Anwar Gladden
Anwar Gladden was born and raised in
Brooklyn, New York. From an early
age, his mom noticed his competitiveness
and love of sports and signed him up for
Little League Baseball. He played baseball
with the North Highway, the Bonnies and
other Youth Service Organizations.
He attended Midwood High School, where
he played both baseball and basketball. He
received a baseball scholarship to St. Francis
College.
After graduating from St. Francis College,
he became a Physical Education teacher in
Brownsville and started coaching the Tilden
High School baseball team. Although he
only played basketball for a short time in
high school, basketball was his true passion.
Shortly after leaving Tilden, he began
coaching the South Shore Girls Basketball
team. He now had his dream job. In 11
seasons, he has taken South Shore to the
City finals at Madison Square Garden three
times. His success at South Shore is reflected
in his being nominated New York City Girls
Basketball “Coach of the Year” in 2009 and
2011 and Brooklyn’s “Coach of the Year” for
both of those seasons.
His players have attended Division I
schools such as the University of Hawaii, St
Bonaventure and Virginia Commonwealth
University. Others have gone on to junior
colleges, Division II, and Division III colleges.
During the summer months, Anwar
volunteers with various girls basketball
summer leagues. Additionally, he routinely
takes his players and others to visit colleges.
Many of the girls he coached have gone
on to various colleges with full athletic
scholarships.
Anwar is married and the father of one
child.
