
ownership group in 2007.
With his commitment to community, Lenny
founded the Lenny Wilkens Foundation,
which supports children’s healthcare and
education.
The Trey Whitfield Foundation Honoree Timeline
The Early Years..... The Trey Whitfield Foundation’s inaugural awards banquet
on July 9, 1993, the ultimate goal was to support children and education.
Just as important is our goal to recognize and honor academic and adult
achievers. The objective is simple - demonstrate by example how anyone
can realize one’s dreams with hard work and dedication as exemplifed by
these Adult Honorees shown in this retrospective of our past 20 years. There
are many more Honorees that we cannot fit into these few pages and the
contributions of every Honoree to the greater good have been and continue
to be significant - helping us at the Foundation further galvanize our goals
year after year and to continue to explore new avenues and provide greater
outreach to the community.
You did it now and made it through the grueling days of
which there were many. You gained insight, and on your
way you put up a good fight. And now you’re done with one
chapter in your life but as you set out, your goal is now in
