on her education. She was the first out of her eight siblings to receive
a college degree. She graduated from Hudson County Community
Sophia Chan
New York, NY
Sophia Chan was born on March 8, 2000, in Beth Israel Hospital. Though she
lived in the suburbs of New Jersey her parents sent her to Transfiguration
Elementary School in New York City. She gave her first public performance
when she was 4, where she narrated a story in front of a large audience.
From then on, she developed a love for performing and public speaking.
During her years at Transfiguration, she joined the school choir, newspaper
committee, and participated in the school’s talent shows. In the fourth
grade, Sophia was inspired to develop her skills in writing. She believes that
through writing, she can express feelings and create unthinkable, limitless
imaginations. In sixth grade, she entered the school speech bee and wrote
a speech on the Covenant House volunteer organization. While she did not
win, she tried harder at the following year’s speech bee and won third place.
She would like to attend a Catholic high school with small classes and a
similar environment like Transfiguration. Her school became a second home
and it is a community she looks forward to being a part of everyday.
Jade Coachman
New York, NY
Jade Coachman was born on March 16th, 1995 in Harlem, New
York. At the age of five, Jade found her true love “basketball.” She
continued to value the importance of academics and has been a true
student athlete. Her family briefly moved to Baltimore, where she
was one of the first African American girls to become a Girl Scout in
her neighborhood. She received her first badge volunteering at home.
After 9/11, her family moved back to New York, where she switched
schools to challenge her thinking. At The Talented and Gifted School
for Young Scholars, she was a part of numerous clubs, but the debate
team left the most impact upon her. She led her team with the highest
scores and won the first girls’ championship for the school. Her
experience on the debate team shaped her into wanting to become an
attorney. A recent graduate of Frederick Douglass Academy, Jade looks
forward to majoring in Political Science at Clark Atlanta University.
